Orchids, like many other plants, bloom for a while and then enter into a resting period. When the stem turns yellow, the flowers droop, wilt, and eventually fall off. Orchids bloom again after the flowers fall, leaving bare spikes in their place. To make the plant bloom again faster, cut off the old flower spike.
After the last flowers fall off, it is important to wait until the flowers have dropped off. If the orchid is not growing a new flower spike after 1 to 2 months, feed it with a bloom booster fertilizer. Orchids do continue their growth after the flowers fall off, as the growth phase follows the orchid’s resting phase.
There are three main options to get your Phalaenopsis to flower again: let it be, cut the spike, or let it grow again. A typical orchid plant can bloom again and again as long as it has healthy flower spikes to bear it. It is normal for orchids to do so before entering a resting period, allowing them to store energy for their eventual reblooming.
A happy, healthy orchid will usually rebloom every 8 to 12 months, but some will flower again in the same season. If the orchid doesn’t rebloom from the existing spikes, they will fall off on their own. Orchids will grow new stems as they come out of their dormant period, getting ready to bloom again. It may take a while for new stems to appear.
To cut back the flower spike, cut it just above a node (the small bump on the stem) once the flowers have fallen off the plant. Even if its flowers are gone, these plants can bounce back, given the right light, warmth, and care.
