  • I have witnessed this in Africa on a micro-level. I have seen land cleared for agriculture with an immediate drying up of once permanent streams, thus illuminating the only water sources for miles. I have witnessed the shortening of the raining season along with the extension and increased severity of the dry season in West Africa. I have seen the desert expand southward as the savanna turns into desert. The longer term consequences will affect us all globally.

  • My response after seeing this article is that I am concerned about the deforestation, because forests play an important role in supporting life on earth. Forests are a source of oxygen that we breathe to survive. There will be many problems that arise if we continue to use the existing forest without replanting it. These problems are like the glass effect that arises from human activities that produce CO2 gas. If deforestation continues, no one absorbs CO2 further, the effect of these greenhouse gases cancels global fires which have an impact on glaciers, drought, forests, causing habitat for these animals to become extinct and causing the ecosystem on earth to become unbalanced.

  • This article kinda toxic lol I’m a Forestry major and first thing we learn are the differences between controlled forests and “real” forests. The paper you use for your test or the Amazon boxes you receive by mail all come from these controlled forests, those are places you can cut down and manage regularly. These places exist so beautiful places like rainforests can stay untouched. We don’t go to Amazon rainforest and cut everything down, turn it into paper. I’m Brazilian and what’s destroying our rainforest is mostly cattle and fire (the CO2 problem). Soy is a problem too. The big forestry business are all certificated by FSC, which means you have to follow A BUNCH of rules not to destroy the environment.

  • From the economical point of view, how is a standing jungle a profit. Tree is just a commodity, right? People don’t pay for trees, and maybe, they should. Land development is not to let the trees grow.   • Let me break things to you all. Over 99% of all species that ever lived on Earth went extinct. The planet went throught temperatures way over anything climate change could ever cause, and way down what most animals and even plants could ever survive. The interest in stopping climate change, preventing current species from going extinct and stopping things like deforestation is selfish, and purely for our own benefit. Which is why we need to redouble efforts. Even if you think you don’t care about those, you tip the balance too much to the wrong side and the delicate ecossystem we depend on to live can come tumbling down just like it also happened for previous dominating species in past epochs.
