Staking a sunflower is crucial for its growth and health. To properly stake a sunflower, use a large bamboo pole or rod driven into the ground, with a diameter of 1/2″ to 1″ and a height of 5-7 feet. Tie the sunflower at several points along the stem to reduce point stress. Staking tall sunflowers helps them against strong winds and prevents them from falling over.
When young, stake the stem to a tall stake to support the weight of the flower when it grows. Gently staking the stem with a bamboo or wooden stake secures it in the ground without damaging the roots. As the sunflower grows taller, stake them again.
To secure the stake, use wood or metal stakes placed close to the stalk and attach the stalk to the stake with twine or ties. Choose soft ties, such as strips made from old T-shirts or wire coated with foam, to avoid cutting into the plant as it sways in the breeze.
Tie the sunflower to a bamboo stick, a robust stick, or even a fence. Place a stake in the ground about three inches from the base of the stem and use twine to tie the flower to the stake to keep them upright.
Staking sunflowers can increase the amount of light they get directly above them, protect them from slugs and snails, and water regularly. Staking them may also be necessary if they are in an exposed position.
