Where Can I Find Ferns And Orchids In Jamaica?

Jamaica is a popular destination for nature lovers, with over 3000 species of plants growing on the island, including 27 unique species. One quarter of the island’s orchid species can be found nowhere else on Earth, and most are found in high mountainous and forested regions. The focus of this publication is to highlight the beauty of Jamaican orchid species and aid in their identification.

Jamaica historically has played an important role in the development of ferns, which have a beautiful green star-like shape and can thrive in damp soil and direct contact with the environment. The Martin Hill Orchid Sanctuary, located south of Christiana, houses several orchid species, with over 100 being seen and photographed there.

Orchids in the wild are threatened by deforestation, housing developments, bauxite mining, charcoal burners, agriculture, and local market sales. Jamaica offers a list of tropical flora, including exotic flowers and orchids, with radiant beauty and elegance. A Jamaican flower shop specializes in beautiful flowers, orchids, plants, seedlings, hanging baskets, and original Jamaican art.

Ferns are abundant, with about one hundred species described from the Cockpit Country, including many Jamaican endemics. One of these is a rare fern found only in the western side of Jamaica, Little London and Negril.

Mandeville, Jamaica is home to over 220 species of orchids, many of which are endemic to the island, making them unique and found nowhere else in the world.

What is the national flower of Jamaica?

Jamaica’s national tree, Lignum Vitae, is native to the island and was discovered by Christopher Columbus. Its name, “Wood of Life”, was likely due to its medicinal properties. The tree grows in dry woodlands along the North and South coasts of the island and is highly ornamental. It is used in ship propeller shaft bearing manufacturing and creating unique curios. The Blue Mahoe, a primary economic timber, is used for reafforestation and cabinet construction.

Its attractive blue-green color and variety of grain and color tones make it a valuable source of cabinet timber. Both local and foreign trade consume thousands of feet of this beautiful timber annually.

Where are orchids mostly found?

Orchids are highly adaptable and can grow in almost all climates except for extremes. They are found in both pantropical and endemic habitats, with most species growing in tropical forests. Neotropical orchids are found in southern Central America, northwest South America, and countries along the Andes Mountains. However, most orchids depend on a single pollinating species, and if that species is eliminated, the orchid that depends on that species becomes threatened by extinction. This could lead to habitat fragmentation and rainforest destruction, potentially causing the extinction of many orchid species.

Jamaica flowers, originally from Africa and India, have been deeply integrated into Mexican cuisine since colonial times. They are used to prepare agua de jamaica, a freshly flavored water that is enjoyed daily throughout Mexico. This tart, refreshing, and light flavor complements Mexican food well. Patricia Jinich, a former political analyst, is the official chef of the Mexican Cultural Institute in D. C., where she heads Mexican Table, a culinary program with workshops, cooking demonstrations, and tasting dinners.

She will appear as a guest on Paula Deen’s Best Dishes Food Network show on August 15. Jinich lives in Maryland with her husband and three sons. As a treat, her mother would bring a pitcher of agua de jamaica to make mini popsicles or jello, both common in Mexico.

In what country do orchids grow?

Orchids are found worldwide, with the highest numbers of species per region occurring in Colombia, Ecuador, New Guinea, Brazil, Peru, or Borneo. Desert regions are typically poor in species, while orchids are remarkably tolerant to climate, reaching into the far north and subantarctic south. The number of orchid species increases exponentially in the tropics, particularly in mountainous regions like Colombia, New Guinea, Indonesia, Ecuador, and Costa Rica.

The Malesian islands are counted separately, but Indonesia with over 5000 species would have the most species. Ecuador, with around 4000 species, is the country with the most orchid species, possibly due to a comparably good treatment of the island. Colombia likely has more orchid species than Ecuador and catches up quickly due to better accessibility. If the entire island is treated, New Guinea would also be a runner-up for the most orchid species per area.
