Light in Minecraft affects visibility, mob spawning, and plant growth. There are three aspects of Minecraft’s lighting system: light level, internal light level, and rendered. Sunlight offers the highest light level of 15, which promotes optimal growth for plants. However, torches, glowstone, and other light sources with lower levels have lower light levels.

Crops should be in a light level of 9 or higher, at least during day time, to achieve ideal growing conditions. Growing crops underground is not necessary, as they do need some light, but where this light comes from is irrelevant. You can build a farm way underground and use lava as a light source if you want.

Growth requires a light level of at least 9 in the block above the plant. The growth probability is 1/(floor(25/points) + 1), where “points” are as follows: the farmland block the crop is planted on gives 2 points if dry or 4 if hydrated. Most “regular” crops like pumpkin, wheat, potato, and carrot require a light level of 9 or higher to grow at a normal speed.

The closer to the water it is, the faster it will grow. The highest light level is 15 produced by sunlight, fire, pumpkins, and lightstone. At night or below a certain light level, but not at complete darkness, they will not grow.

In Minecraft Bedrock, different colored lights can effect and increase plant growth. Red light can affect overworlds plant growth, while crops can now be planted in any light level, even 0, without block updates causing them to break. This ruins several designs for crop farms.

  • hmm, I may be wrong, but the way the spawning algorithm works is it looks for a place to spawn a mob (1 block under 1 air block I think), then looks around that air block for a place to spawn the mob. so putting the glowstone there could increase the mob spawning rate just because the glowstone was ground, and had air above it. but that might not apply to transparent blocks. I’m not sure.

  • Great article Xisuma, keep it up. Here’s one I don’t think you’ve covered: Do you activate mob spawners if you go past their detection range in a minecart? For example if you have 2 spawners that are just a bit too far apart to afk at is going afk in a mine cart that travels between them going to be a solution?

  • Nope. What affects speed aside from speed effects is whether you are running or jumping. Since you speed up slightly by jumping, making the jumps as small as possible means you get more jumps and go faster. So people put trapdoors on ice in a 2 block high to go as fast as running with speed 3 or 4 (after that, the speed effect is greater than the jump effect so you go faster running than jumping at all).

  • Ive asked this one to be done before, but what will unbreaking help block on all tools/weapons? (i.e. unbreaking may work on mob hits with a sword, but not with a shovel, or it might proc breaking leaves with a sword (which takes away 2 durability) but only take away 1 durability – or maybe a 25% chance to take away 0)

  • @xisumavoid, I have a hypothesis: Could it be that light levels are only indirectly affecting rates by increasing the light level of nearby air blocks? Since the code governing mob spawning is based on air blocks, then increasing the light level of any air block “near” a spawner or trap should lower the spawn rate. I do not know at what point in the process that light levels are checking but it would appear this happens late (thus wasting cycles) and this would be consistent with lower rates.

  • It didn’t seem like you looked in the code this time (and the numbers speak volumes without snooping), so while I haven’t done so either, I have a theory. When testing for a spawnable space, the game checks several blocks and only if they all pass does it spawn. Obviously, light-level would be a part of the checks so if the game looked closer to the light, it would fail and a mob would not spawn, but without light in that spot it would continue on. Does this sound like a plausible reason?

  • Not sure if this would be considered a myth or not, but, although it’s known librarian villagers can get a gold trade, I’ve traded with heaps of them in an organized, proper way and never saw it appear, neither have I seen it on anyone else’s articles. Could you perhaps confirm or disprove this Xisuma?
