When Are Tulips Moveable?

Tulips should be transplanted in the fall once the foliage has died back, waiting until frost has passed and the soil has warmed. Dig up the bulbs and separate them gently, then replant them four to six inches deep and about six inches apart, making sure the pointy side of the bulb is present. The best time to transplant tulips is during their dormant season, usually occurring in late autumn or early winter.

Tulips can be dug up and replanted as soon as the foliage dies back (turns brown) in early summer or fall (October). If you intend to move tulips in the fall, mark the site when the foliage is present so the bulbs can be located in October. Tulips are quite cold-tolerant, but freezing winter temperatures may delay growth. Snow can help in this case, as it can insulate the foliage from extreme cold.

For best results, wait until fall to dig up the bulbs, but any time after the last frost is fine. For best results, move them as soon as the flowers aren’t pretty anymore. The best time to transplant spring bulbs is in summer or fall, once the foliage has sufficiently died back. Flowering spring bulbs gather energy, and the most important time is after flowering.

If tulips are in pots, give them plenty of liquid feed and water until the foliage starts to die back. Tulip season is pretty much over, so it’s safe to transplant them in September.
