Which Indoor Plants Are Acceptable For Aquariums?

Houseplants are essential for enhancing the aesthetic appeal of any aquarium, providing shelter and breeding grounds for aquatic life. They also offer a safe haven for fish, offering shelter from potential dangers. Common safe houseplants in fish tanks include Anubias, Java Fern, and Peace Lilies. However, it is crucial to research before introducing new plants, as they can be toxic if submerged in water.

Some low-maintenance houseplants for aquaponics fish tanks include Spider Plant, Peace Lily, and Philodendron. These plants are low-maintenance and ideal for creating a lush underwater habitat. However, many common houseplants can be toxic if submerged in water, potentially harming fish or other aquatic creatures. To ensure safety, it is recommended to choose plants that are compatible with your aquarium environment.

Some common houseplants for aquaponics fish tanks include Pothos, Peace Lilly, Lucky Bamboo, Wandering Jew, Monstera, Aquatic Palm, Ferns, Sweet Ivy, and Philodendrons. These plants help keep the water clean and healthy, while also promoting the growth of other plants like Homalomena humilis, Homalomena insignis, and other species. Some species of Juncus are safe to grow partially submerged, while others can grow fully submerged.

In conclusion, houseplants play a crucial role in creating a beautiful and safe environment for fish in aquariums. It is essential to choose plants that are safe and compatible with your aquarium environment to ensure a healthy and enjoyable experience for your fish.

  • Your fish room, or should i say plant room, is super awesome ! Congratulations for the hard work. I was trying to do some research if we can put a whole snake plant underwater in a fish tank and it lead me to your article. I want to try that with my fish tank but i’m a bit apprehensive thinking that the plant might rot and damage my fish tank water quality and possibly hurt my fishes. thanks for your article.

  • I know this article is getting older, but I wanted to thank you. I have a shrimp-only tank with Neocaridina and I just bought the smallest Pothos I could find at Lowes. I have a lot of stones and shrimp “shapes” and a spiderwood “tree” already, but I’m not good with aquatic plants and wanted to try it, and this article gave me the confidence to try it.

  • i love the mangroves in my tanks. They actually dont prefer salt water but they can thrive in saltwater, they do much better in freshwater tanks. I have a saltwater and a freshwater tank both have mangroves and the freshwater ones are able to grow out much faster bc they arent fighting to keep the salt out. I also lovemy swiss cheese plant in my freshwater tanks and pothos they all do GREAT

  • Hi guys I’m using the common spider plant I live in England but .so yesterday I ripped apart a big spider plant and got 2 nice stands of roots in the corners on the tank r they safe ? I hope they’ll draw the nitrate and ammonia out of the water pls can u help me weather my gulper catfish will not b hurt buy this

  • New subscriber here. I have a thriving pothos and monstera deliciosa both about a few years old, and I really want to put them in an aquarium and create a symbiotic ecosystem. Can they go from being established in soil to aquarium just like that? If so, can maybe 1/4 of the plant be submerged without getting root rot or damage to the leaves?

  • Those supports look like wood, which bends over time with weight applied. The tanks are touching. What happens when the wood bends over time and applies force to the tops of the tanks where they meet? Catastrophic failures often begin very slowly and finish quickly. In other words, it seems like nothing is happening for a very long time and then everything happens all at once. I made this account just to make this comment. Please consider this.

  • Ever have a car in front of you in traffic be so petrified to make a turn that they wait until the last second of the yellow light then turn and leave you with a fat red light in which you could’ve easily gotten through if not for that person? Ever have this happen every single day of your life? Yeah.

  • I only have 3 types of house plants in my tanks at the moment…PeaceLilly, Pothos and creeping Jenny. The creeping Jenny has taken over my outdoor tub which looks great. I absolutely adore those inch plant you have. I’m going to have to buy one. The breeding rack is looking great. Btw Did you try putting a microfibre cloth underneath the air-pump yet to help reduce the vibration noise?
