Chlorophyll is a crucial pigment in plants that gives them their green color due to its ability to absorb green wavelengths of white light. The ages of the leaf and plant have a combined effect on the photosynthetic parameters at various stages of chlorophyll. This study aims to understand how light intensity influences plant morphology and photosynthesis in the forage crop alfalfa (Medicago sativa L. cv. Zhongmu 1), focusing on the impact of light quality on leaf area growth, biomass content, and pigment accumulation.
Chlorophyll breakdown is a hallmark of senescence, as it unmasks yellow carotenoids and highlights the synthesis of red. Red light plays an important role in controlling the functions of the chloroplast, stem and petiole growth, and the reproductive system. Chlorophyll is the plant’s powerhouse, producing sugars using sunlight to grow and store reserves in seeds, tubers, or bulbs. If a plant produces more chlorophyll, it can produce more sugars, ultimately leading to higher yields.
Chlorophyll is an essential photosynthetic pigment to the plant, determining photosynthetic capacity and plant growth. It causes leaves to appear green and plays a role in the plant’s response to environmental stressors such as temperature changes. Decreased leaf chlorophyll concentration can improve light distribution in the canopy and increase the availability of light at lower layers.
In conclusion, chlorophyll is essential in plant development, as it helps plants achieve their green color and absorb light effectively.

What is the role of chlorophyll in a plant?
Chlorophyll, a green pigment found in chloroplasts, is responsible for photosynthesis, which involves the capture of sunlight’s light energy and the conversion of water and carbon dioxide into glucose and oxygen. The glucose is then utilized by the plants for the growth of various plant parts.
What happens to plants that lack chlorophyll?
A plant without chlorophyll is one that does not produce its own food via photosynthesis, with around 3000 non-photosynthetic plants worldwide. These plants can parasitize other plants or fungi, such as the Indian pipe in Pennsylvania, which has ghost-white flowers, leaves, and a scaly stem. The process behind photosynthesis involves converting carbon dioxide and water into breathable oxygen (O2) and a sugar, which is the plant’s energy source. This process happens within a plant-specific organelle called a chloroplast, which is a tiny working feature within a cell.
Chloroplasts, which are green flecks under a microscope, are activated by chlorophyll, a plant pigment, which initiates photosynthesis once it is “excited” by a photon of sunlight. These plants are fascinating to study due to their unique characteristics and the importance of photosynthesis in generating energy.
How does chlorophyll affect photosynthesis?
Chlorophyll absorbs light to convert carbon dioxide and water into glucose, absorbing the red and blue parts of the electromagnetic spectrum and reflecting the green part. Leaves with more chlorophyll absorb more light for photosynthesis. Graphs show that the rate of photosynthesis against a factor is slightly different when oxygen production or carbon dioxide uptake is used as a measure of photosynthetic rate. This is because oxygen production and carbon dioxide uptake are affected by photosynthesis.
Why is chlorophyll a most important in photosynthesis?
Chlorophyll a is the primary enzyme responsible for the conversion of light energy into chemical energy, a function that is distinct from that of chlorophyll b, which also exhibits light absorption properties.
What does chlorophyll for plant growth?
Chlorophyll is a crucial element in plants that absorbs light and converts it into glucose, a sugar. This process, along with nutrients from the soil, creates new leaves and other plant parts. Chlorophyll’s green color is due to its ability to reflect light wavelengths, which are absorbed by plants. Autotrophs use photosynthesis to produce their own food, while heterotrophs eat plants or animals. Food webs in all ecosystems, from terrestrial to marine, begin with photosynthesis, making chlorophyll a foundation for all life on Earth.
What happens when you give chlorophyll to plants?
Chlorophyll is a natural compound found in green plants that gives them color and aids in photosynthesis. It is found in green vegetables and plant-based foods like algae. There are two types of chlorophyll: chlorophyll a and chlorophyll b, both fat-soluble compounds with antioxidant properties. Chlorophyll moves around the body in micelles, which contain fat. Although research isn’t conclusive on the minimum amount of fat needed for chlorophyll metabolism, small amounts of healthy fats may help the body process it during meals.
What affects chlorophyll content in plants?
Chlorophyll content in plants varies based on factors such as cultivar, harvest time, ripening stage, plant parts, storage conditions, and processing. Different extraction and quantification methods can cause incompatible chlorophyll contents. Does chlorophyll affect plant growth?
Chlorophyll is a crucial plant hormone that produces sugars through sunlight, which are stored in seeds, tubers, or bulbs for harvesting. Increased chlorophyll production leads to higher sugar yields. However, factors like lack of sunlight, water, nitrogen, magnesium, iron, and manganese can inhibit optimal chlorophyll production. In practical situations, such as droughts, insufficient water availability can lead to insufficient availability of these nutrients.
How does chlorophyll affect leaves?
The process of food production occurs in millions of leaf cells, each containing chlorophyll, a green pigment that gives a leaf its green color due to the abundance of chlorophyll in a mature leaf.
What is chlorophyll and how does it help the plant photosynthesize?
Chlorophyll, a complex green pigment found in plants, algae, and certain bacteria, is essential for photosynthesis by absorbing light energy and converting it into chemical energy. These pigments are abundant in green fruits and vegetables and have therapeutic properties, including antioxidant, antimutagenic, antigenotoxic, anti-cancer, and anti-obesogenic effects. However, leafy materials and fruit peels often go to waste in the food supply chain, contributing to the issue of food waste in modern societies.
These overlooked materials contain valuable bioactive compounds, including chlorophylls, which offer significant health benefits. Exploring the potential of these discarded resources, such as using them as functional food ingredients, aligns with the principles of a circular economy and presents exciting opportunities for exploitation.
Why does lack of chlorophyll cause stunted growth?
The loss of chlorophyll, which is responsible for the green coloration of plants, results in a reduction of photosynthesis and glucose production in leaves. This subsequently leads to a decrease in the energy available for growth and respiration, as glucose is a vital component of these processes.

Hello just wanted to say I have been using liquid chlorophyll for about 3 months now, and have notice these benefits. 1. I no longer have night sweats 2. I really do smell better 3. I have an annoying pain in my shoulder for 2 years that finally stop hurting. 4. Generally feeling better all over. 1 negative I have to pee alot more. But then I am drinking alot more water
I’ve been taking a chlorophyll supplement for 7/8 years. When I first started, I took the recommended dose on bottle. I had my usual blood work done and my doctor called and asked if I was taking an iron supplement because my iron levels were off the charts. She suggested I cut it by at least half. So far so good. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
HELP…. Wife (54yrs)and I (62 yrs)were military brats, plus I served 4 years. We both lived on Superfund sites. High chemical exposure- TCE, PCE, agent Orange, jet fuel… over 70 chemicals. We both have Parkinsonism effects. Any ideas you have would be Greatly Appreciated. We do take SPIRULINA, Moringa, iodine, daily vitamin, Salmon & krill oil. Thank you for all your time and efforts helping all of us! ✌🏻
I take the liquid supplement daily.. 1 tablespoon in my fresh cucumber juice 😋🥰 I’m just now realizing the supplement form is actually chlorophyllin and contains copper instead of magnesium.. it’s touted to have the same benefits though.. green leafy plants give me pain, so I take it instead.. it works for me!✨
So I just started trying this supplement this week. I know it has detoxing effects, but does it also make you feel tired? I’m not sure if it’s related but I’ve been feeling really tired. And I think it started kicking in because I’ve been having an upset stomach and I did have vomiting. (Unless it was something else!) just curious! Thank you for anyone who has a response ❤️ I’m not sure if I should stick it through and keep contributing it, or if anyone had had a similar experience.
Doctor, I am a 16-year-old girl. I had hemiplegia twice in a row, once at the age of 14, and she was on the right side of my face and once at 15, and she was on the right side of my face. I went to a general practitioner and he gave me medicine for the first time, and the disease lasted with me for a month and The second time I need a needle, but I no longer remember the name of the medicine or needles, and the disease stayed with me for two months. And this disease affected me negatively, as I became very nervous and affected a lot, and it also affected my life. Because of it, I failed in my studies, but now I am cured, but I am afraid that it will return to me this year. I hope that you advise me and talk about this disease. I wish you all success and thank you for The efforts you are making
Will you do a article on ways to increase Dopamine? I was curious what your thoughts were on if it’s safe or effective to take Phenylalanine or Tyrosine supplements. I’ve been taking L-Tryptophan essential amino acids for almost 2 wks & noticed big improvements in mood & sleep. But that’s more Serotonin related. I was curious about helping with Dopamine. I have a horrid memory, family history of Parkinson’s Disease, some depression & struggle with concentration & especially motivation. I’ve been working out regularly, eating better & taking vitamin D. But I was just wondering if there was something more I could do to help. I tried to look through all your articles but didn’t notice any mentioning Dopamine. I love your articles, thanks for the amazing content!
thank you so much for your articles Dr. Berg. I started following your advice about 10 days ago. the problem I am facing is that I have to take coumadin and as I’m sure you know, I can’t eat many of the vegetables that you talk about. I feel like this is holding me back a bit but I have no choice. I have been fasting for 16 hours and sometimes even longer and have 2 good meals and so far I feel great and I want to continue this IF and KETO plan. I live in Italy so good quality meat, fish and vegetables are never an issue. I never hear you mention anything about blood thinners and the challenges and solutions of not being able to eat green leafy vegetables. could you let us know what the best alternatives are? thank you so much… ciao! from Venezia, Italia
Dr berg you might not believe this but today I decided to leave this comment and I hope from the almighty Allah you will see it. I’m been always perusal articles and I benefited a lot from your knowledge because simply all your searches match with our lives styles as Muslims. Most of the habits advised from you we already fallow it as Muslims. I don’t know how deep understanding you have about Islam but I always pray that God the creator perfect your knowledge even better better so May one day I hear that Dr Berg is a muslim. My my sincere wishes with success. 🌸
I really like your articles, Have question on the greens. I follow a specific no carb /dairy/fruit diet : only eat eggs, protein like chicken, fish, paneer(indian cheese) and almost every edible leafs that grocery stores has and mostly raw or juicer with out even dressings. While the diet works out to drop the weight . This is leading to constipation 🙁 . Also take supplements on B,C,D,omega,Daily vitamin, calcium-magnesium and liver detox. Any suggestions on constipation really helps.
Chlorophyll is a great thing to use.To be honest, what happened to me personally.I watch lots of your articles and decided to try to use not fortified yeast i bought one.But what happened to me,iv got Candida, really bad one.I took pill to stop it,but Candida was so strong i just decided to take Chlorophyll and see And Wow its gone, not right away, but whiting 3 days i felt better. So, I tried yeast on my body and can say, that maybe, for man body it is ok,but woman are more getting Candida.Need to be careful
Since you seem to be a doctor who is often given advice because you obviously know what you’re talkin about I have a question that my doctors have not seem to be able to answer for me. I do not have or take any insulin for diabetes. But for some reason every time I eat and if I don’t eat heavily complex carbs within 15 minutes my sugar level drop like dangerously low numbers 50s. Only know because my dad is diabetic and I use his monitor whatever that does happen. I’ll be walking somewhere and all the sudden everything will get blurry and I can’t stand up straight . People think I’m drunk or high. But I would feel like I’m about to pass out. No matter how big or small the military. Whether it’s cereal, toast bacon or even full-out pancakes and sausage. But it happens with every meal. So I have been having to eat oatmeal with every meal to keep my carbs up. Do you know what can help this may be called? And or what kind of doctor could someone see for that?
Hi Dr. Berg, I’ve been perusal your youtube articles since 2018 and I’ve learned a lot from you. But I have a question if mccormick vanilla flavor is keto friendly? I just put it in my almond flour pancakes lately and it really tastes so good, however, I’m kinda worried it might have a little bit of hidden sugar on it, although they don’t put it on their label, but maybe they put cornstarch on it or something with their artificial flavorings ingredients. I just used the artificial vanilla flavor and not the real one because it’s so expensive. I hope you can answer my question on this. I googled it many times but I wasn’t able to get the specific answer in there. Thank you very much. I’ll be waiting for your answer.
Plz do a article on current scenario in India…… Black Fungus …..plz…… instead of what it is, and that there is only a body damaging medicine as it’s treatment……I wish someone would come forward….with an actual cure for it……Dr berg we trust u …….. could you come up with something….
I don’t trust Liquid Chlorophyll. It’s too cheap for one. It’s Synthetic, and is basically just sodium copper salts. It contains way too much copper which gives you headaches from toxicity. I’d love to know the truth as to what exactly I’m drinking. I think getting Chlorophyll from a whole food supplement is better. Like Wheat Grass bought, or grown myself, not a powdered juice made by another company.
Eric Berg literally wants us to eat grass (like cows) and no one is even the least bit skeptical. Wow. Just wow. Also, I’ve seen carnivores claim that they got rid of their body odor, including bad breadth, with a 100% carnivore diet. e.g. Carnivore Yogi. If anyone knows where to get citations for his claims about cancer and chlorophyll (maybe from other articles?), please share the links.
Dr Berg if your aware of all this? Why not just eat plants and leave the meats alone?? We use plants to feed the animals your always talking about eating grass fed meat. However why do that? We don’t need meat to live and can be healthy without that in our diet. You yourself say the benefits of plants yet you promote a meaty diet? Why? Tell the truth deep down you know a planet base diet makes more sense. Why eat animals that are fed plants when we can eat the plants ourselves make that make sense? There’s no fiber in meats.
So … “it can counter negative effects of meat”… with no explanation. “blood builder” …. no explanation. I’m stopping here. You are just talking nonsense and you know it. Of course eating vegetables is good for you. “I’m tired of earth. These people. I’m tired of being caught in the tangle of their lives.” -Dr. Jonathan Osterman. “You all are idiots” – Me
