Figs are small trees or shrubs that can be grown in both warm and temperate regions, making them an essential addition to any Southern garden. They produce delicious fruit with flavors best experienced ripe from the tree. To grow figs, choose a warm, sheltered spot in full sun, either in pots or using rubble or submerged paving slabs to restrict root growth. Keep pot-grown plants well-watered and feed them with tomato food once fruits start appearing.
Fig trees need warm conditions and subtropical climates to thrive, but they can tolerate some cold in winter as long as it remains above 15°F. In winter, move the tree indoors and keep the soil moist. For outdoor fig trees, plant them in the spring or early fall in full sun. Fig trees prefer a full sun spot protected from high winds and should have a free draining, neutral pH soil.
Fig trees can be placed in containers or in the ground, but they require plenty of space. The soil should be consistently moist, not too dry or saturated. A fig tree can be planted at any time of year as long as the ground isn’t frozen, and they can be kept in their pot for a season if needed, but be sure to water well.
To ensure the best care for your fig tree, prune suckers or propagate them and use netting to keep away birds. Fig trees can also be grown in containers or in the ground, but they require plenty of space and consistent moisture.

What is the best food for Fig trees?
Fig trees require a general-purpose, slow-release organic fertilizer with a pH of 8-8-8 or 10-10-10. Over-fertilization can promote leafy growth and not produce much fruit, especially in colder regions. Choose a slow-release organic fertilizer that maintains slightly acidic soil conditions. Figs can tolerate mildly alkaline soil but may not be as productive. Avoid over-applying fertilizer or using it as a cure-all if the tree appears stressed.
Can fig leaves be eaten?
Fig leaves have a mild, coconut and vanilla flavor with a grassy, herbaceous edge. They are used in fish, meat dishes, and desserts, particularly ice cream and custard-based treats. They can be used in various cooking and baking preparations, from grilling to steeping. Fig leaves can be boiled for tea, added to soups and stews for a nutty, vanilla-y taste, or steeped in syrup for cocktails or jam-making. Southern restaurant Husk in Nashville serves house-made fig leaf jelly with country ham and soft rolls.
Pastry chefs infuse dairy with fig leaves to make fig leaf ice cream, panna cotta, and crème brûlée. However, fig leaves contain an enzyme called ficin, which can coagulate dairy. To avoid this, pastry chef Sasha Piligian recommends separating the leaves from the stem after toasting them. Fig leaves can also be incorporated into doughs, as seen in New York City-based baker Natasha Pickowicz’s recipe for leafy dinner rolls.
What is the best fertilizer for a fig tree?
Fig trees can be fed with organic plant foods or inorganic fertilizers, but organic plant foods are preferred as they are non-burning, non-excessive, and free from chemicals or other inorganic substances. When planting a fig tree during the dormant season, fertilizer should be stopped until new growth emerges in spring. For established trees, fertilizer or organic plant food can be applied when new growth begins in spring, and an additional application can be applied in late spring or early summer. The type of fertilizer used depends on the specific needs of the tree. It is important to follow the application instructions on the product label to ensure the best results.
What is the best fertilizer for fig trees?
To fertilize fruit trees, it is recommended to use a fertilizer that has been specifically designed for such trees or an all-purpose fertilizer that contains a balanced ratio of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. This type of fertilizer is known to promote the growth of foliage, the development of roots, the production of flowers, and the development of fruits.
Where do fig trees grow best?
Fig trees thrive in the Lower, Coastal, and Tropical South heat and can be planted near southern exposure in the Middle South. They can benefit from reflected heat and should be mowed well for winter. For Zone 6 or 7, cold-hardy selections like ‘Brown Turkey’ and ‘Celeste’ are recommended. Fertilize fig trees with a balanced fertilizer in early spring or at planting time, especially in poor soil. Fertilize a second time in late spring for 1 or 2 year-old plants. Fig trees have small, inconspicuous flowers and produce different colored fruits, with most grown in home gardens bearing female flowers that develop into fruit without pollination.
Do fig leaves need sun?
The Fiddle Leaf Fig requires more sunlight than most plants due to its giant leaves. To ensure proper watering, water the plant between every 1-2 weeks, adjusting the rate based on the light and temperature of your home or office. Water the soil as a rainstorm, saturating it with ¼-⅓ of the pot’s volume, and letting it dry out. Water more often in brighter light and less often in lower light. Yellow leaves and wet potting mix indicate overwatering, while crispy, curling leaves indicate the plant needs more water. It is essential to monitor the plant’s growth and watering schedule to ensure it receives the necessary amount of sunlight.
Can fig plants be in direct sunlight?
Place your fiddle leaf fig in a south-facing window with strong afternoon sun protection to avoid burning its leaves. Fiddle leaf figs live in full sun in the wild and also have protection from nearby tree canopy. Ideally, place the plant in a south-facing window with steady sunlight all day long. If the window is not protected by eaves or an overhang, the plant should sit back a few feet to avoid direct sun on its leaves.
Consider the cumulative sun exposure your plant gets all day long, as it cannot store up sunlight for later use. A south-facing window provides the longest duration of sunlight, while east or west-facing windows provide only half the day or less. In winter, only a few hours of light per day are needed.
How often should I water a fig plant?
Overwatering or not allowing proper drainage can lead to the death of a fiddle leaf fig (FLF). To prevent this, water your plant once a week or every 10 days. FLFs are native to rainforest environments, so it’s best to soak the soil until dripping and let it dry completely between waterings. You can do this by taking the plant outside or to the bathtub, letting it drip for an hour or two, or setting it up on a plant stand over a drip tray. Ensure the roots aren’t sitting in excess water for an extended period. If you’re unsure when to water again, insert your finger into the top 2 inches of soil and leave it alone if it’s still wet.

Hi Jag, I got a fig tree from Walmart last year. It was pretty much a stick. I planted it, it’s in a super sunny spot. It’s in a spot that it will be able to grow. It’s doing well, lots of leaves and it’s looking healthy.
Will I loose my figs in pots on S.C. since I put it outside this year for the first time because of bugs? Should I ne oil it weekly? The tree is 6 years old and since I put the large pot outside it has 10 figs growing. It is warm 70+ in S.C. this time of year and I have full sun all day long! Should I move it to part shade?
We are in zone 9b with mostly mild Winters SW Arizona. Our Brown Turkey & Pinache Tiger are 4-5 years old and still only 4 feet tall. Have taken cuttings 3 of each all are doing very well. Question: How far do these tree’s roots spread? And how deep do the roots grow? According to your article I guess I can take the berm away & just dig deeper around the trees – correct? Of course with lots of mulch so here in this heat (it was 100 degrees today APRIL 26, 2022 – can you believe it?) the soil will be protected from drying out too fast. Judi
If you want great tasting figs….don’t water fig trees when their fruiting. Fig actually like dry places. “Growing conditions Fig thrives best in areas of moderate relative humidity and can be grown at higher elevations in areas of low rainfall. Fig requires some dry months, particularly at the flowering and fruiting periods and some sources, state that they require some winter chilling. They are light demanding plants and will grow best with 8 hours or more of direct sunlight. Fig can grow in virtually any soil type but prefer a sandy-clay loam within a pH range of 6.0 to 8.0 tolerating soils with high lime content. A soil depth of 1 – 1.5 m is sufficient for growth. Figs can also grow in rocky areas from sea level to 1,700 meters.” I grow Golden Riverside & BM kk.
