What’s so special about orchids?

Botanists generally agree that the orchid is unique due to its unique feature of fusion of the male and female parts of the flower into a single structure called the column. This structure is often visible protruding from the center. Other features of an orchid include the sepal, which protects the petals, the pollini, a solid mass of pollen found in the anther column, the petals, the lip (or Labellum), the ovary, a small protuberance in the ovary capable of forming a seed when fertilized, and the stigma, the sticky area of the pistil that receives the pollen. These features are found on over 7, 000 orchids in The Orchid Show: Cuba in Flower.

What are the rules for orchids?

Orchid care involves watering your orchid once a week, avoiding overwatering to prevent root rot. Position your orchid in a bright windowsill facing east or west, feed it weekly with a fertilizer specifically designed for orchids, and repot it when it stops blooming. Orchids are the largest and most diverse flowering plant family, with over 880 genera and 22, 000 species. Most orchids are tropical plants, living as epiphytes or “air plants” hanging on trees, while some are lithophytes or “rock plants” growing on or among rocks.

Terrestrial orchids grow in the loamy detritus of the jungle floor. Despite the diverse nature of orchid care, only a few dozen species are widely produced and available at local nursery. Hybrid orchids, created by crossing different species and genera, are rewarding house plants that are relatively easy to care for if understood their basic needs.

  • I just recently received a non blooming phrag orchid & placed it in the new orchid pot by lechuza with their special orchid substrate. I haven’t had much luck with this type of orchid in the past & am hopeful this system will work for me. Have u tried this product or any of your viewers? Just curious what they think. I have to stop myself from constantly checking on the plant. The pot is beautiful but the substrate is definitely something I am unfamiliar with. I grow in leca, sphagnum, & in baskets with no media etc. I live in SW Florida so my climate is warm to hot with high humidity & good air movement.

  • I’d maybe stress the variation from climate here. In contrast: Unless we get a super-summer, a miltoniopsis will probably be OK with just sitting on windowsill. You almost need to not water dendrobiums during winter — they will rot during winter with too much moisture. (Overall, it’s much easier to over- than under-water orchids here.)

  • Well for my birthday I went to my IKEA and purchased two mini phalaenopsis orchids. No name of coarse. I thought they was in decorated pot only but today I saw they was in a small clear pot. I want to combine them together and want to get them use to bark. They are currently in moss. Any suggestions are welcomed.
