In warm climates, it is recommended to divide calla lilies in spring, while in cooler areas, it may be necessary to do so in late. If you live in a climate where you must dig up calla lilies, plant them where they can enjoy full sunshine. In hotter areas, choose a spot with afternoon shade.

Rhizomes can be divided from a fellow gardener or neighbor, as they tend to multiply and spread over time. Calla lilies can overwinter outdoors in warmer climates but should be replanted in fall and replanted outdoors in the following spring.

Calla lilies are tender perennials that require rhizomes to be dug up in fall and stored indoors over the winter months. After a frost kills the foliage, cut off 1 to 2 inches above the soil surface. The best time to dig calla lilies is after all frost danger has passed and the soil is beginning to warm. After the leaves have died back, trim off the rhizomes and wait for the next spring to see them bloom again. In colder zones, it is advisable to wait until the soil is at least 65°F.
