How Often Container Hydrangeas Need Be Watered?

Container plants, such as hydrangeas, require more water than in-ground plants due to their tendency to dry out quickly. To ensure success, it is essential to give them a good watering twice a week, especially during hot and sunny periods. It is also crucial to test and water container-grown hydrangeas daily, as they tend to dry out faster.

To create beautiful potted hydrangeas, follow these 9 steps: choose the right pot, plant correctly, provide the right amount of sun, water often, fertilize sparingly, prune as needed, and know when to transplant. Check the hydrangea for water every day or two, especially in hot, dry weather. If the top inch of soil feels dry, water thoroughly. As the plants grow, the roots take up more space in the container, so it is important to check regularly for when to water and give the plant regular soakings, especially during warmer periods.

When watering hydrangeas, water the container at least twice a week, and when watering plants in the ground, water them at least three times a week to help establish a strong root system. Watering the hydrangeas until the soil is thoroughly moist, especially early morning or later evening when the sun isn’t as intense.

Hydroscopes should be watered about one inch per week, spread across three watering sessions, evenly distributed at the roots and never over. As the plant matures, it will need more frequent watering as the roots start to take up more soil space. Hand watering allows for more frequent watering, and it is better to give the plant plenty of water a few days a week rather than a little every day.
