Do Orchids Need To Be Deadheaded?

Deadheading orchids is not necessary for every orchid variety, but it is primarily recommended for those that produce multiple blooms or have large blooms. Orchids that produce single or small blooms can be left untouched, as deadheading them can inhibit their growth. To prune an orchid, use clean, sharp scissors or pruning shears to cut off the faded flowers at the base of the stem. Sterilize your tools before and after use to prevent the spread of germs.

Deadheading is the practice of removing spent flowers from plants. If the faded blooms don’t fall by themselves, pick them off to keep the plant looking its best. After all the flowers on a stem have fallen, cut it off just above a healthy node (joint) lower down the stem to encourage a new flowering side-shoot to sprout from that node. If the flower spike is drooping and discolored, and its edges have turned brownish, it is time to remove the flower.

Orchids are grown for their flowers, so it’s essential that they’re deadheaded correctly to encourage more flowers. Moth orchids flower multiple, and any parts that have turned yellow are totally dead. Deadheading encourages new blooms or growth and generally makes the plant look better. Some flowers consist of a bunch of seeds, which, if you prune them, can be removed.

The best way to cut orchid plants when they are young is to trim the stalk all the way back to 1 inch (2.5 cm.) from the base of the plant. If you’re not sure whether to deadhead or let the plant do its thing, follow these guidelines for pruning an orchid.
