The best time to water your lawn in summer is between 4 and 8 a.m., as these hours allow water to seep deep into the soil. Properly watering your lawn during the summer is different when it’s newly installed sod from watering an established lawn. For the first nine days (including the day of installation), you should water your lawn. A typical lawn needs about an inch of water per week, equating to two 30-minute watering sessions.
To ensure proper watering, sprinkle new seeds with a light mist of water once a day (ideally twice) until they sprout. A hard spray or big droplets of water will wash away or make them clump together. Don’t irrigate during the hottest hours or in the evening. The ideal time is early in the morning, as water evaporates within a short time, so even if you think the grass has been sufficiently soaked, it doesn’t actually benefit much.
In general, lawns in summer need about ½” of water every 3 days or so. If it’s a little cooler where you are, then you should use a hose-end sprinkler. Use a timer to help you remember to turn it off. With in-ground lawns, it’s recommended to water it at least 2-3 times a week. Watering early in the morning or late in the evening is best to minimize water evaporation.
For small circular areas, a rotary sprinkler’s round watering pattern is perfect. Long, narrow spaces are easiest to water. The best time to water grass is early in the morning, between 6 am and 10 am, as the cooler air and calmer breezes allow water droplets to reach the grass.

You need to water more than for an hour to get even close to 25 mm, I have a sprinkler just like yours and i takes me around 2,5 hours, if not even more to water that amount. I just use a “rängnmätare” (rain gauge) to measure it, I just place it under the sprinkler, its very easy and requires no kinds of calculations and also makes sure I always water the amount that is correct.
Another great article Sam, I to have been using the same products as you, and really noticed the difference in my lawn, which I only water for 15 minutes twice per week. Had some signs of stress before applying those products but has all but gone now. All be it my lawn is only 30sq metres. I alternate between an impact sprinkler and the same as you use. Nice article.. couple of question 1. How did you measure 11mm if you are not measure guy, i mean how do you measure rain fall in a day/week, so you can know how much you need to run sprinkler in the rest of the week? 2. I wouldnt say you are an average lawn owner if most of your neigbhours lawns are dormant,right ;)? I think you know exactly what are you doing and when are you doing. You know that watering depends on many things, like if the lawn is on the full sun every day or in shadow, area where you live, what type of grass you had, moving height in the summer, fertilize for summer etc. Its not just that you put an inch of water and step on the lawn to check it and thats it. Its much more work then that,dont get me wrong maybe someone when try this will be discouraged if not succeded, you should mention all those things that are connected with the amount of the water that you need put it on lawn.
