As a Christian haole who’s spent most of my life on the Big Island of Hawaii, and learned a whole new way of life from the aloha Hawaiians have shown me; this movie really hurts me. I have spent over 40 years of my life bearing the burden of atrocities like this; but this isn’t the worst one. After about 30 years, my friend told me a much worse story than this. Hawaii was the most literate nation on earth. They opened their doors to the world with aloha. They granted Americans citizenship and the right to vote. Sugar robber barons overthrew the Kingdom of Hawaii in an illegal coup, denied Hawaiians the vote, outlawed their language, religion, and culture; and turned the Hawaiians into an illiterate people; by only teaching them how to do manual labor. The missionary sugar barons who’s job it was to teach people how to be literate in many languages, bought a lot of land from Hawaiians who didn’t own it instead. They’d get a man drunk and talk him into signing the deed to his family’s land, knowing he didn’t own it. Then, they’d hunt down anyone in the family who had a legitimate claim to the land and murder them. Many children of royal Hawaiian land owners were raised in hiding, by Filipino, Portuguese, and Chinese immigrants. With so many Hawaiians dying young of the diseases haoles brought, many Hawaiian royals who survived the hunt, lost all connections with their families while they were in hiding. I know two brothers who own the deed to Waikiki, but after all these years, they’re still afraid to claim the land.

Kris Kristofferson’s career as a leading man in cinema released films ended after Heaven’s Gate (though he did star in Welcome Home in 1989. The film was ok but not great). Actually I LOVED HEAVEN’S GATE! (I also loved A Star Is Born, Vigilante Force, Convoy, Pat Garett And Billy The Kid all great Kristofferson films.). Kristofferson’s career as a cinema leading man had a revival of sorts when he played Whistler in the Blade horror film series (though Wesley Snipes was the star) and he cameoed in one of the Planet of The Apes films (a shame that particular apes film was God awful and probably didn’t do a heck of a lot for his career). I also loved Lone Star! Kris’s son and I once talked about that film.
Stealing land from the Hawaiian people is happening right now!! OW and her friends keep acquiring parcel of land after parcel, after it had been destroyed by fire . They do this in their own name, or in the name of a company which is owned by another company, which belongs to a trust which owns many companies and this goes on forever. No one can dig deeply enough to uncover this dirt. Just like the United Kingdom use to own the vast majority of the land on this planet! They still haven’t returned many islands all over the world and land inside a foreign country!!! So many lives were lost during these invasions!! RIP poor people! ♥️
Love this movie. The acting is superb and the 30s atmosphere is wonderful. There are, however, an awful lot of plots crammed into 4 hours of mini-series: the racism of the powerful haoles; the equivocal position of the non-powerful whites such as the cops, who were also under the thumb of the power elite; the standoff between the US Navy and the civil authorities over who had authority over crimes committed by naval personnel; the Clarence Darrow-based figure of the elderly power lawyer — a totally manipulative man both professionally and personally, especially vis-a-vis his “daughter-wife” and his contempt for the cop who dares to try to take her away from him — calling him a hick and a nonentity from the boondocks (Hawaii was only a territory, remember). But ultimately, she goes with her rich old husband, doesn’t she? Obviously the position and the wealth mean too much to her for her to stay. Naive of the cop to think that she might. That’s why I found the ending sad. The culprit was going to be arrested; before Captain Maddux left to try to beat the sailing of the ship, he instructed his Sergeant to go down to Pearl Harbor and take Bryce Parker into custody and told the D.A. to take the women in for booking on charges. But Captain Maddux was doomed to disappointment, and if the power elite has its way, he’ll probably lose his job.
