Bright, nectar-rich flowers like New York, New England, and smooth asters are essential for butterfly food. Adults feed on nectar and can be seen nectaring on flat, daisy-like blooms or plants with long, tubular flowers. For a more active, healthy garden, plant flowers that attract butterflies.

Sunflowers are popular among butterflies due to their huge flowers, bright colors, and abundance of nectar. Shasta daisy is a classic cottage garden staple and nectar source for many butterfly species, including painted lady and cabbage. Sweet, sunny Coreopsis are easy-to-grow members of the Sunflower family whose blooms attract bees and butterflies, and whose seed heads attract butterflies.

Some great plants for attracting butterflies include zinnias, coneflowers, Mexican sunflowers/tithonia, daisies, and goldenrod. Members of the aster, mint, rose, milkweed, and vervain families are pollinator favorites because they offer flower heads where butterflies can lay eggs.

To attract butterflies to your garden, consider planting milkweed, butterfly weed, passionflower, and bright white Daffodils. These plants will lure butterflies to stay longer in your garden and make it a bee-friendly place.

Butterflies are cold-blooded insects that require sunlight to warm their muscles for flight. They thrive on plants that need full direct sunlight, which requires at least 8 hours of sunlight for proper blooming and providing nectar. Butterfly gardening appeals to both children and adults due to their beauty. To attract butterflies, you need sunlight, a nectar source, and a host plant for their caterpillars. Whether you live in a city with a balcony or a home with some land, these three elements are essential for their happiness.

Nectar sources don’t have to come from flowers; you can also attract butterflies by slicing up an apple, orange, or banana and placing them on a plate in the sun. Butterflies will find the nectar source, and they will investigate. Do butterflies smell flowers?

Adult butterflies sense smells through their antennae, which are densely covered with chemoreceptors, especially on the clubs. In monarchs, chemoreceptors on the antennae sense the odor associated with nectar and feeding, as well as special chemicals released by the male, called pheromones. Pheromones help males and females of the same species find each other to mate. Monarch males can produce pheromones, which they secrete through special glands on the wings. However, monarchs do not require pheromones for successful mating.

Female butterflies often have important chemoreceptors on their legs to help them find appropriate host plants for their eggs. These chemoreceptors are at the base of spines on the back of the legs and run up along the spine to its tip. Monarch females test host plants with all six legs before laying eggs, and possibly have chemoreceptors on their ovipositor.

  • Alice actually has a lot of nice moments in this film. There are so many moments where she is being nice. She was also likable to begin with at the start of the film when she made Dinah a crown of flowers. That was a very sweet and special gift that Alice made for her cute little cat. Very, very thoughtful of her. Her “In A World Of My Own” song proves that she’s nice too, especially when she calls the bluebird nice and dips her finger into the water and that lovely dinging sound can be heard 😍

  • I don’t know why, but this song just came to mind while I was in the middle of work, out of nowehere, that when I had brief free time, I stopped everything to find this article. I haven’t heard this song in about two decades, and still, it rouses that child-like, whimsical spirit within me. BTW, I can totally relate to the Lazy Daisy.

  • The fact that Alice sings like a normal little girl and not like a professional singer improves the scene in several ways, IMHO. First, it makes her more relatable, as most people, children or otherwise, would have difficulty hitting some of the higher notes. Second, it’s a good contrast to the flowers’ more pro-level music. Third, it sets the stage for the flowers turning on her, as it shows she’s “not in tune” with them.

  • My favourite as a little kid, oh my I’m only now realising how much this classic moulded my life aha. I fell in love with books because straight after perusal this I listened to the audio tape (Yes TAPE) in the car almost everyday driving my mum up the wall and now I’m going to study a masters in English. Wow. Crazy

  • Those who are extremely familiar with Lewis Carroll would know that this movie despite its name is actually a telling of the books Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and (Alice) Through the Looking Glass merged and that the scene with the garden of live flowers is based on the book (Alice) Through the Looking Glass.
