We shouldnt be saying we are saving the planet because the planet will be fine. We should be saying we are saving the human race. ‘Saving the planet’ is an incorrect way of saying ‘Saving humanity’ because the planet isn’t going away, we humans are. So saying we are ‘Saving humanity’ will have more of a profound impact in the selfish minds of humans to do something about climate change.
I’m a geologist and an environmental scientist; and the rocks do show that the climate is constantly changing. Conducting investigations I read ancient texts and again there’s evidence of climate change throughout history. However, when you look at the data from the past 50 years, there’s a deviation from the normal progression, other than projected natural causes, and there’s also an increase in CO2 into the atmosphere. Some of this can come from nature; but the human factor has also contributed to this increase. Remember how CFCs impacted the ozone layer. And remember how lead in gasoline impacted the environment. And let’s not forget DDT.
today my earth science professor was explaining how if we got rid of fossil fuels, our electricity bills will increase immensely; i agree that this is true but i think the future of our planet is a bit more important. Something like an increase in prices, is nothing compared to the affects of climate change. This is a serious problem and we must do something now before its too late.

I was looking into air composition today and I’ve noticed that most sources for info put our atmosphere carbon dioxide content at somewhere between 0.053% and 0.047%. Not a huge disparity in total percentage, yet it seems significantly different to me. Are the differences reflective of when these measurements were taken, which years I mean? Just trying to wrap my head around the idea that maybe this is an indicator of CO2 buildup between earlier measurements and current ones, or if this is just indicative of a margin for error. Also, is it known if there would be a “perfect” percentage of CO2 in our atmosphere to stabilize or make global warming more manageable?
I don’t think anyone should deny that this is real. But at the same point in time, what in the fuck are we supposed to do about it? Every article I have ever seen about this spends 90% of the time talking about how doomed we are, and the. 5% at the end telling us things we can do that would amount to taking a grain of salt out of the ocean. I haven’t heard a real, hardcore true solution yet that doesn’t involve getting rid of cars and electricity.
I have been doing all of the things he said for almost fifty years, somebody isn’t pulling their weight here or I am doing something wrong. Recycling is my specialty, have not bought a new car since 1978. Being a rancher, farmer and miner all my life, I feel like I did my share of walking, but never had the pleasure of public transportation. With the price of electricity these days, turning off electronics is automatic for most. Rich people don’t care, but neither do I, I’ve had this off-grid solar system for years. I have cut out almost all between meal meat consumption***, but there is only so much you can do. Breakfast requires meat, only three things go with eggs; bacon, ham and steak. I have chickens and turkeys and all they lay are eggs. Lunch is almost always recycled leftovers so that is very good. For dinners I broke a long-standing family holiday tradition of having turkey, ham and brisket one year. Caused quite a stir with dad but to be honest I just didn’t have a turkey worth butchering. Pretty sure I have grown more vegetables than Mr. Nye on a ratio of thousands to one so I’m real good there. No, this is a crisis, we need real action to stop anthropogenic global warming, the solutions are simple, and the USA could unilaterally start the process. Ban all air travel and war as a first step, this would be a massive reduction in carbon emissions. Then take the trillion dollars a year you were spending every year on the pentagon, FAA etc. and invest it in base load nuclear power plants.

During the heat wave that peaked with that record, five consecutive days reached 129° F (54°C) or above.” That was over 100 years ago, but they’re still trying to tell us temperatures are going up??? Not in Death Valley, evidently.
If it is true that there is a catastrophic impact in the offing, keeping oil in the ground will not be such an easy thing to do with a world population as large as it is today (and increasing) unless we dramatically convert to nuclear power. More hydro electricity, wind power, solar power, clean gas, and other types will certainly help and I hope we do much more of those, but to significantly replace the enormous amount of energy oil provides, nuclear power seems like the most likely candidate to reduce the impact of climate change in the time frame required.
People who refute climate change with “but it still snows” have no clue what climate is. Weather is what happens on one day. Climate is weather over long periods of time. Also, scientists are really concerned about how fast climate change is happening. It’s never, in the history of earth, happened as fast as it is now. If it were happening slower, animals (including humans), insects, amphibians, ect. would have time to adapt to the different climate but because of how fast it’s happening the world won’t be able to.
This is what I spread about climate change. It is not us the individual, its the part we cannot control as individuals that are damaging the environment. Only as a group who all decide to no longer accept certain practices that climate change will occur. Instead, I’ll import some warm climate fruit that was trained, trucked, and flown to my grocery store.
He’s acting like evolution isn’t a thing. Climate change is a very slow and inconsistent process. 1 degrees in over 100 years? We’ll just evolve to fit the climate, no worries. Also, the absolute hottest periods occurred when humans never even existed, namely 56 million years ago. The dinosaurs had to adapt and evolve to suit the very high temperatures and toxic atmosphere that consisted of extreme oxygen, carbon dioxide and radiation levels. We actually live in the best era yet (well not really since we just evolved to it).

I hate to be “that guy”, but ackyshually, industry causes around 70% of all emissions. While recycling, eating less meat, and conserving energy are things we should do, we should really be pressuring our infrastructure, power generation, and other industries to become moar sustainable. “Eat less meat!” This annoys me so much because telling people this just makes them feel like they’re being attacked. Whilst I don’t personally eat meat, I know what it feels like to be told that you have to fundamentally change the way you live your life, when you already love it so much. I honestly think that everyone should eat less meat but they aren’t willing to change, because they don’t feel like it makes sense for them to change. Unless they have literally almost died as a result of eating meat, they won’t have a personal incentive to change! Seriously though, eat less meat, it’s good for the environment, your health and happiness too, you don’t know till you’ve tried!
Something that used to confuse me: Archimedes principle states that an object immersed in a fluid is buoyed up by a force equal to the weight of the fluid it displaces, making so that the melting of ice in water couldn’t possibly raise the sea levels, because the volume would stay the same. The thing is that glacier ice is mostly made of fresh water, inferior in density to saltwater and thus any body of freshwater occupies a bigger volume than a body of salt water of the same mass. That means that when a glacier melts, it contributes to a greater volume of melt water than it originally displaced (not by much but it remains alarming)
What we do know for certain is higher CO2 levels, warmer temps and more percipitation harbors more plant life. So lets plant more trees and enjoy the beauty and consequential rise in O2 levels. Bring back the climate of the Jurassic when CO2 levels averaged 1200ppm. Please explain ocean acidity then Bill, when the ocean was teaming with life and CO2 levels were so high.

well it’s kind of ironic because the reason the heating and cooling took place in the beginning was because of all the earthquakes we know Haiti moved the Earth 1. 8 in closer to the Sun… So just imagine Pangea rocking the Earth back and forth in its orbit that was the reason the heating and cooling took place the first time part of the reason… It’s not hard to put two and two together…

It is also good for agriculture, increasing the yields of crops worldwide. 5. Global warming has not increased natural disasters. 6. Climate policy must respect scientific and economic realities. 7. There is no climate emergency. Therefore, there is no cause for panic.
I think maybe we have a fundamental misunderstanding of our planet. There is one molecule in the atmosphere that does not belong and that is nitrogen. Did you ever wonder why farmers have to use nitrogen enriched soil to keep crop yields up? Maybe because 78% of there nitrogen is in the atmosphere and not in the ground where it wants to be. In Brickleberry: Global Warming, Woody Johnson was the world’s biggest climate denier and he blew a lot of money on his own industrial complex, Woody Johnson Incorporated, just for making carbon emissions…and nothing else. I saw Bill Nye (voiced by somebody else) animated in that episode, and he got really mad at Woody Johnson’s irresponsibility.
We need to stop hurting our planet or the life on this planet will go away and there will be a big blame on humanity. We need to straighten our actions and save the life that depend on this planet or there will be another bad exiction coming upon it and us humans will be gone. We must survive and maintain and balance our world.
We are cooked. The world warmed by over 1 degree with the amount of CO2 accumulated over the last 100 years. That CO2 is still there and we are adding more at a far higher rate and increasing. Now positive feedback loops associated with the ice free poles, thawing permafrost, and deforestation are taking that rate even higher. Eating less meat and carpooling isn’t cutting it.
Or we all see climate change as real, but very much a natural cycle. As far as solutions, be realistic. Solar and wind energy aren’t efficient enough to make the switch, considering the resources used in their manufacturing (something conveniently left out). If you’re really convinced of human-caused global warming, then you should be advocating for nuclear. I’d be all for renewable energy if its use could be justified, but at this time, it just isn’t, and everyone who thinks it is, is just kidding themselves. My only argument against fossil fuels are the effects on air quality. Is pollution bad? Absolutely. Is it causing climate change? Nope.
Wt The higher the temperature, the more the oceans will evaporate, then there will be more humidity and more precipitation, the desert will decrease plants regarding moisture and carbon dioxide will grow faster, the history of the earth is such that if global warming was antiquity, then it was a paradise for the biosphere,. .and when global cooling was then the evaporation of the oceans would decrease and precipitation would decrease, the desert would increase, this would collapse for the biosphere, the largest desert Antarctica, the hottest place the rainforests.
I do have a question though. In my weather and atmosphere class that recommended this article, we were told: “The elements that control major features of the Earth’s climate have not always been the same as they are presently. In fact, they have been drastically different in the past. These “past climates”…have ranged from biologically friendly conditions (similar to today) to conditions that were incredibly inhospitable to life! Thus, knowing the Earth’s past climates is important to understanding: How our current climate, and its underlying elements, formed. Why past lifeforms may have become extinct. Which current lifeforms dominate the modern landscape. etc.” I know there is a resilience factor involved in the recoverability of ecosystems, but if the above is true, why would Bill Nye say that the changes we are causing to our planet are irreversible? What good would small changes make? We would need drastic changes (for example if everyone went back to living like we were in the Stone Age). How and why would scientists believe that the changes are irreversible? Would there not be there not be some sort of cyclical correction, eventually? Even if it was in thousands of years from now? Especially if it got so bad that most of humanity was wiped out.

Who decides what is small? How do you make sure your statsticians choice of what is deemed small is objective? How can you know that some global effect is bad? Something being bad is only experience of an individual existing locally. Your experience is the onlye one you have insight into. You cannot decide what is “objectively” good or bad. Or do you believe in th god of scientism? Science can’t tell you what is small, what is good, or what to do. But the religion of scientism is about pushing politics.
