Will Orchids Ever Again Have Flowers?

Orchids are perennial plants that can bloom repeatedly as long as they have healthy flower spikes. The type of orchid determines if it will grow back each year, with most blooming once a year but some varieties can bloom twice or even more times. To properly care for your orchid after they bloom, look for a new flower spike growing from the node you cut or out of the base of the plant.

Orchids can rebloom every 8 to 12 months, but some will flower again in the same season. Cut off their spikes once the flowers fall off and ensure that the remaining plant receives adequate sunlight. The recommended temperature range is between 60°F to 75°F. A happy, healthy orchid will usually rebloom every 8 to 12 months, but some may flower again in the same season.

Phalaenopsis orchids are cheap to buy and their flowers last for many weeks. Once the flowers fade, it’s tempting to discard them, but there’s no need to toss them after flowering; they can bloom again. Most species only bloom once a year, usually during the same time each year. In the meantime, you can let the plant grow while making sure to fertilize it monthly or sometimes.

Orchids grow new stems as they come out of their dormant period, getting ready to bloom again. It may take a while for new stems to grow, but the payoff is worth it as orchid blooms last longer than cut flowers.
