Sunflowers are easy to grow and can be planted during warm spring or early summer temperatures. They take between 7 and 12 weeks to grow, and planting them on the north side helps prevent them from casting shadows on other plants. When the vines reach the tops of the sunflowers, loosely tie twine from the tall ones to those on the other side to allow morning glories to climb across the house.
A good starting point is to plant one covering an area of 4′ x 4′. To create the house outline, sprinkle flour on the ground and mark the perimeter with a flour-sprinkled line. Sunflower seeds should be planted along the west or south side of your home, as some varieties, like mammoth, can grow up to 10 feet tall. To protect them from deer, you can plant seeds in pots near your house or start indoors a few weeks.
Sunflowers grow best in locations with full sun, as they require long, warm soil. Choose a sunny spot with fertile soil and full sun, making 1-inch-deep holes in the soil and placing one seed in each hole. Cover the soil and plant sunflowers in full sun and rich soil on the north side of the garden to prevent shadowing other plants.
Plant seeds at the base of the sunflowers along the two longest sides of the house, allowing morning glories to grow up the sunflower stalks. Sunflowers are a hardy annual that can grow in any soil type, but they are best planted on the north side of the garden to avoid shadowing other plants.
