When Should Orchids Be Planted?

Orchids are a beautiful and diverse plant family, with over 30,000 different species and 200,000 hybrid varieties. They are one of the two largest families of plants in the plant kingdom. Orchid care, or orchid culture, is a balance of water, fertilizer, light, temperature, air movement, and humidity. To grow orchids, follow these steps:

  1. Orchid in a pot: Stand young orchid plants in trays in a greenhouse, well out of direct sunlight. Water the plants thoroughly until water starts to run out.

  2. Plant orchids in the spring or summer when the weather is warmer and more humid. This provides ideal conditions for orchids to establish and grow well. Orchids are light-hungry plants, so they should get 12 to 14 hours of light each day, year-round.

  3. Choose a good spot for the repotted orchid: Choose an east-facing window with a few hours of mild morning sun to provide the necessary humidity.

  4. Attach orchids to trees: Identify where on the tree to attach your orchid, clean the roots of soil or sphagnum moss, and repotted soon after purchase.

  5. Repot orchids soon after buying them, then every year or two after that to avoid losing the beautiful flowers on your orchid.

  6. For those growing orchids outside, it is recommended to do so from late spring through summer to early fall. If you are placing orchids outdoors when it is cold, it is best to do so during the winter months.
