Altrelopathy is a biological phenomenon where one plant inhibits the growth of another through allelochemicals. Some plants, such as pine trees, contain compounds that inhibit the growth of other plants. These compounds tend not to have other species of plants growing under them, and pine needles have an inhibitory effect on the germination of other seeds. The notion that pine needles change the soil pH so that nothing will grow or that it will damage plants has been around for years. Pine needle water and soil hydrolysate extracts were most inhibitory to the radicle growth of the test species. The results indicate that these extracts had inhibitory effects on germination and growth in grass plants depending on the seed type and applied concentrations.

So I moved to the panhandle and got 40 acres. I have about 15 acres of big pines spread out pretty far from each other. The area was choked with hollies that I had forestry mulched. Had a guy come over to give advice on making my place pasture. Your impression was dead on of this guy and his assessment of the pines. Will it hurt to run over them with the mower and then get the access up or need to get them up with the rake. I’m trying to find an easier way to clean my yard up.
