Especially What Effects Does Rock Salt Have On Soil Health?

Soil salts, which are soluble salts in the soil, can absorb water, leading to a decrease in water availability for plant uptake. This results in increased water stress within the soil, causing root dehydration, which can trigger physiological drought. Higher salt concentrations, especially alkaline salts, also reduce the availability of nutrients in the soil. Salinization is the process where soluble salts accumulate in the soil to levels detrimental to plant health and soil structure.

Soil salinization is a critical threat to agriculture and food security. Excess salts adversely affect soil structure and fertility, plant growth, and crop yield. The demand for intensive irrigated agriculture in canal networks, climate change, drought incidence, and water availability all contribute to this issue. Salts, depending on their ionic composition and concentration, can also affect soil processes such as soil water dynamics, structural stability, solubility of essential nutrients, and pH and pE of soil water.

When salts are present in excessive amounts in the soil, they disrupt plant physiology and affect the soil’s ability to hold water. Soil health is crucial for the continued capacity of soil to function as a vital living ecosystem that sustains plants, animals, and humans. Most crops do not grow well on soils containing salts due to the reduction in water availability for plant roots. Some salts are toxic to plants when present in high concentrations.

Salinity decreases the overall health of a soil by destroying soil structure, reducing infiltration and conductance of water, and increasing erosion. High salt levels in the soil can upset the nutrient balance in plants or interfere with the uptake of some nutrients. Salt spray can cause aerial and root damage, both acute and chronic.

Overall, excessive salts in soil impede plant uptake of water and cause plant tissues to become dry and discolored.

📹 Saline and sodic soils – the difference

Soil salinity and soil sodicity are often confused. While they both involve sodium, they have very different effects. This video clearly …

What does rock salt do to the soil?

Rock salt can cause damage to lawns and garden beds when plowed or shoveled with salt-laden snow. Soil salts absorb water, leading to physiological drought and root dehydration, which can reduce plant growth if not corrected. The displacement of other mineral nutrients by sodium ions also affects soil quality, increasing compaction and decreasing drainage and aeration. Damage from salt can be delayed, with symptoms appearing in summer or years later.

The extent of damage varies with plant type, salt type, fresh water availability, runoff movement, and application time. De-icing salts without sodium is safer for plants than sodium chloride. Late winter salts result in more damage than early winter salts, as the salt is likely leached away before active root growth in spring. The volume of fresh water applied to soils also impacts salt leaching, and rainfall can wash salt from leaves.

What are the disadvantages of rock salt?

Rock salt, a cheaper alternative to evaporated salt, has several disadvantages, including increased particulate matter release into the atmosphere, unguaranteed road safety, clogged asphalt pores, destroyed concrete surfaces, and non-compliance with concrete standards. The cost of acquiring rock salt is 20 times cheaper than evaporated salt, but these drawbacks are significant for people, the environment, roads, winter maintenance equipment, and subsequent costs. In practice, rock salt has a higher proportion of insoluble substances than de-icing salt, resulting in additional dust pollution.

What does rock salt do to roots?

The use of rock salt is a method employed to eradicate tree roots within sewer lines. This is achieved by the extraction of moisture from the roots, which subsequently impairs their ability to absorb nutrients. However, the repeated use of this method has the potential to kill the tree entirely, thereby presenting a significant challenge for homeowners. Furthermore, the repeated flushing of crystalline rock salt can elevate the likelihood of corrosion in sewer pipes, thereby exacerbating the issue.

Does salt affect pH in soil?

Does salt affect pH in soil?

Salt affects pH measurement in soil, as it affects the concentration of salt in the soil water mixture. The pH values measured will also vary due to the salt concentration varying in the soil by year and season. A better way to measure pH is by using calcium chloride as a standard salt, which is slightly greater than the amount found in Georgia soils when they are at their saltiest level after fertilizer application and organic matter decomposition in late spring.

A stable pH measurement is important for most Georgia crops, as lime is recommended only when soil pH is less than 6. 0. In a heavy winter, salts may be at a very low concentration, and soil samples collected may read pH 6. 1. In a dry winter, more salts may be present, and the pH might read 5. 8, and lime would be recommended. By measuring pH in a salt solution, the salt content when measuring pH would be very close to the same from year to year, resulting in more stable soil pH readings between years and during the year. A more stable seasonal pH measurement will result in lime being recommended when needed, avoiding situations where lime is not recommended but should be.

How many types of salt affected soil?

The Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) has identified three categories of salt-affected soils for management purposes: saline soils, sodic soils, and saline-sodic soils. These categories are defined in soil classification literature and are used for soil surveys. Saline soils must have electrical conductivity above 4 dS/m. However, the classification has limitations for management decisions, as many crops are adversely affected at soluble salt values below the NRCS saline soil threshold.

How does salinity affect soil structure?

The impact of salt on soil is contingent upon the specific type of salt present, with highly saline soils often becoming highly sodic. The presence of sodium and magnesium ions in soil can result in the destruction of soil structure, whereas the application of calcium carbonate has been observed to enhance soil structure and elevate soil pH.

What is the harmful effect of soil salinity?

High soil salt levels can lead to plant dehydration, leading to yield decline or even death. Crop yield losses may not be immediately apparent, as the crop’s salt tolerance depends on its ability to extract water from salinized soils. Salinity affects crop production by interfering with nitrogen uptake, reducing growth, and stopping plant reproduction. Toxic ions, particularly chloride, can poison plants, causing poisoning and death as the concentration increases.

Is salt alkaline or acidic?

Sodium chloride (NaCl), a neutral compound with a pH of 7, is formed from a strong acid, hydrochloric acid (HCl), and a strong base, sodium hydroxide (NaOH). It possesses both acidic and basic properties, rendering it neither acidic nor basic.

Is salty soil acidic or alkaline?

Alkali soils are those with enough sodium to occupy 15% of cation exchange sites, preventing clay and humus particles from forming large aggregates. These soils typically have a pH of 8. 5 or higher and are classified as salt-affected. Some Oklahoma soils become dispersed when the exchangeable sodium is as low as 7 percent, while productive agricultural soils often have less than 1 percent exchangeable sodium.

Saline soils are typically found in small, growing areas of a field, often in low-lying areas with poor internal soil drainage or on slopes exposed by erosion. These areas are often cultivated when the soil is too wet, leading to soil compacting and more water evaporating, leaving salts in the soil. As a result, the affected area grows larger over time.

Does salt make soil fertile?

The growth of crops on saline soils is typically impeded due to the reduction in water uptake by plant roots. The presence of elevated concentrations of salts in the soil can have a detrimental impact on plant growth, as it can lead to a reduction in water uptake. The tolerance of plants to high salt concentrations varies considerably. Examples of plants that demonstrate greater tolerance to saline conditions include:

How does salt affect the soil?

Salinity negatively impacts plant growth by accumulating salts in the root zone, which hinders plant roots from withdrawing water from the surrounding soil. This lowers the amount of water available to the plant, regardless of the actual amount in the root zone. Plants exert more energy extracting water from the soil, which can cause stress. Soil water salinity is dependent on soil type, climate, water use, and irrigation routines. After irrigating the soil, plant available water is at its highest and soil water salinity is at its lowest.

As plants use soil water, the remaining water becomes tighter to the soil, making it more difficult for them to obtain. This can be further increased by evapotranspiration (ET) between irrigation periods.

Soil water salinity can affect soil physical properties by causing fine particles to bind together into aggregates, known as flocculation. This process is beneficial for soil aeration, root penetration, and root growth. However, high levels of salinity can have negative and potentially lethal effects on plants. Therefore, increasing salinity to maintain soil structure without considering potential impacts on plant health is essential.

  • STACY, My Mother had a home health Nurse who told me years ago to use a pinch of Himalayan salt in my water bottle. Many many times I hear some of Stacy’s advice and I think, Moms nurse always said that! I believe she kept my mom more healthy than any of her drs or medications! Thank you Stacy your a smart lady!

  • I just saw this post last week. So, I started taking it on Wednesday, this is Sunday. I’ve noticed my skin is softer, I seem to be detoxing, my tummy went down a couple of inches and I’ve lost the couple of pounds that were sneaking up on me. I had never heard of this, but am so happy to have found it. Thanks for sharing.

  • Spot on with the neuro effects of dehydration. After I had a procedure on a brain tumor I was a wreck & started having seizures. Cleaned up my diet, removed toxins from the home, weened myself off all the meds & the only time I get seizures now is if I’m dehydrated. Had just heard about this water but didn’t know what it was until now. Thank you!

  • Great information. Thank you. I will tell you something else very important. Electrically charge your water by shaking it vigorously for 30s or more. This adds oxygen plus also breaks up water memory and structure. Water uses hydrogen bonding to form structures. Think of how different snow flakes are. You don’t want this. By shaking the water you break up these temporary bonds and make the water more electrically available to your body. You will know this is working because you will be able to drink large amounts of water without peeing it out quickly. Your body will retain and use it longer. Hope this helps.

  • I add pink salt and cream of tartar (and a lemon slice or a little lemon juice) to my water. The cream of tartar has potassium in it. I also take magnesium capsules daily. Together, these electrolytes satisfy my thirst and I no longer notice heart palpitations. The potassium makes a huge difference for me.

  • I’ve been meaning to do this! Well, after perusal the article last night I put the salt in the water and let it sit overnight. This morning after coming in from feeding chickens and watering chickens and cows, I added it to my husband’s water, my kids water and my water! This will be a daily added benefit to our already pretty healthy organic life we live! Thank you!

  • I’ve been doing this for 3 days since you posted it. Adding organic lemon to it. I set my timer for 1 hour and then have my coffee.sweetened with Manuka honey and MTC oil. Wow is all I know to say! Game changer for me! Sooo…energized and not hungry! Best tip you ever shared I’m also happy! 😊 Thanks, guys!

  • Love this! I have done this every morning for a few years now! I have 16 oz of spring water, 1 tsp of SOLE and a TBSP of organic lemon juice- room temp – starts digestion!!! Also, you are never supposed to touch METAL to it – so don’t use a stainless spoon, use plastic. Touching metal removes the positive electric charge that you want in the drink.

  • Redmond salt is amazing! I saw 1st hand results. We have a farm that our nephews farm. They used Redmond when they planted their corn last spring, and it was the best corn we’ve had in 40 years. it was gorgeous dark green, the darkest green we’ve ever seen and the biggest ears you’ve ever seen!!! Redmond salt is wonderful!! Can you imagine what it can do for our body? Praise God, all we need He created! 🙌

  • I hadn’t heard of sole water before. I made some up tonight to use tomorrow morning. I’ve gotten so many good ideas and recipes from both of you. I made the sweet potato flatbread. Delicious! Now I’m starting to ferment. They aren’t ready yet, but I did the carrots, onions & garlic and also red cabbage with apples. Can’t wait to try them. Thanks for being so helpful.❤

  • I just love you both! So hilarious. Your article’s are a hit in our house. I’m always looking for them in my notification box. If there’s a day you don’t post, it’s like a morning without my coffee. I’m not happy. So please keep doing what you’re doing. I can see your passionate about helping others. And we sure do appreciate everything you do and share all for the betterment of your fellow American’s and non Americans alike. God bless you both. Love you both. 🙏🏻🇺🇸❤️

  • This is also very beneficial for adrenal function. Which in turn supports thyroid function. When I was having high-cortisol-at-night issues (supposed to be high in the morning, low at night), a little salt water in the morning helped to shift peak cortisol production back to morning away from evening and pretty much cured my insomnia.

  • I am definitely trying this. I use Redmonds daily and have a 10 bag to be delivered tomorrow! I need help with fatigue, poor hair health and dehydration! Going to mix some up for tomorrow! I’m doing a 24 hour fast tomorrow, starting mid-morning, so I will have before I get started! Thank you for the awesome info! Stay blessed y’all! ❤

  • Thank you for this info Doug and Stacey. A couple years ago a doctor told me I was dehydrated and no salt. However, I was drinking so much water like 8 quarts a day at least, and using plain salt too. So I started learning that my water was empty, reverse osmosis, which strips everything out and by drinking so much water I was flushing nutrients ect out of me. So I started drinking water with lemon and switched my salt to Redmonds which I also added in my quart jars and only about 8-10 cups a day. I drink it throughout the day though Much much better now.

  • i never heard it called a name, my hubs does this just to make sure his minerals are balanced, cool to hear its called a thing. the best water in the world has tons of minerals naturally in there so this sounds like a great way to improve our water without spending $50 a bottle for naturally occurring mineralized waters. thanks for sharing your tips. always a pleasure learning from you guys.

  • I’ve been drinking Soleil in my water for 17 years now, ever since I moved to Hawai’i and I collect rain water. Rain water is thirty water with no minerals. I put a Tb in my daily filtered rain gallon of water and drink that throughout the day. It’s basically re-mineralizing it and energizing it. Rain water doesn’t run through rock and nature etc. I do other things to my water to revitalize it and restructure it but adding Soleil is a must..

  • Stacy, I mentioned to my mom that I wrote to you about strangers coming up to me and telling me I have beautiful hair and they are growing theirs out. Yesterday we were sitting in a waiting room and a woman appeared out of a hallway and came over to me to tell me how beautiful my hair looks. I looked at my mom and smiled. It is worth the wait, Stacy. ❤

  • Never heard of Sole before, but it sounds like something my father used to make .A salt water drink, for him and my Grandfather during the summer, he said it helped you from becoming dehydated when working all day in the sun. He would also get salt tablets and use them in water . We used to use salt tablets in water when we were haying it . Your article just made me remember this . TY <3

  • First day doing this and I feel amazing!! I can’t thank you enough for this incredible info!! Ohemgee!! I had so much energy today playing with my grandkids and feel so much happiness in my brain and I suffer from depression! This is probably what my brain needed all along!! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!! Love you guys!! Keep up the good work!! Keep the amazing health articles coming!! I am doing so much better from perusal your articles and following your recommendations!!

  • Doug and Stacy, I switched to Celtic salt(from reg. sea salt) about 9-10 months ago which has 82 minerals in it-it’s a hand harvested sea salt with 3 magnesiums which helps the water get into your cells …well here’s a article about this salt by Barbara O’Neil: youtube.com/watch?v=cBuK73K7t_0. Celtic salt is great! I don’t have the swelling around my ankles that was happening.Love what you guys do. ~Peace~

  • I was in an Asian floral shop in San Francisco 14 years ago and she sold large pink salt rocks to make sole water. I used it for a long time. You mentioned this recently and I am grateful for the reminder! I have been adding pinches of Redmond salt to my water bottle but this method is easier. I want to share with you too, I was having crystal vision like an ocular migraine beginning today. I was unsure what to do as I had been drinking lemon water and coconut water. I went into my bag and had 2 crystals of himalayan pink salt and after a few minutes it was gone. I was savoring the salty flavor so I knew my body needed minerals from the discussion you had a couple weeks back. THANK YOU!!!🙏💜 It was the quickest I have ever gotten rid of crystal vision and no migraine or headache!

  • I love this and can’t believe I didn’t think of making the concentrated solution ahead of time. I look forward to being much more consistent with this. I had already started adding lemon juice to water first thing in the morning. My grandmother swore by this when I was a young girl but I had let myself get distracted as a teen and gotten out of the habit. I’ve always been a water drinker but I really look forward to the benefits of this routine now that I’m an old lady. By the way Stacy, your hair is beautiful! For years I envied my younger brother’s hair turning a beautiful silver by the time he was 40. I just went mousey brown until I hit 65 and finally I have hair that is gray/silver enough that I am no longer tempted to color my hair.

  • Thanks for sharing this Doug! I just started drinking the glass of warm well water with 1/4 teaspoon Redmond salt and some lemon first thing in the morning like Stacy does. It’s great! I thought it would taste sour or salty and it doesn’t. It’s a very satisfying drink like you said. I like your rhyme Doug. I’ve been doing this since Stacy talked about it recently. I have not heard of the Sole before this.

  • I have my redmond salt already because of YOU😍 and will start this right away! I have never heard about Sole’ water but I needed some prompting on using it regularly and I am excited to know how much more beneficial this is than when you taught me the first time I saw one of your articles on it. Thank you for caring SOOO Much about our health ❤️🤩💪🙌

  • I know you have to add in the verbage about consulting with your doctor, but it is so frustrating when I actually do ask for opinion or share with my doctor I’m adding anything natural or holistic, etc. into my regular health regime they always poo poo the idea away and say it’s a waste of time, money and effort and act like I’m ridiculous for even considering it. Or I just get some general negative reaction. It’s sad to me that so many of todays physician’s have so little knowledge or respect for the history of medicine and worse couldn’t care less to learn about anything not sold by big pharma. Did I mention frustrating?

  • Some time ago, I learned from David Avocado Wolfe to take a couple of shakes of salt in some warm water first thing upon waking to not only hydrate you, but it also helps detoxify, helps with allergies if you drink it when having an issue with allergies, helps with headaches if you drink it when you have a headache, and more! Works like a charm.

  • This is Mar 3rd, ’23 and I began drinking this water the next morning putting a tsp in a pint of cold well water to drink before anything else. Doug, how is your Eema doing? She must be so happy in her beautiful, family built log home! You are a grand example of how a son(s) ought to care for their Eema(‘s). Blessings and Shalom to you all. Brook, Opy and Asa

  • Yas! I’m quite familiar!!! I was consistently using Sole’ ! I loved that it made that daily morning phlegm disappear! I made mine using pink Himalayan Salt. Yes first thing upon awakening! Loved the energy alertness! I’m back on it! You don’t have to tell me twice! Yep 1 tsp in 12oz. Of water for me!

  • Thank you for bringing wonderful homesteading ideas to me and everyone. You’re helping give me a hand up in my quest to be more self sustaining means a lot to me. I have been using Redmond real salt for a few years. I have sole’ in a squirt bottle to drop a couple drops in my nose before a shower. By the time i am out of the steamy shower my nose is clear. I love recommending this Real Salt to my family and friends. My practitioner recommended it to me because this helps with mineral absorption.

  • I have to tell you I began this as an experiment this week. Day 2 I realized as you said… my energy didn’t go down towards the end of the day. I kept it going realized I wasn’t having my sweet cravings mid day, when usually I will grab a glass of wine while Cooking dinner. But the biggest difference I’ve noticed is I have been having an absolutely terrible time with menopause symptoms now for about 14 months. I have tried expensive vitamins, teas and natural remedies. Nothing touched it. I do lot want to go on medication, I currently take no medication. And yesterday I noticed a sharp drop in my Hot flashes… today I may have had 2. I have suffered this morning noon and night for over a year. It’s awful. Just rolling waves of heat up my back and face about every half hour if not more. Interrupts my sleep. Anyway- It’s virtually disappeared! I know people say nutrition ans vitamins. But I’m telling ya there’s definitely something to your magic salt water. Lol

  • I have never heard of soleil to be honest but I do know in Thailand they serve the fresh fruit shakes with a pinch of salt to heighten the flavour of the fruit & replace minerals lost from perspiration. Personally I like the salinity of coconut water that I drink so I might just try this method out, thanks guys! ❤

  • Thank you so much. Love you guys. I just started Dr.Berg’s electrolyte powder because I have a potassium deficiency. It has the salts and minerals plus the high potassium content. I agree with you guys to have some salt and mineral added nutrients to better hydrate your body. The sole water is excellent too. Hope this article helps folks.

  • Hi Doug and Stacy,. I emailed Redmond Salt and let them know about my vision improvement and here is their reply: “Thanks for sharing this information (Newmyr), we love to receive positive feedback regarding any of our products. Although we are unable to make any medical claims, we want you to know that you are not the first person to share that their vision was improved after including Real Salt in their diet:)” Customer Service Redmond Life

  • So my doctor told me years ago to add a pinch of Celtic salt to every glass of water I drink. She also told le to drink it through a copper straw :). Sole water is especially great for those who intermittent fast. Also. if you have been drinking, drink some before bed to prevent hangover ;). Thanks for another educational article 🙂 ❤

  • I been having trouble sleeping, because i feel the need to pee 3 or 4 times a night. So i thought to try this to see. It’s been a week now. And i have seen a decrease in peeing at night. And last night, i did not wake up until morning. And the best part my prostate feels smaller than before and i can pee easier. Feeling much better! Thank you Doug and Stacy….

  • I just got started on this.. I put 1/4 cup of Redmond Real Salt (it is mind in Utah) into a glass (pickle) jar with plastic lid (not metal) and filtered water. I’m letting it sit for 12-24 hours After that I will check my jar to see if I see salt settled on the bottom. Salt on the bottom of jar means the water absorbed plenty of salt No salt means I need to add a little more. When it is ready I plan on using 1 teaspoon in a glass of 8-12 oz of water first thing in the morning and again later in the day if needed.. Hope this helps with my cramps and energy

  • Doug and Stacey, I watch a lot of your articles. I found a lot of the information helpful. I recently ran into an issue. I began to have swelling in my ankles and feet. I started resting my legs and propping up my feet to get the swelling to go away. It wouldn’t clear up. I thought it was strange. I said to myself what’s going on, this is the first time that happened to me. 😓

  • I drank this last night. This is the first time in months that I did not have to get up and go to the bathroom. All I can guess is that before this, the water I drank was not totally absorbed by my body. This seemed to get totally absorbed. I will see what happens tonight. If I remember, I will let you know how it goes.———- It has been many days now and I get up around 2 times a night now. I feel more hydrated but I started taking Willard Water at the same time that I started the salt brine.

  • Thank you. Sometimes in the a.m. when feeling light headed/faint I would have some water & salty pretzels to raise my low blood pressure & it helped. Realized to do such after perusal how miners buried under ground were rescued bringing them individually up in a rescue constructed elevator “after they had some saline water”. Because they had to stand up in the small elevator if any felt faint had no place to fall they first raised their blood pressure. Recently, prior to cataract surgery when I told the Anesthesiologist of what I learned to do for self, he told me that normally he does not, but for me put me on an IV with fluids prior to surgery. It is so important to be hydrated! Stacey, thank you. I now look forward to drinking Sole water to start off my day! I know I need to watch out not to become dehydrated!

  • This is Paul and Angela from Jonesborough Tennessee why thank you for your articles it is it has helps as change our lifestyle saving up to buy all your Health books and cookbooks and fermenting we have been fermenting a little bit starting our Homestead got some raised beds in the garden and just build a small Greenhouse

  • I’ve heard of this before, but it wasn’t explained well and I got the impression that they were drinking very salty water. I appreciate you guys breaking it down! Most of us are suffering from mineral deficiency on some level, so things like this are handy for helping to correct it. I’ve whipped up a batch, just letting it sit and am excited to try it tomorrow! My partner also works a very physical job so I hope this will be beneficial for them.

  • For some reason, you posts aren’t showing up in recent articles. The last one I got was from 8 days ago. I got a notification that you posted a new one (because im subscribed) but it says the article is private and I cannot watch it and its not showing on the web browser page. It only showed on my phone notifications. Its not here 🙁 I hope nobody else is having these issues. Doug, can you check your settings? I don’t want to miss articles! I love your articles!

  • I learned a Hawaiian salt ritual from one of my Hawaiian Kumus… we made that same salt drink and did some prayers carried it with us everywhere. Stood up outside and shook it in the 6 directions twice during the day. Then if we woke up that night from sleep… whatever time we woke up at night was the time during the day to take a sip of the salt water. Of course after shaking it in the 6 directions. This salt water was also used by another Hawaiian teacher of mine for helping stomach issues… it involved stomach bandage wrapping. And the technique was called opu Huli.
