How Quickly Do Anemones Grow In Rock Gardens?

Rock flower anemones, a popular invertebrates, can grow up to 8 inches in diameter in the wild and 4 inches wide in an aquarium setting. They are photosynthetic carnivores that accept a wide range of foods during broadcast feedings or direct feeding, usually three times per week. They attach to rockwork fairly quickly, so it is recommended to kill flow makers for safe attachment.

Rock flower anemones do not grow very fast, but they are photosynthetic, so you don’t even have to feed them as long as your tank is lit. They typically grow between 1 to 2 inches in diameter and can grow up to 4 inches wide. In the wild, there have been documented cases of Rock Flower Anemones that are up to 8 inches.

There is no exact growth rate for rock flower anemones, but they grow faster in natural habitats than in captivity. The growth rate depends on foods, lighting, and flow in captivity. Proper acclimatation into your tank is crucial, as it may be stressed from shipping and need time to adjust to your tank’s conditions. Drip acclimation is recommended.

Rock flower anemones stay relatively small, typically reaching 1-2 inches in diameter, with some specimens growing up to 8 inches. Fertilization occurs internally in the female, and their growth speed is slow. They typically stay relatively small, measuring between 1 to 2 inches in diameter, but can grow up to 4 inches wide.

In summary, rock flower anemones are a fascinating and photosynthesis-dependent invertebrate that can live up to 80 years in captivity. They are photosynthetic carnivores that require proper care and management to thrive.

However, they are not recommended to plant them outside in cold regions where soil gets deeply frozen, as they may not survive the winter. Soaking the corms before planting is crucial to prevent dryness and rot.

Anemones flourish in conditions of moderate to strong current, which is analogous to the environment of reef life. Anemones bloom around 3-4 months after planting and last 4-6 weeks. They can be harvested as soon as the flowers open, which open during daylight and close at night. Harvesting in bunches is best in mornings or evenings, as open petals are more prone to damage. The best stage for elongating the flower by 10mm (½ inch) is when the flower has just started to elongate from the green leafed collar below.

  • I have a tank that is roughly 1.4 year old and I bought 2 rock flowers anemones around the second month of the tank being established. I don’t feed them and feed my fish pellets 3x a day and within the last 2 months there has been dozens of baby flower anemones all round my tank. The mature rock flowers are on the opposite side of each other on a 4ft long tank. At first I was excited about having them but now it’s getting out of control and also they all seem to be all green for some reason, could be that my tank is missing or low on some element that gives them there colors. As for filtration I have a clearisea filter roller which supposedly is 50 microns and the baby flower anemones are also growing in the mini frag area in my sump which means there going through the filter roller. I have also separated a few of them and feed them a small amount of coral foods once a week to see it that will help in changing there colors, but so far there still all green.

  • Great article – I am trying to set up a 50 gallon lagoon with mainly rock flowers, trying to find a supplier in Toronto is not easy. You had mentioned RFA’s and clowns – this article has a clown with one. youtu.be/S1XjodqhMYc. Anecdotal as you say – much like Clown’s living near a pump. Mine like the intake vent.
