How Are Peonies Propped Up?

To support peonies, it is essential to set up supports in early spring when the peony shoots are just beginning. This allows the support rings or cages to guide the plant’s growth and protect it from harsh weather conditions. If large peony shrubs haven’t grown through a support cage, corraling them using canes or metal rods and several rows of jute twine or thin wire can help keep them upright and looking their best.

To ensure your peonies don’t fall over or lay limp on the ground, use peony rings, grids, or cages early in the spring to provide invisible support. Proper staking helps showcase the full beauty of peonies in your garden, with various options available.

Start by placing strong metal or wood stakes around the perimeter of the peony row every 4-8 feet. Place the netting over the stakes, suspending it horizontally over the plants, 18-20 inches above the ground. Make sure the netting is pulled tight and not loose.

Alternatively, use a stake and twine or hoop to keep your peony plants upright as they grow and give them additional support. For example, cut branches off of a junk mulberry bush and tie one knee high around it to support the blooms from dropping perfectly.

For each stem, use slender canes or discreet metal stakes, insert into the ground close to each stem, and secure them using soft plant ties. Place them an inch from the base of each stem and secure in place using garden twine, like natural jute twine from Walmart.

Lastly, push a bamboo stake into the center of the plant, ensuring that it is about 6 inches taller than the plant before pushing it into the ground.
