What Are Calla Lily Pods Made Of?

Calla Lilies are beautiful flowers that grow from a rhizome and produce large green leaves covered with lighter spots. The fastest way to propagate Calla Lilies is from the tuber, which contains enough food and growing centers. Calla lily seed pods are small, green, and shiny, about the size of a pencil eraser, containing as many as 100 or more seeds. They may be solitary or grouped in spikes or clusters.

The spadix, typically golden yellow or matches the spathe in color, produces small seed pods after flowering. The seeds grow in pods found in trumpet-like flowers. Each mature Calla Lily produces tan seed pods, each containing from one to five seeds. When the flowers die at the start of winter, they leave a pod-like capsule filled with calla lily flower seeds.

Some gardeners have asked if it is possible to harvest the seed pods after the stems of these plants had rotted off. One question is whether the stems of these plants had rotted off, so the seed pods were separated anyway. However, there is a tuber just under the soil surface that gets larger every year and makes little tubers that can be broken off. After the pods mature, collect the seed, let them dry, and pot them up in a good seeding mix. Keep the soil moderately moist and out of direct sunlight. Most Calla lilies have drooping pods in place of the flower bloom this year, with seed-like balls filling them.
