The Olmec civilization, the first elaborate pre-Columbian civilization of Mesoamerica (c. 1200–400 BCE), was a significant cultural and artistic florescence in the Gulf Coast states of Veracruz and Tabasco in Mexico between 1200 and 400 B.C. The Olmec were great artists and traders who dominated early Mesoamerica from their mighty cities of San Lorenzo and La Venta. Their culture was greatly influential on later societies, such as the Aztecs, who worshipped sunflowers and placed gold-plated images in their temples.
The Olmec culture was also known for its gardens, where they would grow medicinal herbs and small crops, such as sunflowers. The Great Pyramid in La Venta, Tabasco, is a significant example of the Olmec culture. The origins of sunflowers can trace their roots to the soils of Mexico, and the Olmec site of La Venta, a 34-meter-tall pyramid, dates back to 1000 BC.
In other parts of the world, such as Peru, the Aztecs worshipped sunflowers and placed gold-plated images in their temples. Unequivocal representations of maize and sunflower are rare in Olmec iconography and well-preserved archaeological deposits, but centuries-old dried remains of sunflower seed-containing fruits have been discovered in offerings at the main Aztec Templo Mayor site in Mexico.
In North American history, sunflowers have been mentioned in various ways, including in the Aztec Templo Mayor site in Mexico.

Did the Olmecs worship the sun?
The Olmec Dragon, also known as the Earth Monster, was a commonly depicted deity in their culture. Other gods included the Bird Monster, Shark Monster, Banded-Eye God Little, Maize God, Water God, Were-Jaguar, and Feathered Serpent. Each god had a unique role in the Olmec civilization, with the Maize God being dedicated to crop production and growth. The Water God worked closely with the Maize God, dealing with all forms of water in their belief.
The Were-Jaguar was a human baby with feline qualities and a cleft in its head, possibly dead or asleep. The Feathered Serpent had an influence on later Mesoamerican societies with similar gods. Religion played a significant role in the culture of the Chavin Cult, which was centered around their religion and practice. The Old Temple, the center of their practice, was expanded and remolded into the New Temple, both serving as sites for events and religious practices.
Throughout the temples, stone sculptures of half human and animal heads symbolized priest’s transformation and were connected to their ancient gods. The central stone carving of the main Chavin deity, known as the Lanzon, is central to their temple. Archaeological evidence of the Chavin religion includes shells turned into instruments, bones, tubes, and other materials depicting images of shamanistic transformation.
In summary, the Olmec Dragon, Bird Monster, Shark Monster, Banded-Eye God, Maize God, Were-Jaguar, and Feathered Serpent were all significant figures in the Olmec civilization.
Do Olmecs still exist?
The Olmecs, thought to have vanished between 900 and 1200 CE, are postulated to have been vanquished by militaristic civilizations such as the Aztecs, which has given rise to a number of hypotheses regarding their ultimate fate.
What is the Mayan sacred bird?
The Resplendent Quetzal Pharomacrus mocinno was a significant cultural force for the Maya and Aztec Indians of Central America for centuries. Quetzalcoatl, the cultural force for good, was symbolized by the head of a serpent adorned with the feathers of a Resplendent Quetzal. The rulers of both cultures required tributes and head-dresses made of quetzal tail-streamers, but killing one was considered sacred. According to Aztec legend, Quetzalcoatl was supposed to return as god-king in 1519.
When the Spanish conquistador Cortez sailed into Vera Cruz harbor in 1519, Montezuma sent him a magnificent head-dress of quetzal plumes as a gift. At the height of the Aztec empire, five provinces in cloud-forest were compelled to furnish tributes in the form of 2, 480 “bunches” or “handfuls” of mostly tail-streamers from Resplendent Quetzals. This would have meant a harvest of 6, 200-31, 000 Resplendent Quetzals per year.
Quetzalcoatl’s association with the Mayan god Kukulcan has been recently highlighted by the claim that the pyramid at Chichen Izta, Mexico, was constructed in such a manner that sharp sounds made inside it produce an echo of a handclap that mimics the call of the Resplendent Quetzal. This idea has been greeted with skepticism, but echoes were often associated with spirits and the central importance of the quetzal in Mayan beliefs make it plausible that the pyramid-builders deliberately included such a device as a further means of totemising the species.
What did the Olmecs plant?
The Olmec, a group of ancient humans, primarily engaged in agricultural activities outside their villages, primarily in fields cleared using slash-and-burn techniques.
Did the Olmecs sacrifice humans?
Archaeological evidence indicates that the Olmec people were known to have engaged in human sacrifices.
What animal did the Olmec believe to be the most powerful?
The Olmec, a group of ancient people, adopted the jaguar, a powerful animal, as their main totem due to its physical strength, impressive appearance, and secretive ways. This association with the jaguar may have been influenced by the Olmec’s cult, as evidenced by artifacts from early cultures like the Chavin of Peru and the San Agustin of Colombia.
In many mythologies, animals with anthropomorphic characteristics are often depicted, often with anthropomorphic facial features. The Olmec’s unique representations of humans with zoomorphic characteristics are found in various forms, including sculptures, figurines, masks, bas-reliefs, and pottery decorations. These sculptures were made from a variety of materials, including clay, stone, serpentine, jadite, amethyst, and obsidian. The Olmec aimed to ensure the durability and aesthetic value of their “jaguar-influenced” sculptures, which were primarily found along and near the Gulf Coast area.
Did Olmecs invent anything?
The Olmecs were the first Mesoamerican people to develop an understanding of the concept of zero, to create a calendar, and to develop a hieroglyphic writing system. Additionally, they were the first in the Americas to implement a conduit drainage system. The intellectual achievements, myths, and rituals of the Olmec people had a significant influence on the subsequent development of Maya, Zapotec, Mixtec, and Aztec cultures.
What was the Olmec sacred animal?
The jaguar, a large and formidable animal, was a significant part of religious practice in major Mesoamerican civilizations like the Olmec. Its size, reputation as a predator, and survival abilities made it an important symbol for inhabitants living near tropical jungles. The Olmec and Maya adopted the jaguar as an authoritative and martial symbol, incorporating it into their mythology.
The Maya peoples, a literate society, integrated the jaguar into their sacred and secular realms through their artifacts. These artifacts often depicted the gods they revered, often with jaguar attributes. The jaguar is believed to have the ability to cross between worlds, representing daytime and nighttime as two different worlds. Daytime and nighttime were associated with the living and earth, while the spirit world and ancestors were associated with the night.
Maya gods with jaguar attributes or garments are considered underworld gods. One such god is Xbalanque, one of the Maya Hero Twins who descended to the underworld, covered with jaguar skin. Another god is God L, who is the primary lord of the underworld and often depicted with a jaguar ear or attire.
The underworld is also associated with the ancestors and plants, as well as the source of fresh water from underground cenotes in the Yucatán limestone. These associations reinforce the notion of the jaguar as a god of fertility.
What is the bird monster Olmec?
The Olmec civilization had eight distinct androgynous deities, each with unique characteristics. The Bird Monster, a harpy eagle associated with rulership, and the Olmec Dragon, a flame-eyed dragon, were believed to grant rulers a mandate to lead. Other deities represented natural elements, such as the Maize deity, the Rain Spirit or Were-Jaguar, and the Fish or Shark Monster. Religious activities around these deities likely involved elite rulers, shamans, and priests making offerings at religious sites in La Venta and San Lorenzo.
Were the Olmecs Aztec?
Early modern explorers and archaeologists mistakenly applied the name “Olmec” to rediscovered ruins and artifacts in the heartland of the Gulf lowlands, a region characterized by swampy lowlands, low hills, ridges, and volcanoes. The ancient Olmec were not the Aztecs, but a 2000-year-old culture. Some later Mesoamerican accounts refer to them as “Tamoanchan” or “tenocelome”, meaning “mouth of the jaguar”.
The Olmec heartland, located in the Gulf lowlands, was the site of the first Mesoamerican civilization, which emerged and reigned from c. 1400-400 BCE. The Olmec constructed permanent city-temple complexes at San Lorenzo Tenochtitlán, La Venta, Tres Zapotes, and Laguna de los Cerros.
What is the Olmecs DNA?
In 2018, mitochondrial DNA studies on Olmec remains from San Lorenzo and Loma del Zapote revealed the presence of distinctive mutations in the “A” maternal lineage. This indicates that the maternal ancestry of the Olmecs is not in Africa but in America, as they share the most abundant of the five mitochondrial haplogroups characteristic of indigenous populations of the continent: A, B, C, D, and X.

One of the main problems with understanding the olmec and the maya is that the archeologists are using the wrong start date. The maya never believed in a start date of 3114 BC, but rather 3640 BC. They believed this to be the time of the great flood, as described in their stories and history. By using this as their start date, their dating system begins to make perfect sense.
Modern circuit boards are layered with insulation separating the layers. The patterned serpentine stones sperated by clay in alternating layers smacks of a type of circuit board. Would be nice to know what the pattern of each layer looked like and if there were any stones connecting the layers through the clay. The site location on an island in the middle of a river adds to the running water theme. Very interesting indeed…
Thank you for this. Have been reading up on the Maya in prep for a trip to Southern Mexico and have dug my way back to the mystery of the Olmec. I will be there in September, traveling by rental car, and am wondering if you have any recommendations for Olmec sites to reasonably visit on the road from Oaxaca to Mérida. Planning to stop in Villaheroma for the museum there… any other suggestions for along the way?
He only mentions one head that has 7 braids, also native Americans art is has the theme of exaggerated features. Just cause there’s minimal amount of similarities to other cultures it doesn’t mean they are from the same area, now East Asia does seem to have a lot of similarities with the olmecs so I’m sticking to that.
My first time in this area was 1971-a very different Mexico then–most of the presenters truly don’t know what is still sitting in that area under growth and dirt –perhaps miles of ruins in spots–well worth the trip if you are able but plan to spend months–you won’t find the still remote and covered ruins until u learn the area-
Has anyone given any thought to the fact that the stone that was chosen for the art work could have been a message in it’s self ? My Daughter is an artist and says to me all the time dad look deeper the work is not just in the colors but also in the paint the canvas as well as the frame. Each part has a story and each part is a statement. The level of skill in each part says many different things . Some of the hardest stones known to man … could this be a statement … ya think … ? ! . It could also be a question ? ! . asking through time … ” How would you do this ? what would you use to do this ? ” and in these questions a clue … these are just some thoughts like to hear some of yours … insert here 😉
The different layers of. serpentine stone and clay reminds one of a Reich Organ accumulator Equally I am reminded of a Lyden Jar static electricity accumulator;whereby one roles up a sheet of copper and a sheet of wax into a tube Then again when the mass of the structure comes into consideration,; psi electricity would come into play. That is crystals under pressure generate electricity.
We can’t see the skin colour or the hair type on these heads, so it remains unclear. Furthermore, there are still today native American people with these features, brown-skinned and straight-haired, that live in central America. Take into account also the stylistic flattening of the features that the sculptors employed, which is obviously not exactly life-like.
In the investigations of the San Lorenzo Tenochtitlán Archaeological Project at the sites of San Lorenzo and Loma del Zapote, several human burials from the Olmec period were found. The bone consistency in two of them allowed the study of their mitochondrial DNA to be carried out successfully, as part of an investigation that proposes the comparative analysis of the genetic information of the Olmecs with that obtained from subjects from other Mesoamerican societies under the advice of the specialists Dr. María de Lourdes Muñoz Moreno, Research Professor Department of Genetics and Molecular Biology Center for Research and Advanced Studies of the National Polytechnic Institute (CINVESTAV-IPN), Mexico and Miguel Moreno Galeana, also from CINVESTAV-IPN. This pioneering study of mitochondiral DNA in 2018 was carried out two Olmec individuals, one from San Lorenzo and the other from Loma del Zapote, resulted, in both cases, in the unequivocal presence of the distinctive mutations of the haplogroup A maternal lineage. They share the most abundant of the five mitochondrial haplogroups characteristic of the indigenous populations of the American. black to Africa…and learn ur own history
One misses a civilization that stretched over the whole of Oceania, The lost Civilization of Mu/Lemuria. Its seen in ancients arts from Japan to the West Coast of America and Canada like the Haida. Then everything fits. Also, I predict one day, someone will be able to listen to recordings from the magnetic portion of the brain area of the huge megalithic heads, like their history ( similar to the Droppa Stones of the Himalia’s). The Māori Culture of the Southern Pacific have similar heads looking this fiercely. What about the elongated Easter Islander Moai heads, They too were carved from Basalt.
I believe the heads are of 2 individuals, King David, and his son King Solomon. When the colonists encountered the natives of the americas, they discovered the northern tribes of the lost tribes of Israel.. Solomon being the richest man in the world at the time AND the scriptures mention King Solomon’s men traveling to and fro about the sea.. Though the Bible doesn’t say “america” ( of course it wouldnt ), however it does give the time that it took to travel to a distant land by sea, and “america” hits bullseye.
I am a brown-skinned African-American, and I appreciate the lecturer’s honest presentation of Negroid feautured figures and historical possibilities of them being in Pre-Columbian Central American. I’m so pleased that he didn’t try to hide those facts. I love how he honored the late Dr. Ivan Van Sertima.🤝🏿✊🏿
So sad that he cannot accept the truth. The face is African! No other race has these features. I challenge anyone to point out a Chinese, Caucasion, or any other person besides an African that carry these facial features. If they show you the back of the first head found the hair is in dreeds or braids with beads. So pathetic that he can’t accept it.
Prior to perusal this talk, i should like to say, that there are steady trade winds that run from the East to the West along the equator, and have been consistently doing so, as a result of basic planetary spin, likely, for as long as the Earth has been spinning on this particular axis (giving leeway for slight alterations from the impact of extraterrestrial bodies like comets and asteroids). That is to say, considering that the distance between Africa and South America is not that great. With a decent boat with a strong sail, one could quite easily sail from Africa to South America (Brazil, Guiana, Venezuela, etc.), in as short a time as A WEEK. Considering that much of civilization, and seamanship in Africa goes back, at least, 6,000 years, it is not a stretch of the imagination to expect, over the course of those years, a few enterprising Africans along the coast of Liberia or the Ivory Coast, could throw a sail on their fishing boat and head toward the setting sun. In fact, it is highly likely, if not a certainty, that this happened, multiple times. They would have had a tough time going back (if they wished to do so), but going from East to West along the equator, in a sail boat, was certainly attempted many times by those people, and there were certainly some who survived the trip and landed safely in South America. Keep your minds open ya’ll. History was written by the victors. But the truth is golden.
Can I say as a Mesoamerican my parents born in Mexico your info about origin of the Olmec not being related to North American Native people is incorrect to put nicely . Your correct about being asian as well as the North American Native people also being from the same Asian people or group that crossed over when there was a frozen land bridge all at the same time and as they moved around North America so of them split up and moving far south to Central America becoming the Olmec and that’s been proven to be fact . I won’t show proof of the information because it’s everywhere just look it up on any trusted journal or what not. So please how some respect my ancestors history . This the story of my past ancestors and be corrected or update. Please and thank you oh btw North American Native people DNA matches Latino DNA a lot that shows that we are from the same original explores that crossed over from Asia . Thanks !
At the end of his article he showed a light skin melanated Asiatic person, these people that they call olmecs were more like the aboriginal of Oceania. He had to make himself look important at the end by standing by a light skinned black person. The Asiatic black man come in colors of Midnight black to Albino.
How about we view all megalith structures from a different perspective. Have these heads been subjected to intense heat? Have these heads been petrified by a cataclysmic event, and were they actually carved out of wood? or were they flash petrified in an event when they were live beings? All matter was once an organic material. Over many thousands of years, wood, metal, and any type of material ends up petrified and turned to stone. Just a thought.

ok we have Olmec and Mayans whom resemble a Western African race, now go back to when the continents were ONE continent NW Africa slots in perfect where the gulf of Mexico now resides and this could reasonably answer this question of how why who and yes it is going to go balistic with the time scales but it could also happen to answer the 8 degrees off true North maybe …
