Can Dry Sunflowers Be Fed To Cows?

Sunflower silage is a suitable feed for beef cows, but high moisture levels can be a challenge due to the sunflowers’ tendency to dry down poorly. To reduce moisture levels, dry feed must be added to the silage pile to prevent seepage. Sunflower silage is about 80 times the feeding value of corn silage, but harvesting it as forage requires careful consideration of several factors.

Sunflower seeds are a valuable feed option for cows, offering essential nutrients such as protein, fiber, and minerals. Their high-fat content, especially in the seeds, can help increase their energy content. Dry cows and heifers may be fed sunflower silage as their only source of forage. Damaged sunflowers can be ensiled easily by chopping and incorporating them. However, sunflowers treated with Assert, Gramoxone Extra, Prowl, Sonalan, and Ultima should not be used for animal feed.

Sunflower meal is one of the major protein sources in livestock feed, especially dairy cattle, chickens, pigs, and rabbits. Feeding sunflower seeds to high-producing cows can increase caloric intake and maximize milk production. The ideal moisture content for ensiling sunflowers is between 30 and 40 DM, as less than 30 DM can cause undesirable fermentation.

Sunflowers can be planted with corn and other crops, making great silage. However, controlling weeds can be challenging. Sunflower meal is one of the major protein meals used for livestock feeding, particularly for ruminants. It is generally a valuable and safe product, whose nutritional value is significant.

Sunflower oilcakes, a by-product of the oil industry, have the potential to be used for human consumption, achieving sustainability and a circular economy. The nutritional composition of sunflower seeds, cold-pressed oil, and remaining press-cakes was assessed to evaluate their potential as food ingredients. Sunflower oil contains oleic and linoleic acids, which cannot be synthesized by humans and require assimilation through a diet. Sunflower seeds are highly nutritive, with 33.

85 proteins, 65. 42 lipids, and 18 mineral elements. Sunflower oilcakes are richer in fibers and proteins, with a balanced amino acid profile. The remaining oil is abundant in unsaturated fatty acids.

The study found that sunflower oilcakes have valuable components that make them suitable for healthy diets with adequate intake of nutrients and other bioactive compounds with beneficial effects. Due to the rapid expansion of the human population and environmental issues like over-exploitation of resources and environmental degradation, a transition to the circular economy and new strategies to minimize food waste during the supply chain are necessary.

Conventional methods for waste disposal and valorization include incineration, aerobic fermentation, composting, fertilizer, and feedstuff. Alternative solutions involve extracting the maximum value from waste, creating value-added products, and re-circulating them, creating the concept of “waste = food”.

Sunflower cake can be used as an alternative to soybean meal in beef cattle diets, improving the in vitro digestibility of dry matter, organic matter, and protein. This can reduce production costs and improve the ruminal digestion rate. Levels above 400 g kg-1 reduce the release of final fermentation products, such as short chain fatty acids, which are the main energy source for ruminants. The composition of the chemical-bromatologic structure, carboidrato formation, and kinetics of the in vitro degradation of cana-de-açúcar fibra can be studied in a study published in the Brazilian Revista de Zootecnia.

  • A little bit of a long article for me but useful. I have grown sunflowers with a much larger head although when my lamb ate the top head off one of them it grew several mini heads on it instead. Interesting you don’t plant the seeds. I might try that method. I know the sunflowers has improved the soil quality in my garden bed.
