In Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale, the symbols of femininity, the past, and Offred’s lost freedom to control her appearance are explored. Mirrors symbolize the removal of personal identity among the handmaids, as they are denied clear self-recognition. Offred longs for a dandelion, a reminder of the old world, while Serena’s perfume, Lily of the Valley, represents rebellion against society’s elimination of vanity and purity.
Flowers are often considered symbols of beauty or fertility, but in The Handmaid’s Tale, they are given special attention as objects that can bloom and grow at a time when few women are allowed to read. Offred and Ofglen pass the clothing store called Lilies of the Field, which has an image instead of a sign, because reading is illegal for women. This document summarizes the symbolic meanings associated with various flowers, such as tulips, dandelions, and dried flowers that represent the people Offred, the central character and narrator, and the change in their relationships as they blossom.
The color red appears throughout the novel, most strikingly as the color of the handmaids’ dresses, which can symbolize blood. The irises, tulips, dandelions, and dried flowers represent the people Offred is associated with and the change in their relationships as they blossom. Flowers are primarily used to represent beauty, love, fragility, and fertility, traits often associated with women.
In summary, the symbols in Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale provide deeper insights into the dystopian depiction of power and the themes of femininity, the past, and the loss of freedom.

What are the lilies in the Handmaids Tale?
The establishment where handmaids procure attire is designated as Lilies of the Field, a moniker that alludes to a biblical verse wherein Jesus exhorts his disciples to redirect their attention from mundane concerns such as clothing to the natural world and the lilies of the field.
What does the dandelion literally represent?
The dandelion, a weed with a name derived from the French term dents-de-lion, symbolizes hope, healing, and resilience in various cultures worldwide. With thirty different species, including the Taraxacum officinale in North America, the plant’s flowers, leaves, and roots are edible and have been used in various dishes since ancient times. The dandelion’s nectar attracts bees and other insects, making it difficult to suppress and regenerating quickly.
The dandelion has a tap root and hollow stems, each developing basal leaves and a single head. Its bloom is bright yellow and resembles the sun, and its flower head morphs into a star-like orb with individual fruits called cypselae ringed by feathery white hairs called pappi. As the fruits mature, the stalk lengthens, holding up a white moon-like puff ball.
The dandelion has inspired countless aesthetic, literary, and musical pursuits, and is still fresh today. This exhibition, curated by Elizabeth Chubbuck Weinstein, features nineteen contemporary artists and one AI, representing a variety of new and traditional media, aiming to provide an uplifting and thought-provoking respite.

Why is Aunt Lydia so evil?
Aunt Lydia, a woman who displays misogynistic tendencies, evinces a degree of empathy for the predicament of other women under a patriarchal system. She not only enforces this system but also frequently expresses sentiments that are harmful to women, similar to those expressed by Serena Joy.

What are the symbols in the Handmaids Tale?
The Handmaid’s Tale is a novel that explores themes of power, sexuality, and femininity. The color red, associated with shame and fertility, is constantly present in the novel. The Eye, filled with eyes, symbolizes paranoia, surveillance, and Gilead’s authority. Offred, a character, worries about anyone she meets who might be influenced by the Eyes. Makeup, a symbol of power and sexuality, signifies femininity, the past, and Offred’s lost freedom to control her appearance. However, others, like the Commander, believe that the lack of makeup is a sign of weakness. The novel explores themes of shame, surveillance, and the consequences of one’s actions.
What do dandelions symbolize in the Handmaids Tale?
The color yellow, unlike blue and red, is crucial in composing the three-primary colors, just like the flower dandelion in Offred’s life. The dandelion symbolizes her daughter, bringing warmth and happiness to her family. The narrator recalls happy moments with her daughter, making rings, crowns, and necklaces from them. The color of a dandelion, “yellow as the sun”, brings happiness and warmth, just like the birth of her daughter brings happiness to her family.
However, when the flowers turn into “tiny parachutes”, they are blown away and nowhere to find. Offred misses her daughter and longs for one sight of her again to ensure her life. When attending “salvaging”, she sees a dandelion in front of her, which could be a sign of her pregnancy or her desire to have another baby. The color of the dandelion also suggests that she might be pregnant, as it is “egg yolk” compared to the “yellow as sun” color.
Dried flowers are mentioned at least four times, mostly in the sitting room and once in the garden, as a decoration on either end of the mantelpiece. The dried flower represents the past while the daffodils present.
What does Serena Joy’s garden symbolize?
Serena Joy’s garden, featuring red tulips, symbolizes fertility. However, she is infertile and unable to have children, rendering the garden a significant yet ironic setting for cultivating flowers.
Is dandelion a metaphor?
The dandelion narrative functions as a compelling metaphor for dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), underscoring the importance of resilience, adaptability, and the ability to navigate opposing forces.
📹 Lily- Alan Walker-Animatic
This is my first animatic, I don’t have a lot of knowledge in video editing or animation, so it served more as a test. I really like this …
The article reached 5 million views!! thank you all. When I posted it last year I didn’t think it would go this far, even a thousand views seemed impossible back then 😅 I already have the music for part three, it will be a song by alan waker. But before I start working on it, I will be releasing two more shorts that will connect the two articles. *I put subtitles in English and Portuguese in this article. *Eu coloquei legendas em inglês e em português neste article.
I love that in this animation, the “monster” was not seen as a danger to the little girl or someone who wanted to harm her, he was seen as a friend for her…Even though he had an obscure gift in one of his hands, he didn’t want to hurt her, and that makes him a protector who doesn’t know how to control his evil power… I really loved it, it’s very beautiful!❤️
bro he totally didn’t deserve to be left alone in the end. he just wanted someone to be with him because he was lonely and she should’ve helped him control his evil powers and given him a second chance! and he was also that nice that he sent her home in the end without even tricking her! such a nice edit too. the animation was great and story was soo gripping. please post part 2!!!!!
Hello guys!!! Thank you so much for all the likes, subscribers and comments, I’m very happy that you like my article 🥰 update I don’t know if I managed to make it clear in the articles, but I like to play with the meaning of the music and with the scenes shown, sometimes they have the complete opposite meaning of some part of the music, like in this song and in the short fish in the bird cage. I already posted the second part of this animatic: youtube.com/watch?v=CWe8MpBUEPQ thank you 🤩
Continuation: The girl went back to her village and she noticed that her parents were no longer there.. Nobody looked after her. Tho she was afraid of the guy first but she couldn’t forget the time she spent with him.. The magic and love he showered her with that she had never felt her whole entire life in castle walls.. She regrets leaving him like that and wants to return to him. She goes back to the forest but as she was searching, she couldn’t find him anywhere and the one who kept her in castle found her and wanted to kidnap her. She saw her whole life being flashed front of her eyes.. The thing she regretted wasn’t that she had to go back but the fact that she had to break him off like that leaving an irreparable scar in his heart.. She realized that she shouldn’t have done so to him.. Even tho the time she spent with him was short, it was definitely her best moments till that day.. as she started to feel sad and cry.. The guy comes in and uses the curse in his hand to kill the ppl who wanted to kidnap her again.. then as soon as he’s done, he wants to leave but the girl holds on his hand and looks up at him with tearful eyes.. The guy can’t help but stare at her in that situation.. Then the girl apologizes for everything she did.. She was at fault.. Even tho he may have that curse, she still loves him as he loved her even tho he didn’t know her.. She said that without him by her side, there’ll always be a missing piece in her life.. The guy hearing this tears up and hugs her tightly.
Lily was a little girl Afraid of the big, wide world She grew up within her castle walls Now and then she tried to run And then on the night with the setting sun She went in the woods away So afraid, all alone They warned her, don’t go there There’s creatures who are hiding in the dark Then something came creeping It told her, don’t you worry just Follow everywhere I go Top over the mountains or valley low Give you everything you’ve been dreaming of Just let me in, ooh Everything you want in gold, I’ll be the magic story you’ve been told And you’ll be safe under my control Just let me in, ooh Just let me in, ooh She knew she was hypnotized And walking on cold thin ice Then it broke, and she awoke again Then she ran faster than Start screaming, “Is there someone out there?” Please help me Come get me Behind her, she can hear it say Follow everywhere I go Top over the mountains or valley low Give you everything you’ve been dreaming of Just let me in, ooh Everything you want in gold, I’ll be the magic story you’ve been told And you’ll be safe under my control Just let me in, ooh Just let me in, ooh Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh Everything you want in gold, I’ll be the magic story you’ve been told And you’ll be safe under my control Just let me in, ooh Follow everywhere I go Top over the mountains or valley low Give you everything you’ve been dreaming of Just let me in, ooh Then she ran faster than Start screaming, “Is there someone out there?” Please help me Just let me in, ooh~~~~ (PLEASE LIKE THIS TOOK ME LIKE ONE HOUR TO MAKEEEE

The art, the characters, the timings, IT ALL IS SO GOOD! I can’t imagine how good the coloured version can be, I just wish you will be able to upload the coloured version. This is so creative and you have such a good talent of arts, nobody can draw better than this. The thumbnail makes me think how good the coloured version can be, but im not forcing you, I’m just shook how people can be so talented like you!

Omfg… That’s so beautiful I- I can even express it! It’s not a song used very often for animatics, but you made it fit so perfectly, the art style and the way that the story is told is just amazing! Also, talking about the storyline, I loved the fact that the “creature” of the forest chose to just respect her and not just let her go, but guide her, that’s just so sweet! I’ve read in another comment that you’ll be doing a part two, so you have a new sub here! I’m really looking forward to it! Good job in this art piece, I hope it gets the recognition it deserves =D
hello ✋ I am an Arab guy. I liked your drawing and the way you moved the story as well as making it blend with Alan Walker’s most beautiful song (Lily). This is the first time I see his song translated in this way through animation. Although in my mind I imagined it that way. Thank you for your effort and I will follow you to see upcoming creations in the future. 👍❤️
Oh wow. I love this song. Good job on the drawings and visuals. I think you could do this for the entire Different World album if you really wanted to. The guy reminds me of Phantom of the Opera. That is cool. I guess that makes Lily the Christine. I love the Phantom of the Opera musical. I swoon over Eric and his music of the night.
Lily represents all of us in a way. We do wrong things and let the evil in us get to our hearts because of greed. Greed blinds us and we believe everything evil has promised to give us. The promises are nothing, but lies wrapped up in beautiful and fictional truths. The kindness is nothing but a facade as we see the guy smirk at the end. Anyways, beautiful animation! You perfectly highlight this message throughout the animation.

Omg, it’s one of the most beautiful things I have ever watched, I don’t know how to explain it because I have no words to say🦋✨️. I am just speechless, no matter whatever compliments I give it won’t be enough for this incredibly made artwork I just totally loved it ❣️You are just amazing and you are doing a wonderful job so keep going 😊 and I will be eagerly waiting for the next part I’m just impatient and excited for it. 💜💜💜
This anime artwork is precious ❤ it gives a different interpretation & made me emotional 😭😭 Last part … I feel so sorry about him…He is not bad and he is also an average personality in this society. I wish one day she will realize it and come back to him & accept him as he is. Thank you for creating this 🌹best wishes for your future works.
The story in the song is told by a completely different way from the original and honestly, I love your version and makes me really wonder: Who are “creatures hiding in the dark” really? Is that the Monster guy? Or her parents? We don’t know, but at least, under the Monster’s control, Lily really had genuine smiles, she was really happy ….. Waiting for part 2!! <3
I LOVE THIS SO MUCH!!!!! Rather than attempting to share my long theories about the plot imma just watch it 20 more times 😊 But also I gotta gush about how much I love these two💖💖 Their movement was perfectly animated. Their montage was adorable. And the way he uses magic is perfect!! I love these two so much ❤
I always knew the monster wasn’t so bad after all. The singer’s emotion in the line “Just let me in oh” proves it. And I never thought this monster could be so handsome! Keep up the good work buddy! Your good work is much appreciated. And thanks a lot for bringing my imagination to reality as it’s a lot similar to mine.

I am a fan of the drawings and the song, and I am learning to draw anime. I drew it because it is crazy. I loved coordinating the drawings with the song. I think you are an artist. I wish I could be yourself and open a website like your content. If it happens, it will be because of your inspiration. I heard the song about 50 times.
“A hand of creation love and affection” “Another hand of Death” “He was ment to be the guardian angel of everything, and take peoples lifes when it was over to give them a peaceful death” “But people thought he was a monster who wanted to kill all” “People restricted themselves to thier houses and kids stoped playing with him,Adults ignored him, olds were scared of him when the olds time was over they thought he killed him” “But he was the angel of god and guardian of everything his only work was to give people what they want and when their time comes take them to the kingdom of Heavenly father” “He was kind he didnt want his life to be this but god had other plans” “Legends says when he finds his true love he would become human again” “Amen”
