Choosing The Right Soil For Repotting Orchids?

To repot an orchid, you need to select the right orchid soil and use it to ensure your plants reach their full potential. To do this, you will need containers, potting medium, scissors or pruners, gloves for protection, and water.

When repotting, make sure to use fresh potting material, such as sphagnum moss mixed with other orchid potting mediums, for its water-holding qualities and as a top layer for mediums that tend to dry out too fast. You will also need a new pot, a potting mix, and sterilize your pot the day before to prevent fungal, bacterial, and pest infections.

It is best to use a potting medium designed specifically for epiphytes like fir bark, sphagnum moss, peat moss, lava rocks, perlite, charcoal, clay pebbles, tree ferns, coconut fiber, and more. Orchids prefer potting mediums such as bark, peat moss, or a specially designed orchid potting mix. Place your orchid in a pot 1-2″ larger in diameter than its original pot, and then add in new orchid potting mix.

Orchids are not potted in regular indoor potting soil but instead an orchid-specific porous mix that can include sphagnum moss, fir bark, coconut husk, and tree fern fibers. Most growers use a fine orchid bark mix with 20 sponge-rock or perlite added. Sand, coarse peat, redwood bark, or shavings may be added to the mix.

Bark mixes are best for repotting orchids, which can contain charcoal, sponge rock, and Monterey pine bark or fir bark. A premium orchid potting mix sold by rePotme is recommended, which is composed of 98 Monterey pine bark, 1 horticulture charcoal, and 1 perlite.

To repot your orchid, you can use plastic or terracotta (clay) as a suitable potting medium. Clay lasts for many years and can be used over and over, making it a long-lasting and durable option.
