Where Should Orchids Be Trimmed Once They Bloom?

To ensure the health and longevity of your orchid plants, it is essential to trim them after they bloom. The base of the plant, or pseudobulbs or keikis, where the spike initially appeared, is where the spike initially appeared. Some growers recommend cutting the stem down to the soil level if it is brown or yellow and shriveled, as it will not produce any more flowers. Some believe that cutting off the stem entirely at the base where it comes out of the leaves will result in a new bloom in several months.

To cut an orchid stem above a node, look for a node that is at least two inches below where the blooms were. Use sharp, sterile scissors or pruning. After the flowers fade, trim the stalk just below the flower cluster to encourage more buds. For Dendrobiums, trim just at the base of the flower cluster, not the base of the plant.

Caring for trimmed orchids involves cutting the flower spike back, repotting if necessary, adding fertilizer, moving the orchid to a cooler temperature, and decreasing the amount of water. If the flower spike is a healthy green color, one option is to find the node just below the lowest flower and prune it about an inch above the node. Some growers believe that cutting the stem entirely at the base where it comes out of the leaves will result in a new bloom in several months.

For healthy, green spikes, find a node under the lowest flower bloom and trim 1 inch above that node or bump on the orchid spike. For unhealthy spikes, trim 1 inch above that node or bump on the orchid spike.
