Recycling collection points for various materials, including glass, paper, plastic, and metal, do not allow sheet glass or plate glass to be placed in the glass recycling bin. This is because we are constantly asked to recycle all our waste glass. The main issue with glass greenhouses is that they take a million years to break down if sent to a landfill, while glass bottles and jars can be recycled within 30 days. Flat household glass cannot be recycled at the curb as it is treated with chemicals.
To dispose of flat glass, homeowners should consider donating or repurposing them to local charities or community groups. Glass windows and greenhouse glass can be recycled at household waste recycling centers, but glass windows and greenhouse glass need to go in the hardcore and must be sold to a scrap yard or private buyer. Some simple steps to dispose of glass include disposing of whole glass, recycling the glass, contacting your waste management company, and taking large pieces of broken glass to a local Community Recycling Centre.
In summary, recycling greenhouse glass is beneficial for the environment, as it takes a million years to break down compared to glass bottles and jars. To dispose of glass windows and greenhouse glass, homeowners should follow these steps: 1) Dispose of whole glass, 2) Recycle the glass, 3) Contact your waste management company, and 4) Take large pieces of broken glass to a local Community Recycling Centre. They offer a fully inclusive service to dismantle and remove glass throughout Surrey and South West London, offering transparent and competitive prices.

What are two types of glass that cannot be recycled?
Glass is the most commonly recycled type, but it cannot be processed if it is contaminated with food or dirt. Heat-resistant glass, ovenware, Pyrex, mirrors, and crystal are not recyclable. The company offers various waste collection, recycling, staff training, waste sorting services, medical waste management, hazardous waste management, asbestos disposal, food and organic waste, construction waste removal, and Covid-19 services.
They also provide on-site solutions for industries such as healthcare, hospitality, retail, manufacturing, petrochemicals, agri-business, domestic and residential, municipalities, mining, and materials recovery facilities. They also offer on-site waste management solutions for industries like materials recovery facilities, thermal treatment facilities, and hazardous waste landfill management.
Can I put broken glass in my recycling bin?
Broken glass should be placed in a paper bag or cardboard box, as it will cut through the paper. Glass bin collections depend on your location, so check your local council website for collection days. However, the sound of glass being recycled can cause noise complaints from residents, as waste management companies receive complaints from built-up areas. The safest way to dispose of broken glass is to place it inside a paper bag or cardboard box.
How to dispose of glass pieces?
Broken glass should be picked up using a brush, dustpan, tongs, or forceps and placed in a designated container for disposal. It should never be handled directly or placed in regular trash. The laboratory can choose an appropriate container for collection and disposal. Five Gallon Plastic Buckets are available for $4. 00 and should be labeled for collection of broken glassware. When full, secure the lid and attach a note requesting disposal by the custodian.
The bucket and broken glass are disposed as a unit. Glass Disposal Boxes are available from various vendors and come with a plastic liner for wet glassware disposal. However, these large floor standing boxes are often overfilled, heavy, and structurally unsound, making them less practical for some laboratories. The filled box must be transported to the dumpster for disposal by laboratory personnel.
Can I put glass in my garbage?
Flat glass, including mirrors, window glass, dinnerware, drinkware, and ceramics, is treated with chemicals and has a different melting point than glass containers. Therefore, it must be disposed of in regular garbage.
Is it okay to put glass in the bin?
It is inadvisable to dispose of light bulbs, drinking glasses, and Pyrex containers in green bins or bottle banks. If reuse is feasible, the items should be donated to a local charity shop. In the event that they are not suitable for reuse, they should be discarded in a black rubbish bin.
Can you put glass in the recycling bin?
The following items may be recycled: glass bottles, jars, plastic bottles, tubs, trays (excluding black plastic), tins, cans, and empty aerosol cans.
What can you do with glass waste?
Glass recycling is the process of reprocessing waste glass into usable products, such as bottles and jars. In the UK, glass manufacturers recycle almost 70% of all glass packaging, with the majority being glass bottle recycling. Glass is collected separately, stored in a state-of-the-art Materials Recycling Facility (MRF), and then bulked up and transported to a glass treatment plant. This cycle can be repeated without compromising quality.
How do I dispose of old greenhouse glass?
It is recommended that the glass be broken up safely, wrapped carefully, and disposed of in the residual waste bin provided by the local council.
How do I get rid of a large piece of glass?
Large glass items may be discarded in the regular waste stream, whereas smaller fragments of glass should be placed in a sealed bag for proper disposal. It is advisable to consult the guidelines provided by the waste management company or landfill in order to ascertain the availability of drop-off options. It should be noted that large glass pieces are not eligible for recycling. The Minneapolis South Transfer Station provides Minneapolis vouchers or non-resident fees for recycling.
Why is green glass not recyclable?
Glass products are typically clear, green, or amber, and are produced using different substances and minerals. Recycling these glass products requires maintaining the same colors to prevent contamination. Understanding which glass types can and cannot be recycled can help you determine which types can be recycled. Disposing of glass that cannot be recycled involves reusing it or disposing of it in a proper manner. Recycling helps conserve resources and reduces waste, while disposing of non-recyclable glass helps preserve the environment.
How long does greenhouse glass last?
Glass is the strongest greenhouse material, lasting over 50 years. Although it may be more expensive than polycarbonate, it offers more years of use and easy replacement of glass panes. Polycarbonate greenhouses are strong and resistant to cracking, but they can be difficult to clean due to scratching. Glass is also easy to replace, making it a more cost-effective option. Despite the advantages, it is important to consider the potential drawbacks and benefits of each greenhouse material before making a decision.
back in laos, during the secret war, our house was using corrugated tine for the roof… each time, rainwater would leak through. this practice, when you don’t have a lot of things to seal stuff with, my dad would use car gasoline and dipping styrofoam and use it as a putty-like glue to mend stuff with. this would seal holes and whatnot.
Now he’ll be able to glue that board to the wall to cover the holes he made for no reason. And he’s got fancy caulking gun/ tape measure art to decorate it. In fact, once he glues all the other tools he made onto boards, he’ll get a bunch of free Styrofoam when he orders new tools from Amazon to replace the ones he glued to the wall. Win/ win!
I really appreciate how the article goes through the principle of dunking styrofoam remnants in acetone. I really didn’t quite get the process the first time around, so the 8th and 9th time of doing the same Damn simple thing was immensely useful. To make sure I got the order right, I’m going to watch the article the entire day.
A little quick runthrough for those of you who don’t have time to watch this: 1. Make napalm, slowly 2. Glue a gnome to some cardboard. 3. Glue your tools to a plank using napalm. 4. Smash some drywall with a strange custom spinning trident. 5. Glue some screw cap to a screw, and put some sandpaper on it. 6. Use this to awkwardly sand an old hammer. 7. Sharpen a piece of pipe, and use it to drill holes in a belt. Aaaaand we’re done. Good work. Thumbs up.
Oh my God when he gave the thumbs up after he glued his perfectly good tools to that piece of wood, validating to all of us that “Yes, this was the plan from the start.” I knew I had struck internet gold. I haven’t laughed so hard in years. Whether this decision was intentional satire or simply intentional, well done sir.
Guess I should have read the comments first. I have spent the past 3 days trying to dissolve styrofoam in water and was wondering what I was doing wrong. I tried several types of styrofoam and adjusting the pressure applied during insertion. Finally, I came to the comments section to find the hidden secret and luckily I got my tape measure and caulk gun applied to a plank of wood. Not sure how I would have accomplished that without this very helpful article!
It has to be real acetone and the right kind of styrofoam. I rember melting Styrofoam with hairspray as a kid. My aunt had one of those Styrofoam wig heads, once she sprayed the wig with hairspray, some fell on the head and created little holes, that got the gears in my brain spinning. So when she wasn’t around i took the head and used hairspray to turn it into a pretty cool skull (melted the nose and eyes and lips), my aunt however was not amused when i showed her what i had done to the “wig head”.
I was doing the polystyrene dissolve thing on youtube, 20 yrs ago. It doesn’t work as a glue, but it makes a good ‘ art and craft clear ‘ when dissolved in automotive or general purpose thinners . It turns clear in the jar, and flows like a paint. When it dries, it’s rock hard and clear, like acrylic ( DVD CASES etc. are polystyrene in it’s unfoamed form). I took it off youtube, because the fumes were nasty !
This is highly flammable its basically NAPALM. And it burns FOREVER. If u use gasoline instead of acetone it disolves faster. Basically same thing. Both are flamable. Napalm can burn a hole through an engine block. It STICKS to things and keeps burning. Water doesnt put it out and the fire SPREADS. i step on it, its on ur shoes and goes up ur leg. Bad stuffs 🧐
I’m just a crafter but the title of this article caught my attention. What was the point of gluing those things to a board? If it was to show how strong the glue was then fair enough. But showing some practical ways that could help people would have been better. Also, to me it would be quicker, easier, less effort to just go out and buy the bit that makes a nice clean cut hole. (from Australia)
Who among us hasn’t desperately needed to glue your tools to the wall? I don’t know about you but id be lying if i said I also felt the urge to stretch the time needed to achieve completion at least 200 x. This is obviously about as good as a method as one could shoot for. Only way I see to improve is by crafting the tools to glue up before. If your really wild, build a dedicated tool gluing wall to make it the ultimate way to waste a week of your life. While making sure you’ll never have access to said tools again. Can’t wait for thr sequel.
Thx for the comments I fast forwarded this. Ok- am I understanding that acetone & styrofoam makes E-6000 glue? Acetone breaks down a multitude of fibers into a putty like substance, but I didn’t know it also made adhesive properties. Not the smartest idea gluing tools to a board, I hope that was just to show tensile strength. I liked the file hack, but why didn’t he use the glue that he made? Glue from a glue gun isn’t the strongest bond. He shined the hammer up nicely, although Navel Jelly would’ve bn faster. The belt holes- 2 days ago, I just had to drill holes thru thick material for a costume & couldn’t find my leather hole punch tool, so I used a self-drilling screw; it worked fine. I used a screwdriver after just to make the holes clean. So, I guess learning styrofoam & acetone makes a strong glue wasn’t a complete waste of time. Wear a mask, reinvent styrofoam to glue & help save the planet bc styrofoam can’t be recycled & doesn’t breakdown in the earth. **Although in Germany, we used a special bag for certain recycling & styrofoam was allowed. Idk y it’s not accepted here in the States. (ADHD- now I hv to research it). Happy random article perusal. ❤
so im, well i was, on a construction project to finish a project that was already 7 months delayed i quickly absorbed this cool tip and glued all our powertools to the 5-7 diamond steelplate floorboards i proudly admitted to my heroic deed and was rapidly showed the way out of the project i will continue my streak of success using this solvent and polystyrene, thank you bro
Well, in grade school the science teacher showed us this saying that Styrofoam was so bad for the environment when burned. CFC’s or something kills the ozone. But she didn’t say what to do with the liquid other than throw it away. Learn something everyday. Don’t burn the glue. Lol I wonder if that Chemical Change reduced CFCs making Styrofoam liquid safer to burn? I know the acetone made it easier to ignite.
Oh wow, the first idea is the best one in the whole article, why didnt i think of that one? I used acetone to dissolve the styrofoam, but i used the resulting glue, to permanently glue 3 screens onto my SSL 4000 G mixing desk. Now i just have to figure out, how to carve out some space for the ventilation for the desk. When there’s a will, there’s a way. Great article!
4:01 instead of a hard metal hexagonal Bolt head try it with a base made out of hard rubber like tires are made out of as that way your sandpaper should last longer and it conforms to the surface you’re trying to clean a lot easier and the both will work fine but you should have an intermediate layer of hard rubber between the bolt head and the Sandpaper
OH MyLanta! I am sooo glad I came across this today! I am so happy and excited! Exactly what I was needing was some glue. I use a lot of it on all my projects I do but getting tired of paying through the roof on it and most don’t even work that great. Man I can’t wait to try this and hope it works! I love articles like this! If this really works good, you have an instant subscriber from me, from just this one article! ❤
Acetone is not that cheap. How strong is this glue ? Does it weaken over time ? Can you use it outside where there is lots of UV ? Acetone only dissolves certain kinds of foam also. I know the SM styrofoam on the exterior of my house starts to disintegrate in the sunlight. So I don’t know how this glue he makes will hold up outside. I think I will buy the exterior landscaping glue. I used it on my garden stones outside to make a garden planter. 20 years now outside in rail and sun and the glue did not let go.
This is amazing and a new breakthrough as far as I’m concerned. Getting rid of Styrofoam was one of the most hardest things to do of all time. It’s extremely bad for the environment as it doesn’t break down. But here we go this acetone trick can dissolve styrofoam that’s amazing… My only question would be is the glue that it makes toxic… Is it toxic to the touch… If it gets significant or of absorbed through the skin… It’s a valley question and it should be researched… If you can just buy acetone and have everyone, drop their style for my your doorstep and you make a product like glue. You’d be a millionaire overnight.
If you have a nasty neighbour you can always glue up all his gate and doorways with this acetone- styrofoam mixture! And he will never know what happened till he smells the stink of acetone from your shed! I used this glue to repair old books . It is an excellent adhesive. And you can mould the foam into useful things too. One dry it is very hard and tough. I suggest adding a dye to the mixture as the glue has a rather brownish color!
The ancient Greeks made something similar for use against wooden boats at sea I think they called it Greek fire and the same thing can be done with gasoline or quite a few other solvents and I’ve done something similar with a glass beer bottle and rag and a little squirt of Dawn dish soap but be careful because I like to call it sticky fire and you don’t want to get it on you if you can’t get it off fast enough. (Think Napalm)
I don’t understand (my fault) but what is the point of gluing a silicone gun and a tape mesure to a piece of wood? Can somebody explain? I must have missed the explanation, but I’ve watched the article three times now and can’t see why? As far as I can see the glue gun is now next to useless as is the tape measure. Why would I want to use a tape measure that has a glue gun stuck to it?
What you call “hacks” is what used to be properly called “TIPS”. How this became a sloppy misnomer of today now know as hack or hacks is unknown to me. Hack or hacking means to cut through something quickly and sloppily. None of these things are really genius. They have hole saws to drill holes in dry wall. The same with melting styrofoam into acetone to make glue. They have actual glues for this. It would make a great bonding agent if only you are in a pinch and have the resources to do so. They have grinding wheels and all the things that you are using for every day projects. The styrofoam is the only thing that is really useful but only in emergency cases. It’s fun to be creative but for all the work that goes into doing all this you could use for things that are more worthy of your time. The comment below mine is a smart assed remark concerning this only worded differently.
Ever find yourself perusal some stupid movie, like, “Jaws III In 3D” and assuring yourself that any second now there will be some type of redeeming moment. I think it’s some type of morbid fascination we all have, you know, that thing that makes us want to look at a bad auto accident knowing full well that we might see something horrifying. Well, that the only explanation I have to offer as to why I watched this whole article. I did learn something from this. If I ever need to glue my caulking gun and tape measure to a piece for scrap plywood all I have to do is get some pieces of Styrofoam, then use some acetone to split up the long chain of molecules of the polymerized styrene which will then allow the air to be released causing the volume to shrink radically, then use the remaining goop as glue.
After perusal 8 minutes of this, I realized that I have no life what-so-ever! Thanks a lot! A tip for you pyros is to dissolve styrofoam in gasoline making DIY napalm. Just remember to store it in a air-tight, glass container as it will evaporate otherwise! Or how to weaponize your Super Soaker! Yes, this is probably illegal!
Add tge foam to some petrol and u have something that burns hot and is hard to put out and u can plaster it all over things, light it while wet or wait for it to dry plus u can put it out and re light it days or months after it does give off alot of thick black smoke tho Used to have a lot of fun with it as teens
An 8 oz jar or acetone is about $10.00. Add styrofoam to make a glue. Interesting, but easier to simply buy elmers glue. Also, who wnats to GLUE a caulk gun, tape measure or any other tool to a board? So you have to pry off the tool to use it and then re-glue it to the board, versus simply using a pegboard and hooks? Fascinating, but not practical. Same goes with creating a hole-saw drill attachment, versus simply buying one. (fascinating but not practical).
To Dumb didn’t watch: Melting Styrtofoam to make “glue”, Using bolts to make a “Hole Saw/Spade Bit”, using bolt to make a “sanding disk”, using pipe to make a “leather punch”… It would be faster and cheaper to just go buy the right shit… Menards:: Tube of Liquid Nails: $2.39; Hole Saw 7 piece KIT: $3.55; Spade Bit 3 piece set: $4.43; Sanding Disk Set 11 piece: $8.89 (~.81 cents per); FROM TANDY:: Leather punch is 1.99 for a tip or 4.99 for a round punch… So how much money did you really save “Genious”?
Did you ever consider that the chemical reaction that the acetone and Styrofoam are making is toxic for you to be breathing in? I’m no chemist, however I do know you are not supposed to burn Styrofoam because the smoke is very toxic for humans to inhale. I’m assuming the same applies with this scenario. Might want to do some research before you try this or get some ppe.
