I was camping a few days ago with the fire going when a toadlet jumped into the fire pit and couldn’t get out. He was jumping all over the place trying to escape the heat and ran under a burning log at one point. I dove in and scooped him out of the ashes and took him home to make sure he was ok. Luckily I have dart frogs so I had fruit flies ready. The little dude is doing fine now and is growing nicely.
I had two toads. I had a male and a female. The female died after a couple of years after we got them. Before she died the male was eating a lot and and was really happy. But after she died he didn’t want to eat as often and he stopped moving around in his tank. I think that has some sort of separation anxiety. Or not maybe he’s just old. But maybe he does. I don’t even know if toads can have that. EDIT: i’m sad to say that my male just passed away yesterday. 😭😭

when I got my first toad in third grade, the pet store workers told us we needed and aquarium (plus aquarium stuff like filters) and on of those red heat lamps for the night time (the light bulbs would explode from time to time). Hey, thank you so much for this article! My friend and I have been wanting to keep toads for a long time. Last night, we were walking around his property when we spotted two American toads who were trapped in a well and extremely malnourished. They were weak from treading water for so long, and one of them is so skinny her body width is slightly thinner than that or her head. (These guys are usually way fat and live around my friend’s patio in gutter pipes and other little hides, feeding on bugs that swarm under the patio lights.) We currently have them housed in a 36″x18″x18″ bin with holes drilled into the sides and a locking lid. They have mealworms and beetles dusted with multivitamin powder, Eco Earth to burrow in, a shallow dish with conditioned water, and a bark hide. We originally weren’t sure if we would keep them after we nursed them to health, but now we’re really considering keeping them and moving one of them into another 36″x18″x18″ bin with the same commodities later.
We have a pond in our backyard that wild toads (and the turtles from the neighborhood) visit every year to lay their eggs. We once took some tadpoles inside as turtle food, but she didn’t eat them and so we had baby toads jumping around the living room a few weeks later. The cat loved it, I wasted an entire afternoon to catch them all.
I love toads and frogs. In the summer I love finding toads outside my front door. We had a few toads that lived under the deck at my mom’s house when I was younger. We’d always see them hanging out right outside the door. We’d play with them for a little while, then release them and they never went very far. They’re so cute. ^^

Lol !! My daughter “saved” a bb toad from being hit by a golf cart at our camping and … here I am, proud owner!! I have to admit the first month and half was hard, as several pet store told me it was way too small to be fed cricket and would most likely die … so after a couple of orange 🍊 and fruit flies all around my kitchen, Lolly is now big enough for crickets!!! The girl at the pet store was so chocked to see me back, she told me ; I never thought that you’d make it (it’s our first one), so now lolly is nice and healthy, very happy, and I actually really enjoy perusal her chasing cricket, I actually think that she recognize me because she comes everytime I go close to her terrarium and I swear she’s (or he) is looking at me !!
Caught one from the wild as a kid and kept it as a summer pet once! These little buggers are walking stomachs! Thankfully mine didn’t get obese despite me being young and not fully knowing what I was doing, but well fed it certainly was. The thing I remember the most is how quickly (and how well) it tamed. The first week it acted like you’d expect a wild toad to, being afraid of me and trying to escape my hand whenever I tried to grab it. After about a week though it mellowed down to the point where it no longer fled from me at all, and would allow me to pick it up at will and even ate from my hand. I released it back in the forest by fall so it could find a spot to hibernate through winter. Now I know better than to take things from the wild of course, but I’d say if your only two choices are getting a wild one from your backyard or buying a wild caught one your pet store is selling… maybe its better to take it from the wild yourself than to spend your money to encourage a pet store which likely gets many of its animals from pet mills. Ethical pet stores are unfortunately not the norm, though there are good ones out there who even refuse to sell certain animals like kittens and puppies because they are so overly bred while shelters are crowded with them.

A tiny baby toad is living in the ground cover I planted in a box. I live in an apartment and I have visions of this creature the size of my pinky tip getting shredded by the riding mower. I’ve decided he’s coming in. I’ve watched your website for years so I had actually set up the environment before perusal and I did good. I have fungal gnats in the substrate and I see about a dozen inside the enclosure 🤷🏼♀️ I’ve got the treated water in the dish. He’s so tiny it’s a dish of tiny rocks and then water. oh, how much I love toads. They’re so cute, and after perusal this article, I’m confident to try to ask and work something out, I just have a few questions: 1: Can I put the toad container by/near the window? Or, for them to understand night and day, they just look for “bright and dark”. It’s not really a important question because it does get bright then dark in my room, but the place I could put them (not by the window) are usually dark places. 2: How often do I clean the enclosure or the bedding?

When we I caught her she was under an inch, and thanks to you and a couple other people, I have been able to take care of her. She hasn’t grown much yet, (she is now about an inch or a little bit above) but she will hopefully live a long and happy life! (I read that they can live up to 50 years in captivity!!!)

I had a Fowler’s toad who wasn’t eating (she last ate the 14th, I feed them every 2-3 days) I tried feeding her everyday after she didn’t eat for the next feeding, but she wouldn’t. During this time she was still hopping about and digging and chilling in the little water dish they have. Today I found her dead in her enclosure. We’ve had he for about a year and a half (she was a wild toad at first but she wondered into a building and we kept her). I just wanna know what happened to her. I’ve looked up what could have happened and most of them just say “it’s nature” but I just can’t except that as an answer. Any help would be appreciated.
I had two pet toads for a bit and I agree that they make great pets. Sure, you can’t cuddle them like a dog, but they’re fun to observe and care for. Unfortunately my ladies both passed away while I was starting college last fall and I still miss them every day. Thankfully there’s plenty of toads out during the summer and I can hear them singing at night.
I found a toad-let that was stranded in my back steps to my basement… it must have been there awhile. I scooped it up. It was so dry that its legs were stuck to it. Didn’t move at all. I did what you said… now the little one looks full of life, and jumping around. It looks way better then when I came across it. Working on getting some fruit flies. I always wanted a toad. I love to gather toad tadpoles at a nearby park in the spring. I watch them morph and then release them when they’re about the size of a dime. This year, I’m going to be more prepared as I’m already propagating springtails (which is the best thing to eat at their small size) and have a bioactive enclosure setup for them.

This was so incredibly informative. I have a 5 year old little girl that has become obsessed with catching toads around our house. I make her release them before bedtime, mainly because I didn’t know how to feed or care for them. The itty bitty ones can’t jump out of the tiny baby pool that we’ve set up a little oasis. I believe any toad much larger than an half an inch can escape easily. I may consider trying to make an aquarium, but I feel so bad about ripping them from the wild. My 5 yo seems to appreciate that as well 🥰. But I don’t feel like going toad hunting 1-3x a day either. If I felt I could provide for the a little more, I might consider keeping one for a few days???
I’m new to the reptile pet life! We caught 15 gulf coast toads in our backyard a few weeks back when our beloved dog passed. 😢 So I was willing to entertain my daughters & daycare kiddos idea to keep some. After perusal a few of your articles, I have started making a bioactive terrarium 🐸 We have 2 small (a little smaller than a dime) ones in a 2 gallon tank. Having a hard time finding a variety of food for them. Currently feeding them flightless gnats. Do they also need soil to burrow in? 🫣 currently they have tree bark, watering dish, and some leaves.
Found a little toad while working in pest control and since it was in the path of where pesticides would be sprayed it had to be rehomed and the prospect of keeping a toad interested me so i rigged up a plastic tube and old cat water fountain and made an enclosure. It was really fun to feed the toad and watch it grow, take articles of it eating in slow mo (I uploaded some of these to YouTube and the first article short received 6k views and that inspired me to create more articles) Then after seeing a wild toad outside and thinking about how indoor life was limiting I put it outside and it was interesting because the toad had grown accustomed to me feeding it and wasn’t scared of me and would keep returning to my doorstep for food or during rain storms. Needless to say-toads can be amazing and inspiring. Never thought I’d be one to get into toads but now every time I see one I find them fascinating and like to learn the specific species and it all started with one of these cute little toads. Tonight was pretty special; saw 4 toads and 2 frogs, captured and kept the smallest one because it has a beautiful vibrant red coloration. Thank you for all this information. We’ve found a large female down the street from us a few weeks ago. Busy road with a few flattened toad casualties. If we were to relocate her blocks away to a friends garden near a different water she’d. Would she try migrating back to her old home or more likely find the new spawn ground on her own? I use silicon baking mats to keep my glass terrariums moist. Easy to make ventilation slits by shifting them forth or back and to cut out a hole to match the girth of your dome light. Cheap and they can take temps over 250C and last forever. So with most lamps you’ll be fine. Be aware that the real cheap ones round $5 cant handle extreme heat as well as the more expensive ones like $10/15. Have fun…greetz for Holland.
I’m sure some places in this country have such high chlorine content in the tap water to cause some harm, however, I have successfully kept American, Oak, Fowlers, and Spadefoots using tap water without any problems, I have also raised toads tadpoles and such various species of frog tadpoles as Bull frog, Leopard frogs, African clawed frogs, Yellow legged frogs and Treefrogs in goldfish bowls filled with Tap water and I either keep them outside ( which in the case of tree frogs is a very good idea, since they can climb glass, and you dont want a bunch of tiny treefroglets running around your house getting stepped on eaten by the cat or just drying out under the couch) or in the case of others somewhere where they get natural sunlight at least 4 hours a day and I encourage the growth ofalgae, because they will graze on it, I use plain old gold fish food to feed them sometimes with Guppy food and they munch it right down and stay plenty healthy. The only problems I’ve encountered with tap water has been with larval salamanders and newts, except for some CaliforniaNewts that I put in a 10 gal.aquarium outside on the deck where they got sun 4 hours in the morning and shade the rest of the day, I actually hatched these from eggs I rescued from a cement pond that was drying up in the backyard of an abandoned house in my neighborhood. I successfully raised them to adulthood and then took them to a nearby creek that I knew had a population of newts in it, and with my son let them go free.
Hello! Its October now and i’m starting to worry about my baby toad hibernating. I’ve searched this up and vie gotten a few answers. I feed him mealworms and nightcrawlers fresh from my garden, but it says meal worms can cause liver damage to frogs due to them being high in starch. Is this true? (IVE BEEN perusal YOU FOR 1-2 YEARS NOW AND IM OBSESSED! KEEP ON MAKING LIFE INTERESTING FOR ME!!!!) (my toads name is Sherbet :))
I think the reason they want to stay on “top of the log” instead of under is because Toads like to get “DRY” and I would recommend putting a Rock in there rather then the log (as it gets water logged) a rock stays dry, this will create a place where they can get away from the moisture when possible. Being They are Toads, unlike frogs they need to be able to dry out almost like a reptile at times when they choose. So that’s why I think they may want to sit on the log.
That bigger one has a very interesting, cool style walk. I think what I found in my nearly empty pool is a Woodhouse toad but am not sure because I could not for the life of me get a super clear picture of it. So based on the picture I provided to a reptile rescue by my house, they said what a house. However, I’m trying to find out if that is in fact what this toad is.
At work, and a huge swarm of toadlets emerged from the pond next to the facility and marched across the parking lot. I rescued like 15 of them, and yeah they were too small to feed pinhead crickets. But I found a small ant colony of super tiny ants living inside a hollow and dried pokeberry stem. I put that in their enclosure, and I would crack the step open a little bit and all the ants would swarm out. The toadlets are now well fed.
This is going to make me sound really uneducated but here goes. A few months back, in September, I went into my garage to find a little toad. (I live in North Yorkshire) There was mold growing on her back and I decided my garage was not the right place for her. So I picked her up and brought her inside. Now she’s in a 30 litre tank. I feed her mealworms every day. There’s potting soil and Eco earth, pebbles, plants and hides. Though she doesn’t seem to grow. It’s been 4 months and I’ve seen no difference in her size. She’s around 2 inches long, she has orangey brown spots, along with black spots. I figured she was a toad. I only have pets like beetles, fish and giant African land snails, though I’m really struggling to find some advice, are there any you would give? Thank you :))
I have 2 northeast American toads, 1,Cyce, is brick red, and his name is short for cyclops (he only has one eye, he is missing his left eye, I don’t know why or if he was born with it or not, he is completely healthy though, he is pretty slow at catching food because of this disability though), 2,Jumo, he is dirt brown (he is also half blind, he has two eyes, but his right eye doesn’t have a cornea, he is a lot better that Cyce at hunting though) and those are my toads, if you have any recommendations on how to give them special care that would be nice, they are both completely healthy and I treat them with care
While driving back home with my side by side I didn’t notice a toad infront of me until I drove past it, luckily not over! I checked on him but noticed that his leg was bleeding a little which I think was from the cats I have outside. Anyway, I wanted to heal him safely so I made a little enclosure, which he quickly warmed up to! Hopefully he gets better.
One time when I was at my grans house a bunch of baby toads were hopping and freaking out (finds out there was a tornado on its way and I didn’t know) I put all the toads I could in as many jars I could find because I wanted to make sure they would be safe and not blown away by the high winds, after the storm passed I wanted to keep em but because I had no clue how to take care of a toad I released them near a pond near my grans place. As a Chef, I would freak if I came home to see toads on my kitchen counter..I caught a young America toad a few years ago and I housed it very nicely but the animal wanted out and constantly hopped against the glass. Lesson learned, never use a container that is see through, it makes your toad want to wander. I wound up letting it go. I see it from time to time near my shed..cool article..

I’ve had toads living on my concrete car port for years. They just sleep on some discarded bucket lids, nestled in some used rags. They eat june bugs and other beetles. During winter they just turn into toad-cicles and then thaw out and continue like nothing happen. Toads literally don’t care, they’re immortal, you can keep a toad in an old shoe as long as you fed it I imagine.
My friend has a resturuant here in Thailand. I asked him when he goes to the market to pick me up a frog for my daughter. He got me 3! All 3 were about $1.75 total. One or two will go back in a swamp close by I guess. Big frogs though. 3″ or so. Now I got to hazmat up and go buy some crickets and worms.
I’ve loved toads and frogs since I was a little kid. I’ve had some but sadly, I was a stupid kid (around 5) and I took bad care of them. It’s been so many years but I still feel really bad for that. Because of that I’ve always wanted a toad but never gotten another one. Around where I live there’s LOTS of toads and because of that there’s lots of ducks and seagulls, also other predators. Sadly most of them die because of obvious reasons. I’ll try to catch two small ones when they emerge from the water and hopefully take care of them. I have two toads from the wild that were injured when I found them. I have all the necessary items and upgrade them when I can. My one concern is them jumping towards the container walls. They usually stay burrowed during the day and jump at night, but they now have black on their lips from jumping at the container walls. Is there anyway to fix this? Or should I consider other options? Please let me know.
I’m getting my first toad soon, but before I do that I’m getting everything prepared. I was wondering what I should use to clean the toads tank before I put them in? Would normal water work? Should I dechlorinate the water I would use before I clean the tank? Or is there a special mix I should use? This is referring to cleaning the glass of my tank as it is foggy and smudged from the owner before me. Thanks!
When she says they aint very bright she means it. I used to care for wild caught toads before I did garters, but still would occasionally find and catch them even to this day. They are by far some of the dumbest things I have ever kept as a pet, their feeding mechanism is based entirely on seeing movement from something within a size range, so if you stick another toad in the same enclosure that is in that size range, its not up to debate if it would get cannibalized, but *when*. Where I live nowadays, they try to sit still and hide on concrete… which makes them stand out… and don’t move when trucks and cars drive around after dark. It isn’t uncommon to leave the house in the morning and noticing that the roads in a lot of areas are speckled with flattened “Houston Pancakes” that were not there yesterday afternoon.
Great article! Have a question. We have a tadpole that we rescued from a puddle and turned into a small froglet or baby toad 2 days ago. The tadpole tail disappeared 2 days ago. We think is a baby toad instead of frog because it spends all time outside the water. Question: What can we feed I at this stage? It is very tiny about 1 cm in size. The distance between the eyes is probably 5 mm at the most. Is fruit flies the only thing they can eat? Crickets are too big for it as well as worms. Can I add a piece of apple in the container where the baby toad is to attract fruit flies? Thank you.
i went camping when i was around 7 and two american toads jumped in our pot we were about to put over the fire so i kept it and brought it home named him toady and i kept him for 3 years without ever researching and im surprised he last that long all we gave him was a log hide and a little bath/water dish and fed him crickets every now and then
I’ve got an American toad that I dug up by accident when moving my day lilies….so I took him around to the front garden and put him under a toad abode pot I have with a broken hole on it. It’s been weeks and he’s all over the garden at night 😂. He comes onto my porch…which takes 6 large steps up to get to and then he goes back out on his own. The first few times I saw him up here I took him off because I didn’t want him to get stuck. It’s screened in. Each time I take him off he comes back….so I finally realized he’s hunting under my light. When the bugs fall due to the light bulb he eats them 😂. We put them in front of him and he eats them.
I keep seeing this article when looking up how to take care of my oak toads, I’ve watched this 5 times now and realized you were talking about American toads(i think 😅) is their care similar? I’ve tried searching it up but it never works. All I really need to know is if you can cohab them, if anyone knows it would be much appreciated😊😀
I have a wild road in my garage. There is no heat in the garage, will it survive the winter. I was using bottled water in a lid top for it to soak in but after perusal this article I will change it to well water. He will soak in the water while I am in the garage but he will hop off if I get near him. I named him Harry and talk to him when I am out there.
Question, do I need to rinse the dirt off the worms I feed my toads? I feed them regular fishing bait earthworms, and I dunno if the dirt has preservatives or anything in it so, so far I’m rinsing their worms. P.S. It makes so much sense now why toads will get so sick when they get trapped in a pool! If they need dechlorinated tap water, imagine how much chlorine is in pool water, yikes!
I have been “adopted” by a wild toad who is sneaking in to eat my cat’s canned food at night. I noticed this toad really keeps an eye out for me. I am surprised how intelligent toads are, I never observed one close by like this one. That toad makes sure it knows where I am, looks at me like I am a giant out of a fairytale.
I have 3 toads and 1 frog they are all wild but for a reason one of the toads is blind, ones REALLY overweight like to the point he couldn’t move, and the other one doesn’t have use of her back legs and the frog only has 3 legs so I have a reason for having these wild toads and frog and they are the best they are super funny and also really cute(in my opinion).

So I have a creek in my back yard, will that work for the toads or no? also I dont have a water container/bowl so should I just like get a mini bowl or like get some clay pack it down and do that? My container is also plastic as she said I used it for some of my plastic army men. should I like clean it with creak water? And plus I dont have any good water for the toads besides creek water.
HELP! Question…I have a toad I rescued from a car dealership parking lot. I took him home and set up a tank. Had him about about a year and he dug a hole I assume to hibernate. Then he came out after a while. Soon he Hibernated again during the winter of 2023 & it’s now April 2024 and he has not come out. I’m getting concerned and wondering what’s going on..whether he died while buried or will he come out eventually?
i live in missouri i have these windows to my basement with like metal around them on the outside well i have two toads in one of these metal window enclosures they have been there for idk maybe 2 or 3 years now i recently started to take care of them and feed them because they were getting like skin and bones theres just no bugs getting to them i had no idea i was supposed to feed them every other or couple of days ive been catching roaches every night and feeding the toads three times a day everyday i guess thats not good i want to order the dirt and moss and stuff for them if anyone reads this could you give me some ideas of where to order from or if amazon is ok i love this article by the way excellent job thank you
I LOVE toads. I used to catch them all the time when I was a kid, they were not even the size of my thumb and we lived in jersey. It was catch and release, as much as I wanted to keep then as pets I always felt guilty and released them after a few minutes. Toads are my favorite amphibians! I’ve always wanted one as a pet but I get nervous cause I’ve always seen them as wild animals so I never looked into keeping them as pets. Are toads social? Should I only have one or two per encloser? Oh and do I need to provide enrichment through like toys, also should I give the live prey? Oh and what if I did get two, are they territorial. Like does anyone know if I can house two males in one encloser? Or would they fight, cause I would much rather just care for one toad.
I got my toes from the wild they’re just little babies when I got him where is what we mainly did is we made this container outside put a bunch of lights on in the night and they would come up to the lights and get ready to eat and when it was time then they’ll go outside and eat the Flies and stuff they got in the light
3:55 If I ever get a toad or other amphibian I’m probably going to use the water in the stream out side my house I definitely know other frogs and toads were there cuz I can hear them all night in the summer months all I hear is croaking all the time also I assume that it’ll be full of minerals cuz it comes for an underground spring
I have two Colorado River toads that haven’t been eating to exactly that I’ve been expecting them to as they haven’t been eating the night crawlers I’ve gotten them.. I plan to give them both a warm calcium bath later today but now I’m at a weird crossroads on whether I just need to give them a different food source and give them the bath and maintain their enclosure again or to take them to a vet(which I don’t think there are any vets that specialize in amphibians near me). What is your advice in investigating on what’s wrong with them?
I know this article is old but would it benefit more to feed juveniles night crawlers or meal worms or wax worms. I’m new to toad care but have had multiple reptiles in general. So I’m Not completely lost in sense of general care but feeding them is kind of tough. The younger of two won’t eat much even if separate from the older one. Any tips on any of that?
Is it ok to house an older bigger American toad with a baby American toad? I found a baby two days ago and made a beautiful home for him/ her. While my husband was walking our dogs he found an older bigger American toad and brought him inside. I have them separated for now, but I would like to know if the size and age difference matter. Hi! I wanted some advices about toads 🙂 I just found 3 little common toads they are 1-2cm big I made a terrarium like the one you made, but what do they eat? I gave them ants but they don’t seem interested at all :/ idk if maybe they still have a little tail cause I can’t really tell so they still don’t eat or it’s because of the ants, also they eat only living things or dead one are good too?
