Watering a bromeliad plant is crucial for its growth and dormancy. It is recommended to water every 1-2 weeks during the growing season (spring through summer) and every 2-3 weeks during dormancy (fall and winter). Use filtered, distilled water, or rainwater, and allow the soil to dry between waterings. Provide plenty of humidity and flush the tank periodically to prevent stagnation and buildup of mineral salts. Proper drainage is essential, and the soil mix must be porous enough to allow 0.8 cups of water every 12 days.
When potted bromeliads don’t get direct sunlight and are potted in a 5.0″ pot, they need 0.8 cups of water every 12 days. To ensure proper water drainage, choose a pot with drainage holes and follow the soak and dry method. If watering a container, only water when the top two inches of the soil is dry and apply generously until the excess comes out of the bottom of the pot.
Collect rainwater to water your bromeliad plant, if possible, as it doesn’t contain chemicals that can harm them. Most tap water is suitable for growing bromeliads, but avoid using salty or alkaline water. If using tap water in the central cup, refresh the water in the central cup.
Bromeliads like a good watering every month, running water through the planting medium, whether it be moss or bark, and letting it all run out the drain holes. They love high humidity, so misting or spraying once or twice a week is fine. A half cup of water should work if the plant is in a non-drainage container between 5-7″ in diameter.
Watering bromeliads sparingly is essential, as they are epiphytes and don’t need a lot of water.
