Watering Hyacinth Bulbs?

Growing hyacinths in water is a beautiful way to add color and scent to your home. It can help your hyacinth blooms last for weeks and produce fragrant blooms. To grow hyacinths in water, choose a glass vase specifically designed for forcing bulbs or any clear glass container with a narrow opening. Water the newly planted bulbs thoroughly to help settle the soil and encourage root growth. Proper watering ensures that the bulbs remain moist during their initial growth phase.

Add mulch to the pot. Hyacinths are popular early spring bulbs with sweet-smelling blooms and can be grown outdoors, indoors, or in water. To ensure the best results, follow these steps:

1. Choose a vase: Opt for a glass vase specifically designed for forcing bulbs, as these typically have a narrow neck to support the bulb. Alternatively, any clear glass container with a narrow opening can be used.

2. Water the newly planted bulbs thoroughly to help settle the soil and encourage root growth. Proper watering ensures that the bulbs remain moist during their initial growth phase.

3. Plant hyacinths in containers with proper soil, water, light, and temperature conditions for indoor and outdoor hyacinths.

4. Water hyacinths when the soil feels dryish (rather than moist or damp). Hyacinths are native to warm and dry climates, so they cannot tolerate waterlogging at their roots.

5. Store hyacinth bulbs in a dark area at 35-45º F for 12-14 weeks. Fill a bulb vase with water up to 5mm below the bottom of the bulb and place it in a cupboard or dark place for several weeks until roots and shoots are established.

6. Plant hyacinth bulbs in glass jars or vases without compost. Add water up to the narrow part of the jar or vase to prevent the bulb being completely covered by water.
