Can Raw Daisies Be Consumed?

Daisies, a common and recognisable wild edible plant in the UK, are a symbol of spring and can be eaten raw in salads, on bread, or as a tea. The flowers can be pickled like capers, and daisy tea eases coughs, while the ointment helps with skin problems. However, it is important to exercise caution and consume daisies in moderation.

Daisies belong to the Asteraceae family, which includes plants that are resistant to most pests and diseases. They are robust and can be crushed between fingers to get a pineapple-like aroma or an olfactory similarity to chamomile, to which wild chamomile is related. The young flower heads or buds can be added to salads, soups, or sandwiches, or used to decorate salad dishes. The leaves can be eaten raw despite their bitter aftertaste, but are better mixed in salads or cooked and might be used as a potherb.

English and other daisies can be eaten raw or used as vegetables. The entire plant can be eaten raw, with larger flowers making a great garnish. The leaves can be eaten raw or cooked, but make sure they are clean. The flower buds, petals, and leaves are edible raw and can be made into a tea. They are great for salads, and the frilly leaves are pretty and edible too.

The bright yellow or white flowers and small leaves of edible daisies are slightly spicy and have a bitter, almost nutty taste. It is essential to use only authentic resources and avoid consuming safe to eat daisies from polluted areas or those sprayed with insecticides or herbicides.

  • Hey Hazy, love your articles! I’m a clinical psychologist from the states (Minnesota). We are seeing increases in mental concerns right now. I think you’re spot on. It’s getting harder as time passes and shelter in place orders are extended. Thank you for your (continued) willingness to share. You’re reducing stigma, and encouraging us to remember to engage with our values while experiencing some pretty uncomfortable emotions. Keep it up!

  • In the midwest we’ve had unseasonably warm temps lately. Yesterday I saw dandelions all over. I made some tea with the flowers for the first time. It was pleasant and I also got a mental boost from getting outside and consuming what I found. Rather than waste the flowers I gave one a try. Boiled the tasted like collard green or spinach. So, I did what I do when I have greens and added Tabasco. They were fantastic. It was a good day.

  • Man, I’m sad that I’ve come to this website so late, after all of these cool things have come and gone. I’m really feeling this because I went through cancer this year and I’m only 36. It was stage 3 ampullary adenocarcinoma, not testicular though. So they did a Whipple’s and pulled out what feels like 1/4 of my guts, frankensteined me back together and here I am: on my last cycle of chemo, hiking, fishing, camping and looking forward to a future! Cheers mate, thanks for helping do the work!

  • It’s tough mate. I’ve lost myself, found myself then lost myself several times over the past 2 months. It’s especially bad as, like you, I love being outdoors and chilling with nature. The belly jelly goes on and the lids of the alcohol keep spinning off. This is something none of us have experienced before so it takes time to get equilibrium. Having friends, family and the YouTube community for a chat will keep us heading roughly along the right path, even if now and again we lose our bearing a little. The noggin is a funny tool mate and it takes some taming, especially in times like these, but just remember the little things, enjoy the small victories and we will all be out in the woods or on the dales soaking up them rays and breathing the fresh air on an overnighter before we know it. Keep heading in roughly the right direction and don’t kick yourself for going off the path now and then. Keep strong, keep sane and keep safe.

  • Hi haze man just watched your last vlog, I am a bloke off 51 and suffer from mental health I so much admire you for what you have done to highlight men’s mental health, I have taken a leaf from you and found a bit of land with permission and just starting to get some gear together and do my first camp out, can’t afford a lot in these weird times, Myself I was in intensive care a few weeks ago barely breathing but watched loads of your vlogs and got inspired can’t thank you enough Good job man

  • When you can captivate the hearts n minds of ppl around you with the mere honesty and integrity that you convey then you are a very special soul indeed.Do not underestimate the weight of your influence mate and although you isolated for good reason now and for the foreseeable future I have a feeling you’ll never be alone as everyone of us are here to give back the strength you are so readily projecting. Thanks Hazeo 🙏

  • I’m not on Insta so it’s great to see you still getting out there for a mental cleanse! Love that you express such honesty and don’t leave it on the cutting room floor…if more people lived that way the world would be better for it. You’re a beautiful human and had a sub for life from the first article I watched! Stay safe bud and much love from the lot of us!

  • You’ve gained a new subscriber, mate. I clicked on this vid as I was interested in seeing how to use dandelion flowers as food and I ended up getting a little emotional right along with you! I don’t know you but listening to you, I felt like I’ve known you for a long time. You’re very heartfelt and genuine comments touched me and I thank you for that. This current situation has taken a mental toll on a lot of people. We’re (humans) are gregarious by nature and being told we can’t visit our extended families and friends or just getting out for a coffee and some laughs has a bigger impact than I think a lot of us even realize, myself included. I couldn’t imagine what it’s been like for you, being separated from your partner and your daughter like that. It’s easy to slip into some dark places. Thanks for being so candid and sincere and I’m glad you’re back in a good head space. Stay positive, bud. There is light at the end of this tunnel and we’ll all get there together. Stay safe and healthy and ATB from Nova Scotia, Canada. – Darby

  • Hey Hazy! Loved the article… A year ago I had kidney cancer and had to have my right kidney removed. And everything I went through made me see life in a different way … I am getting back in touch with nature through bushcraft and your articles are part of this return. Missing your articles, but happy to know that this locked time is making you reflect on the direction of your life … take your time, take care and soon our lives will be back to normal. Hope to see you soon and well. 😉

  • Good to see you mate! I hope you are doing well, I’m working non stop and it’s good to just chill out and watch a nice humble haze do his thing and be himself. It takes my mind off all this hectic/frantic stuff that’s going on. Some people just love perusal you do your thing and enjoy your content, it takes a lot of people’s thoughts and problems away for a short time. Plus we learn a thing or two in the process lol Stay safe mate and look after yourself, your daughter and Alice ❤️

  • Heya Hazey thanks for taking the time to make this article. It saddens me a bit to see such a positive inspirational person going through a hard time. I really hope to hear that your situation has improved greatly soon. I dont want to make this message about myself but I think all of us have been struggling a bit. I have become someone I am not lately because of being stuck indoors for more than two months. I havent even been able to get alcohol because its been banned during the lockdown. So I havent even had that little escape. I just wanted to say that I sort of know what you are going through. Many of us out there are without work now and battling. A bit of advice I can give bud is just to take time in your day and just say thank you aloud for every good thing that you still have in your life. Say thanks for the blessings. If you are spritual or Christian then thank God for your blessings. Taking time to do this does two things. It forces you to take time to recognize the good left in your life that you can be grateful for and secondly by focusing on the positive you have less time to focus on the negative. So everytime you feel down then try and do that. It lifts the spirits. We will quickly find that there are more things to be grateful and positive about than there are negative things. Also…dont watch the television and news. Stop perusal the reporting on this virus crap. Its fear porn. It drives fear into us and fear even has a physical response on our bodies and it lowers our immune systems making us more vulnerable to illness.

  • Love your humanity Haze! It has been tough indeed for all but God has been present and poured out His blessing upon so many throughout the world! Keep your chin up and moving in the right direction Haze. God Bless and I’m reminded of the Word which says ” weep with them that weep” and I did indeed and I felt not only your pain but you excitement for the changes in direction once again for you and your loved ones. Take Care!!

  • I was just watched the 10pm news with all the doom and gloom a then saw your article pop up on YouTube. Thank you for making me smile again. You are an absolute star and a dandelion chopper. I am sending you a huge hug. Keep up the spirit and if anything this madness we are going through confirms what is important in life. Thank you for your inspirational works and making us smile. Cheers bud x

  • Just bought one of your stickers. Not for myself really but for my son who’s a self employed musician whose gigs dried up months ago. Symbolic really. Funny story for you. I’m 63, retired and due to have cataract surgery in April. The world is a blur right now. Was out walking with my wife last week when I saw a figure in a red jacket coming towards me so I crossed the road. Only afterwards did my wife tell me I’d just socially distanced myself from a letterbox. You may only have 1 testicle but at least you can see where you’re going. Count your blessings, enjoy your youth, it’s shit getting older.

  • Huge respect to you. This was an emotive watch and you should be very proud of being brave enough to talk so candidly about issues that will be very real for many men perusal this. Fingers crossed this is coming to an end and we can all start returning to some sort of normality soon. In the mean time, I’m off to try some dandelions 😋

  • Absolutely – can’t help but like this guy. What a delight – never seen your website before and didn’t expect it to be quite this rugged — I mean it was about cooking flowers and wow… it was fun to watch and see him use twigs for tongs. BUT HEY … for this newbie, what was the burdock ‘liquid’ stuff that you used to mix w/the flour and what type of flour? What a kick!! Thanks.

  • Hi Haze. I want to say something, but please don’t take it the wrong way. I love perusal you struggle with life. It isn’t because I like to see you suffer, but because I love to see how much you appreciate everything when you pick yourself back up. They say you can’t keep a good man down, and you’ve got back up more times than Chumbawumba. Lots of respect, and even more love for you fella. Just remember that the dark times are brighter when you aren’t staring into a cup. Shout if you ever need a chat to get your head straight.

  • Thanks Haze, doing fine and happy to see that you are too. That didn’t look to bad. What does it taste like in comparison? As usual, you’re always thinking of us and offering your last bit of sustenance, what ever it is to us. Such a big heart. You are an amazing person and don’t ever doubt that. As you say, “much love” to you. ATB.

  • Wow what a moving vlog Hazy 😥 I am delighted to see your beautiful vibrant spirit returning! Great dandelion experiment, I made dandelion honey recently & it’s deeeelish!! I was so moved at the end when you shared with us your cancer story/pictures I was moved to tears. I have recently finished radiotherapy for breast cancer & I feel a little lost & scared at the moment so I really identified with what you were talking about. You are an inspiration to us all, thank you for your honesty, Tears & emotion. You’ve made me feel stronger today 🙏🏼 😊

  • Hey, Hazey, we have missed your vlogs. Very glad to see that you are okay. Chin up, dude. We have been stuck indoors for weeks. I’m very high risk due to MS treatment. We cant get to the coast as it’s in lockdown still, but the numbers of cases are very low- only 546 deaths so far since this all started. Without you and Smash Fishing, we’d be very lonely. ( oh, and the Fish locker and tideline Art and Si finds) . Sending you love from Galicia. Namastay at home

  • Bloody hell mate, never thought I’d shed a year perusal a bushcraft YouTuber but congrats you’ve done it haha. Also I never thought you’d be able to top your campfire fish and chips but you’ve only gone and done it again 😂 I’m fortunate enough to still be working so more than happy to donate a coupla quid, you’ve changed my outlook on life and kicked my arse into gear! Stay safe brother and keep your head up, we’ll get through this!!

  • Another great vlog dude. Love perusal ’em. Kinda transports me to being outdoors, in my noggin. You got a great way of making folks feel like they’re sat with you. Glad you’ve come through the dark patch. You’ll be bringing others with you, out of theirs with vids like this. Bad times are with us, and we need stuff like this to help us through. Respect

  • Hang in there.Discovered your website when perusal you filming with the Fish Locker. I’ll try these dandelions in the morning. Also everyone…the leaves are great in salad. The French say they stop bed wetting in fact they call the plant ´´pee in bed’´. Too often SoMe websites show how wonderful people’s lives are, ignoring the days that aren’t so great. Thanks for your honesty.

  • Bless you mate, great update and I had testicular cancer myself 1998, only advice I can give, dont take what the docs says, you know your own body, asked for second opinion off another doc, he said carnt fined a lump, sent me for an ultrasound boom I was right, always ask for a ultrasound if not sure saved me my friend x

  • Great article, love eating stuff that you find around you, one of my fav things is thistle as I am a great lover of celery, that and nettles yum yum, just subscribed as love the way you produce your vids very down to earth and natural keep up the good work, I will be going through looking at your other vids now

  • Hey, hope you are okay now, in this second year of breakdown/breakthrough. I am thinking, dandelion flowers dipped in chick pea batter, maybe half rice flour, like pakoras… baked. Mmm, burdock. i have been looking at them for years thinking they are riches, and recalling some dandelion cordial we made, back in the seventies, that tastes like summer in winter. Love dandelion greens. … Nice to come across you.

  • Hazey mate… yes I’m away with the fairies, yeah I’m an old hippy and yeah I needed lockdown to keep me away from society in general but check this out bro!!! At about 20:02 and just after you showed the photo of you and your better half and was telling us how much it helped turn your head and heart back on….an angels feather floated from heaven, into shot and wafted on the breeze up to the left of screen! It was a beautiful moment on a lovely article and I want to pass on my love and respect for you. All the very best my brother x.

  • Awww man!! Heart strings well and truly pulled 😭 Bloody love your huge heart, Hazey. So happy you got to see your girls! This shit is tough but you’ve so got this and it’s an absolute pleasure to see your face. Take care of yourself, you’re a bloody National Treasure. To absent friends 🍷 Love you, bye ☺️❤️xxx

  • I don’t know how I came across this article but I thought I’d give it a shot and watch and it touched me also with my loved ones and my daughter also thank you I’ve always heard about dandelions And now we know why everybody keeps trying to tell us. They’re a nasty weed, but they are very good and healthy for us, but they want us to keep killing it and destroying it telling lies about it.its just a great flower for everybody to use. That’s why it’s everywhere. Great article you’re a great guy. Thank you.

  • Thanks for the article Hazy, it is a struggle especially for us self employed folk. I’m an expedition leader so no work for me until god knows when….Universal Credit just about pays my wine bill! I’m drinking too much…will get a grip on it though. Anyway, we are all trying to get through this together. You have inspired me to take up photography and maybe a little articleing for my own small business (Wild Women Camping) but not on your scale with YouTube. So a huge thanks for giving me the inspiration to do something productive during this lock down and thank god for PayPal credit. Stay strong for all of us girls xx

  • recently found your website Haze (and also OutdoorDaze?). Loving your articles and looking through the back catalogue 👍 for someone struggling with some mental health challenges your articles and honesty are a source of cheery, wellbeing and mental comfort. It also inspires me to get out and wild camp myself. Thank you Haze. 🙏

  • Very pleased your head is clear dude. You are very like me and it’s easy to slip into K.Oing yourself with booze. Lockdown has been tough mate and I’m pleased you’re all good brother. Been struggling too but we have just found out we are expecting a little girl in September so there’s always a bit of good! Peace mate…x

  • omg I just wanted to jump through my screen and give you a big cuddle. Love perusal your articles. Hope you get back to work soon we are all going through a mental break down . things can only get better. So glad you got to see your daughter and Alice your a gorgeous couple and your daughter is a little beauty. Now I got to go pick some dandelions dying to try them. gonna buy a patch now . God bless

  • Haze, it wasn’t nice to see you upset towards the end of this article. I think I speak on behalf of your whole audience here, we’re all here for each other. Your articles bring us so much happiness and laughter, it is the least we could do to reciprocate it. Keep doing what you’re doing, you definitely have your head screwed on. Continue to do what you need and want to do, we appreciate every single article and know you dont do this for a living more so a hobby. Not that its much consolation mate but I’m always up for a chat if you feel like it, it would be a pleasure! Keep up the great work, stay safe and well during these times. Much love!

  • Hey buddy! This is the first time I’ve ever seen one of your articles. Historically, people from my culture ate dandelions, and I knew how to prepare them very well. But The old knowledge has been falling away, and we’ve lost it for the most part. I came here searching for the right way to prepare and eat dandelions (because my effort has been an epic fail. Lol) I’ll try your recipe, aiming for a bit later on today. It’s nice to see a guy taking back his life in the face of the early stages of the pandemic. And things are still crazy now, but I was like you were still making a huge difference. Really sorry to hear about what you went through, including the time away from the kids. Guys like you make a huge difference. You personally Make a huge difference, because when you put out these articles, everybody else who i stuck at home and not able to work and maybe even locked down gets to go out there if vicariously with you. That’s not small. So thank you very much.

  • Gotta say more – now that I’ve seen the end…*this* is what the ‘hard’ times have been about. Without real challenges, without being separated from our loved ones, without having our health threatened, our world and Hir health and being forced to slow down and share this all together w/perfect strangers, do you really think you would’ve had the people responding to your instagram post and being gentle, loving with each other. We can choose to come together in love and support even if physically distant or we can choose to sit and get more afraid, more angry, more suspicious. Thanks for this… oh, and for the recipe too except tell us the liquid you used! 🙂 Please.

  • hang in there Haze, your doing good, i know not seeing the family is hard mine are 6000 miles away and my daughter has lupus bu the grand kids rally round for her, in my many years in the military ( british) i have seen lads pull them selves down thinking they cant make it for there family, my answer was to tell them that they are number one and to think of your selves first because if you dont look after number one how the f can you look after others. So stay safe and well and do what you can when you can, you will make even just for your girls.

  • I was coping well to begin with & about a fortnight ago, I hit a brick wall. I’m in a fog at the moment & I can’t seem to shake it off. No doubt I will, well I bloody hope I do anyway because I’m overeating, sleeping too much, or not not enough & at the wrong times. I hope you continue to improve, it’s great to see you & I must be a mind reader, because you popped into my thoughts today, so I knew you’d be uploading today coz I’m a bit psychic like that. As always, much love 💕

  • Stay strong pal. We’re all going slightly mad. Just spent 6 weeks in a room for 23 hours a day in Sahara . No exaggeration mate. But I had good internet to call the fam. Whilst perusal YouTube I saw a documentary on Vietnam. American POW in a room for 6 years boll of rice per day constant torture. Never knowing if today was his execution. So even tho my position was bad. I wasn’t being tortured. Always someone worse off pal. If he could survive that I can survive 6 weeks we can all survive. Stay strong warrior. Kev

It’s so soothing to watch your articles and listen to what you think and feel I just came home from grocery shopping and was really on the edge, stressed and whatnot and it’s so calming to get a little digital escape to the woods In spring I’ll be trying some fried Dandelions myself and hopefully til then life will become easier for all of us I’m still thinking about what you said in a previous vid That it’s the first time we as humans are connected worldwide and as we know there are always two sides of a coin, Thanks again for sharing that <3 Hope you and your loved ones stay healthy and safe! -Everyone in the community included of course. Much Love to you and good luck for business, too.

  • (holy crap this comment is LONG!) seems that no matter where it’s from, depression still hits hard. I’ve been playing games pretty much all my life, really going nowhere. After I graduated from high school in 2015, no car, no license, no friends locally, no job, but at least I have job experience. I’ve been unemployed since June of 2018, and have been living with my parents my whole life. I’m very blessed to have such loving parents that are understanding and caring, but at the same time, I keep talking myself down constantly, cause I’m jobless and don’t have much going for me, that I’m a loser, that I’m not amounting to much of anything. Whenever I see a job opening, I get excited thinking I should take it and the sort, but when I fill it out, I end up backing out cause my complacency to where I am at has made me scared to step out of the light and see the “what ifs”. I keep looking at all kinds of different things and this is probably one of those things that are going to inspire me to keep learning, not that I’m ever stopping cause I fish, and cook, and collect rocks/gemstones. intermittently though I’ve been gaming, and have looked into books. The main problem I see when I get into something is that I just can’t stick to it, my ADD just forces me to move all over in a few different weeks. The learning of mushrooms and wild edibles or just learning about what is deadly/poisonous is just baffling to me. I remember when my gramps had his place in the country there were some patches of woodlands that I would walk to after crossing a couple acres of cornfields, and I would pick up this beautiful purple flower, and I loved them so very much, but it turned out I was picking deadly nightshade!

  • That’s was one of the best articles I think I’ve ever seen.. been feeling like shit the last week or so and been drinking like fk but I got up early this morning and started walking and done a forest gump and kept walking..40km later I’m flaked in the sofa and I think my legs are gonna fall off but I’m feeling great 👍🏼..stay strong everyone 💪🏻

  • Haze, I feel you mate. I’m a RN here in the US, separated from the Mother of my 2 lovely Daughters (who we share 50% in quite a civil manner). I work in acute care at the hospital, and for the potential risk to my girls,… myself and their Mom decided it would be best if I isolated and did not have direct contact with them. They haven’t spent the night here in over 2 months. Fuck! Luckily, we can article chat, and we live 0.5 Miles away so I have been able to drop off gifts, books, treats to them at their Mom’s house and talk to them through a plexi-glass door. But, that’s not the same as what real humans need, like hugs and kisses. This shit is getting old. Although, I am lucky enough to live in a non-urban area where I have tons of access to woods, rivers, trails, etc. I have been trying to keep positive also, solo MTB, hiking, shooting guns in the woods, wild foraging leeks and morels, but it is not enough to satisfy my need for my children’s presence. I feel blessed to have steady employment, where I can help people, and I am happy to put in the work. I feel horrible for the folks that are truly endangered, sick, locked in, and lacking basics. Will you ship items to the US?? If its not too expensive, I would try to buy a hoody and maybe a couple tees from you!! All your content is great, so humble, funny, and I see us as similar in mindset. I have been trying to not drink too much, but here I find myself on a rainy day off at 1 PM drinking a lovely Founder’s Brewing KBS….

  • Pure of nature, Pure of heart, takes alot to open emotions to others especially when they look to you for strength, Hazy never loose yourself in those dark corners, you bring a def spark to this world that shines bright ! Thank you … just had to be dandelion and burdock as the batter sounded scrumptious. .. now top restaurants will be adding your delight to their menu? Charging a fortune ha . Anyways always a joy, be safe and be the rock thats always a safe heaven. Cho for now bro, laters . Peace,

  • Aaah mate. Can totally relate to the head fuck that is lockdown. And similarly, i dusted off some computer games and started playing Championship Manager 97/98 of all things! You’re right, its a totally waste of time. But managed to get it together and get out walking, running and did some wild garlic foraging after seeing your article. Also dusted off my guitar and starting learning some stuff, specifically Spencer The Rover, By John Martyn… Incidentally a song that reminds me of you and your articles. Hope you’re well and stay safe, and sane!

  • I seen you love right back to you, you sound like the perfect mate, the perfect husband, perfect father, son, and anything else, you’re just so positive, one of the most negative things that I’ve always been down about, I’m not very well off and money, and nor did I come from such a family, but I always wanted to leave the states and move to london, just because of the racism in the judgment, and that sort of thing, and you find a lot better mate than friends, in America we say friends and Europe and Australia you guys say mate, so I could be because saying anyone at any time, because I’ve always wanted to just leave so badly

  • Honestly there’s a rate patch of dandelions near the bypass near mine and I’ve seen people out picking them I wish I wasn’t on the bus back from a camp because I’d of loved to see what they had planned for them as they’re a cracking herbal medicine note why they’re everywhere, we took them with us to keep us on top form

  • Excellent job man, its not loopy from covid more folks should be learni to eat like this instead of processed poison, Excellent work, have you done it since? What are a few of your favorite plant based dishes? I like making these sweet potato fries, need to get back on that, load em with smoked paprika, cayenne cumin
