The Sunflower Art Festival, held on Friday, June 2, 2023, will feature street theatre, flower decorations, and a drone performance at 11 pm. The Van Gogh Museum celebrated its 50th anniversary with a festive program for people of all ages. The festival offers an opportunity to explore the world of Vincent van Gogh’s renowned Sunflowers, learn about his artistic journey, and learn about the restoration of the 130-year-old painting.
The Van Gogh Museum’s exhibition on its Sunflowers opens today, offering visitors an unusual opportunity to see the back of the picture, revealing a wooden strip that was removed. The Philadelphia Sunflowers, acquired by the museum in 1963, will travel outside the United States for the first time since its purchase in 1935. These five versions of Van Gogh’s “Sunflowers” painting will be showcased simultaneously on Facebook Live.
Van Gogh painted multiple canvases of the bright yellow flowers between 1888 and 1889 while living in Arles, France. These paintings are among his most famous and are now found at museums worldwide, from Tokyo to Amsterdam. The National Gallery’s painting is one of the five famous versions, while the other four are on public display at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam and the Neue Pinakothek in Munich.
The masterpiece is celebrated in a show at Tokyo’s Sompo Museum, and the painting will be lent to the National Gallery’s exhibition Van Gogh: Poets and Lovers from September 14 to 19 January 2024. This publication focuses on the version of Sunflowers in the Van Gogh Museum’s collection, which has been studied using advanced technological tools.
