Growing Sunflowers Next To Goats?

Sunflowers are a nutritious, healthy, and delicious treat for goats. They offer various benefits, including improved digestion, leading to cover crops like Alfalfa and Rye, and providing a good source of fiber. To incorporate sunflower plants into your goat’s diet, you can serve them fresh or dried sunflower heads, leaves, and seeds.

Sunflower seeds are a low-maintenance addition to any garden, and they should be a supplement to a balanced diet. Choose a sunny location with well-drained soil and sow seeds 1/2 to 1 inch deep, spacing them 6-12 inches apart, depending on the variety. Larger sunflower varieties need more space, but you can utilize it by planting trees and shrubs that goats prefer to eat.

Sunflower seeds should be planted in a compact manner, with seed packets indicating that closer planting results in a more compact plant. They can also be used as bird food, which goats love. If you take a handful of sunflower seeds and throw them around in spring, they should sprout into sunflowers.

Goats prefer to feed stocks at maturity when they are still greenish, so cut off the SF heads for drying and toss the green heads into the sunflower stock. Sunflower fields should not be planted near flyways or roosts, as birds can be a problem if they are planted near these areas.

In summary, sunflowers are a nutritious, healthy, and delicious treat for goats, and their use can contribute to a balanced diet.

What are the best conditions for growing sunflowers?

Sunflowers thrive in full, bright sun and evenly moist, well-drained soil. The space needed depends on the variety, with branching types needing more horizontal space than large single-flowered types. Choose a spot for taller varieties where they won’t overshadow other shorter plants. Sunflowers are warm-weather plants, so they can be planted outside alongside other warm-season vegetables and flowers. For a longer bloom period, plant a row or grouping of sunflowers every two weeks for four to six weeks during early summer.

To prepare the soil for planting sunflowers, mix Miracle-Gro® All Purpose Garden Soil with native soil, which will help feed new plants and build strong roots. The best path to sunflower success is a combination of great soil and the right plant food, so refer to the “How to Feed Sunflowers” section for more information.

Is there a difference between sunflower seeds and black oil sunflower seeds?

Black oil sunflower seeds are a popular choice for birds due to their higher oil content and meatier texture. These seeds provide birds with more calories and fat per bite, saving them time and energy expenditure while searching for food. They are easier to open for humans due to their larger size, but harder for small birds with weak beaks. Additionally, their thin shell allows birds to open them with less energy expenditure. Black oil sunflower seeds are a healthier option for birds, especially during winter when they require more food.
