The Proper Way To Maintain An Arrowhead Plant?

Arrowhead plants, native to Central and South America, are a popular houseplant with glossy leaves and easy maintenance. They can be grown under shaded jungle canopies and can scorch when exposed to direct sunlight. Proper watering is crucial for the plant, as it keeps the soil moist but not soggy. The plant prefers bright indirect light but can adapt to low light.

To keep the plant healthy and growing, change the water every week or so and use a liquid fertilizer. Water the plant when 50-75 of the soil volume is dry, maintaining 65°F or higher temperatures. Avoid placing arrowheads near air vents or drafty areas.

Fertilizer is essential for the plant’s growth, as it helps prevent root rot and ensures that the soil stays moist. Arrowhead plants do best in bright light with no direct sun, although some tolerate low light. To maintain the plant’s health, change the water every week or so and use a well-balanced organic fertilizer twice a month during active growth (Spring through Summer).

In summary, the arrowhead plant, also known as Syngonium podophyllum, is a tropical evergreen vine with glossy leaves and easy maintenance. It is a great choice for beginners and can be grown indoors or outdoors in various locations. Proper watering, misting, fertilization, and repotting are essential for the plant’s growth and health.

How to care for an Arrowhead Plant?

Arrowhead plants, also known as mottled Syngonium Podophyllum, are popular houseplants known for their beautiful, variegated leaves. They prefer bright, indirect sunlight, which can prevent scorching of the leaves and loss of variegation. To ensure their health and happiness, it is essential to keep them moist but not soggy. A well-draining potting mix is recommended, and they do not need frequent fertilization.

If living in a sunny climate, it may be necessary to relocate the plant to a shadier spot during the hottest part of the day. The top inch of soil should be allowed to dry before watering again, and avoid overwatering to prevent root rot.

What does an overwatered Arrowhead Plant look like?

Arrowhead plants that are subjected to inadequate water levels may develop yellow leaves and brown, brittle margins. Conversely, those that are overwatered may simultaneously display yellow and brown marks, which suggests an imbalance in their growth and development.

The arrowhead plant, a philodendron-related plant, is mildly toxic to humans and animals, causing symptoms like irritated skin, upset stomach, and vomiting. Its leaves resemble long hearts or arrowheads and shed, so be cautious. Lilies, despite their beauty, are toxic to cats, causing vomiting, lethargy, and lack of appetite. The peace lily, also known as Spathiphyllum, is toxic to humans and animals but makes for a great houseplant due to their shade and air purifying qualities. It’s essential to be cautious when handling these plants.

  • Let me tell you a love story between “Romeo” (Arrowhead Plant) and “Juliet” (Golden Pothos). Once my mom placed “Juliet” hanging above “Romeo” in her garden, and believe it or not, both plants started to grow quickly until finally reached them, and after that the leaves started to cross between both of them, that by the time we wanted to separate them we had to cut all the leaves and plant stem crossed. After that happened, my mom started to call them “Romeo and Juliet” because no matter how much you want to separate them, they always find a way to reach again. If you want to do the experiment and see what happens, try placing both plants closer (but not too much) and see if you can make this love story come to live at your home. Sorry for the long comment, but I hope you find interesting.

  • just picked up a rescue clearance syngonium from my local walmart. i knew a tiny tiny bit about them, but was worried i wouldn’t be able to save her and this article totally gave me peace of mind. i’m excited to grow this new plant in my collection! Thank you for your extremely helpful articles!!! i have learned so much in my budding adventure in the plant world from your website!! much love <3

  • saw this plant at safeway sunday night & was about to get it til i checked the soil: BUGS inside 😩😭 so came home & went on etsy. low & behold your store popped up & i snatched it 😂 now it’s on my way to me (according to tracking) & i’m sooo excited, so now i’m studying this plant before its arrival! thanxxxx for this article, love your store! 🌿💚🍃

  • I got one as a gift back in 95 and still have it all these years later . I’ve moved several times since then and have lost a couple of the offspring but they are tough, that’s for sure . I made a 55 gallon terrarium for my rough skinned newts which has these plants,Ludwigia,Rotala Indica to name a few and this plant took off and started to try to grow out of the tank . Anyway great info for those who don’t know about this plant .👍✌😸

  • Your lax take on propagating makes me feel soooo much better. I used to be a plant killer. I killed lucky bamboo (root rot I think). I became interested again in plants when I saw a pothos thriving in the dungeon I work in (cubicles, basement, no real light). I took a few cuttings from that (BEYOND LEGGY) pothos, my hairstylist gifted me a cactus which I am unable to identify (but he has lived over a year but not grown much if at all). On mother’s day, my green thumb mother gifted me what looks like an aloe with white lines on it, and also a jade plant (which while being a toddler itself has two babies). I have been watering using the blue powder miracle gro plant food WAYYYY diluted. All the plants seem happy. Again, we get no true sun just fluorescent bulbs but I leave them on all the time for my bbs. My friend has propagated a lot of plants for me. I want to take them to my office, but also my home porch (depending on where I place the plants, they would get late evening full or partial sun, or full shade). I’m interested in starting an herb garden but don’t know if I can with my situation. I have a housecat so no indoor plants. I am so enjoying growing and NOT KILLiNG the plants I have! It makes me so happy! Aside from my cat, they are my babies. I want to have a green thumb so badly!!!!!! Thank you for your articles! They are entertaining AND informative!!!!!! Love you!!!! [email protected] if you feel like offering any advice I’d appreciate it so much

  • These are obviously related to wild Arrowhead plants that we have growing profusely here in NJ. I wonder if I could grow one of those in water in my home?! Also have you done or could you do a article on pest control? All of your articles are extremely helpful! Especially for those without the time or inclination to dive into plant collecting head first!! ☺

  • Hi, Harli G.!! I love your articles with your chickens (and eggs) your spaniel and your cute boys, not to mention your plants!!😂👍 I had an arrowhead plant for about 20 years. Don’t know what variety. It was my husband’s favorite plant. Since he passed away 12 years ago, I’ve taken extra good care of it. Before I moved back to Colorado last Dec. I gave a good friend a nice plant I propagated!! All my larger plants and some smaller ones froze on the moving truck. After a month or so I cut everything back. A couple months later, maybe March, I got two leaves growing from the cutoff stem of my old plant. It now has about 10 leaves and is 6-7 in. tall! But it looks totally different, more like your white butterfly!!?? I have also started collecting syngoniums and have 19. Most are different varieties, but my frustration is why one kind will have 3 or 4 different names and you think you have different varieties but as they mature you can tell they are the same variety!! So I may have 12 or 13 different ones,!!😂😂 Thanks for your informative and entertaining articles!!😊

  • You should add fresh water to your cuttings every day to put air in the water. It helps cuttings grow roots much faster. I’ve done this with the wondering jew plant I have and i had roots in about a week and a half. With the golden pothos plant, those cuttings will take longer to get roots than the wondering jew plant. But It helped both plants a lot!

  • I also love Arrowhead plants, there are so many different varieties, I have the maria, the strawberry and there is another pink variety, the name escapes me. My best friend and I have girl weekends and the next weekend we are heading to Utah, we usually hit up Ikea, and now since I’m such a plant freak we are hitting every nursery that we possibly can, So excited for that, thanks to you and your Mom for your nursery plant tours. Great article, lots of tips and information, see you in your next one, bye for now.

  • Ur my favorite go to plant girl lol. I love all ur tips and u get so excited for new plants. I’m a beginner plant mom lol I’ve already learned so much from ur website. I also love how u go around ur house and if some plants need a lil watering or a yellow leave ur just like ” it’s fine” hahah. U make looking after plants seem so easy!!

  • I only have one syngonium but I LOVE it. It’s so easy to care for and it grows so fast. I constantly find myself splitting the roots and making more to go in different areas of my house. I have a few that I REALLY want but honestly houseplants are very limited in my area unfortunately and I hate ordering plants online because I have terrible luck 🙃 but I’m obsessed.

  • My mom gave me a flower arrangement with arrowhead in it when my baby was born eight months ago. It was pretty seriously neglected for a bit there because I was a bit preoccupied with the human baby and I figured the plants in the arrangement would all die, but three of the four of them managed to pull through and now I’m researching so I can better take care of them.

  • I have the pink illusion variety, a friend of mine gave the root bulb. At the time I didnot have a pot handy so I placed it in a plastic bucket with no drainage hole(I had no idea about plants then),kept it in a indirect bright light area. Since the container does not have drainage hole and my mom over waters plants in general, the soil has never been dry and it usually has 1 or 2 mm water stagnent above the soil most days. But it is the most Plushiest arrowhead plant I have than the other ones I have, and maintain properly. This plant even has large leaves, larger than my whole face . I really dont know how the plant thrives for more than 3 years in the same container, not been fertilised even once in that 3 year period.

  • My arrowhead was my first plant! I remember the shock, horror, then awe after I repotted it and accidentally ripped a leaf off years ago and I was so upset and my friend told me to just stick the leaf back in the soil and it propagated by itself. I legitimately had no idea about plant propagation until that happened and now I have 3 of them in my house haha. Great article!

  • Hello young lady, I absolutely love your articles, I believe I posted in a couple of them previously. You have so much information and you have fun with it. I just love your attitude! I have had quite a few syngonians and I adore them, but I find that they thrive for a decent amount of time then die. My confetti is still holding on quite well although I need to make it bushier, and I have a I think you call it a white vein, it’s green with white veins that I bought not too long ago. I have the green one with white veins in a medium light I turn it every day so it gets a share of brighter light, but my confetti doesn’t seem to like it anywhere. And that’s one of my favorite plants. I have about 20 to 30 plants and quite a few propagations. Because the confetti’s syngonium is in a medium light now I think I should move it to a brighter area? I live in an apartment I only have North facing windows. It is now the end of November and it’s getting quite cold so none of my plans are near the window. And I don’t want to move them around a lot, I really love my confetti I can’t say that enough, please help! Of course you could always send me a nice size one too for Christmas! LOL LOL! See I do that stuff because I’m disabled and I can’t afford a lot, but it’s also my six sense of humor so please don’t take that seriously. I started doing plants again after I couldn’t work anymore, I think I got my green thumb for my grandma even though I’m adopted. Then again she was Irish I think I got her temper too, which keeps me going.

  • Hello Harli, I’m excited to let you know that I did have some houseplants but after perusal your articles I now have adopted 27 more….. my mom had a green thumb and so i have I been influenced by her and you. Please let me know at what point do I repot the seguonias? Do I transfer them on a ceramic pot with a drainage plate or do I leave them in their nursery plastic pot? I also have a huge Peace Lilly that I separated into two in ceramic pots, one is perfect and the other my mom repotted, one of the stems is not doing so good. Do I just put them back in the plastic pot this Spring? Thank you for your time in reading my 10 page question. Sure appreciate you beautiful. By the way your baby is soooo beautiful. Congratulations

  • Thx for your care article! I learned from you that I have a pink Singhsnia. I received a cutting off a dying plant and thankfully, after about 3 months, I have 6 very nice, strong, happy leaves. I wasn’t sure what soil to use so I used succulent soil and planted it in a recycled spaghetti sauce can that I nailed holes in the bottom of. Again, thx, I enjoy perusal your helpful articles. God bless’ ✌🏽☀️😊🌱🌵

  • I take cuttings too…in fact I’m out of control! I take cuttings of literally anything I see that is pretty and/or worth saving and stuff it in a water jug like yours and see how it goes. I even take cuttings from shopping centre plantings! My colleague gave me a graptophyllum leaf cutting recently and it had just developed roots after 3 weeks from both stem AND leaves which saved when I nude the stem cuttting…ooh so proud! I’m glad I’m not then only nut out there… 🤗

  • I grow arrowhead plant a lot! Note I am located in south east Texas where temps get to 110* in summer time and freeze in winter! I have had some growing in a flowerbed outside for years. It freezes back in winter and returns from roots in summer!! I also have some in a vase inside that has lived in water for years! I give water as it evaporates and once a month I give 2 drops of Miracle Grow House plant food and it is gone Crazy! I have to cut back and propagate a lot because it grows so fast! I am good at sharing though!!

  • I found your article by accident when I was Googling care tips for Arrowhead plants, as yesterday my daughter gave me a small pink one, which I had commented on. Love your article, very clear and easy to follow. It’s the podophyllum variety, but the veins are not the deep pink that I expected. Maybe they will become more pronounced, once the plant becomes bigger? Can you please do a article on how to propagate these (and any other indoor plants) please. Thanks

  • Thanks dear, good information, thanks for sharing, I also have many plants but with that I have adopted 🐶🐩🐶🐩🐶🐩🐶🐶🐶 also and they love digging all the pots and chewed many of my plants, that’s very painful, they damaged my guava and lemon plants both were full of tiny fruits on them, but can’t help it, we love them a lot, making a higher place now for plants to protect them from these naughty pooches 😀

  • I have a syngonium erythrophylum and I love it! The top of the leaves are dark green and the bottom of the leaves are deep red. Definitely a vining syngonium. I keep it in a east facing window that gets filtered light and it grows like crazy! I’m thinking of propagating it soon, but I really don’t want to cut it.

  • I was so excited to see this article pop up in my subscription feed! I find it so difficult to find high quality articles about arrowhead plant care, so thank you for this ❤️ I’ve been trying to propagate some cuttings from an arrowhead plant in water for about two weeks now, but I don’t seem to be having much luck… some of the leaves are browning and no roots are appearing. Do you have any advice for water propagation with arrowheads?

  • We just got back from a local nursery and there is an arrowhead plant on sale for 75% off because it does look sick. I keep thinking about it and am going back tonight for a ladies plant night 😁😁. Im going to be tempted to buy it. My question is, what can i do to save this plant? He just looks a bit discolored.

  • Hi Harli, love love loved this. 🤗 Just today I got a wee rooted cutting of syngonium wendlandii and last month, syngonium red arrow. Both gorgeous but the red arrow has almost black leaves and I’m besotted. My pink has started vining and I’m going to do what you suggest to keep her bushy. You have some amazing types,my wish list just grew. Great tips🌺Big smiles, Tish.

  • I know its like a year later but if you still have your pink Syngonium I have found putting it in a pot 1 size larger than you’d normally put it in makes it happy, even a bigger than that pot works, it seems to like to really fill up it’s pot, mine burst growth-wise when I moved it into a pot 2 times what I’d normally put a pothos or fern in

  • I love syngonium so much. I had a white butterfly for a few years, planted it in a huge pot pretty deep because it had gotten very lanky and it exploded with growth. I added a confetti in with it and now is a huge overflowing 12″ that loves living in the bathroom. I trim it back and just stick them in the soil to root. Amazing plants!

  • I am going to a plant sale tomorrow hoping to pick up one of their arrowhead variegata. They also have two other plants on my Wishlis, calathea white fusion and stromanthe tricolour but I’m scared to pick up either because I understand they’re very high maintenance, especially the calathea. I got a golden Pothos and spider plant today, also have a monsters deliciosa and golden cane palm, both doing well but not growing much due to not much light in my bedroom

  • I just won a total of 7 plants at a church event and 2 of those are for sure arrowheads. I had them outside and they are now shriveling up and discoloring. I’m moving them inside but I have no window available with direct light. I live in an apartment, and my living room window has the TV in front of it. My bedroom window has the headboard of my bed in front of it and my kid’s room is the same way. Does it do well in low light?. Another one that I won looks kind of like that one but only has one leaf and a straight stem right next to it.

  • i don’t know why, but i keep on rewatching this vid 😂 i think bc i am an arrowhead girl. I own two kinds of arrowhead plant, one variegated syngonium auritum and two syngonium wendlandii. Both are doing so well, they are moderately fast growers in my care, and i think both kinds are starting to trail? Anyway, i just learned the reason now why my auritum is yellowing thru this vid, bc i forgot to water her XD Such a helpful vid, really. 😘

  • I’m curious if you might know what’s going on with mine. I’ve had these for years (over a decade). They’re still growing, look fine, and I’ve propagated them into 3 main plants. The issue I’m having is that on two of them it seems like every other leaf isn’t opening. It will stay curled up in that long pointy spiral, and then maybe the next newer leaf will open normally. Any ideas? Should I just take it out of the pot and check it? It’s quite possible that all the roots are all tangled and suffocated in the bottom of the pot (I have not repotted it in ages).

  • These are a favorite of mine! I collect them. I have about 5 right now. I have yet to obtain that albo. But I will! Also my arrowheads don’t like to dry out between waterings and I was also told to water them when the top in of soil was dry. It’s been working for me, lol. I live in Louisiana tho. 🤷‍♀️

  • I have a pink syngonium (for some reason the plant I got has leaves half the size than what you showed) but there has been only one new leaf growth in more than 8-10 months. Also remaining leaves have fallen and now I have only one tiny new growth.. Thats all there is left. I tried everything to ensure that it thrives but not able to understand what is happening. My heart really breaks whenever I look at it.

  • I just got a Dwarf Princess Syugonium. So cute!! I watched one of your older posts (cuz that’s what came up in my search!). I’m heading for my scissors ✂️ to make some of my first h2O propagation, at least on this plant. I like the looks of these too!! Very under rated! I’ll check ✔️ out some of your newer posts soon…at least earlier than 3 years old ☆ HaHa@

  • i have one of these, and leaves keep turning yellow. At first i thought that it was too much light, so i moved it. Now, it seems like every time i water this plant I have two or three leaves that turn yellow. The plant is growing and producing new leaves….and i am not watering it often bc it seems to always lose leaves when I water. I don’t know what variety I have but the leaves are variegated. Do you have any suggestions? I really love this plant and i want it to live.

  • I am struggling with my arrowhead and im worried about being able to make it bushy so im hoping you see this and could give me some tips but its an old article so i dont know but my problem is i have four long stems with leaves but thats all and im scared to pinch them because they are all singular. I wish i could give a picture lol but if you could tell me how to turn this four long leaf plant into a more thriving bushy one thatd be much appreciated lol

  • Great article thnx for the tips I have the pink and the green one luv them I steam my plants with a steamer for clothes they love it lol it’s a little handheld I just put water and steam the room lol they get soo shiny and grow faster and look very happy lol luv my plants enjoy, BYEEEEEEEEEEEEEE ❤️🤗🌺🌴🌿🌹🍃🍂😎🌵🌵🌱🌼😍🌼🌾💝🌸🌹🌿🍃🍂🌵

  • Might I suggest a better way to test your soil moisture – stick a skewer, pointed chopstick, or other similar woody stick into the soil. Let it set for 10-15 minutes before pulling it out to check it. If the soil’s damp, the still will be damp. This way you’re not compacting your soil or damaging roots with your finger. Works great.

  • I have a very large Angel wing Begonia that had been in my Family for almost 20 years now. Have only repotted it twice in that time. So, about 10 yrs ago it was transplanted. Suddenly I noticed what I thought were weeds and kept pulling them out. I decided to plant one and have not known what it was. This is it here. The confusing part to me is why would this plant all of a sudden start growing in my Angel wing ?? I see that this Sweetie didn’t answer questions. So, if after all this time somebody here would possibly know why ? Thanx🦋

  • Hey Harley I went on a shopping haul last weekend and I got its three arrowhead plant don’t know what they are anywho I’m having problems with a white with a pink veins it’s got brown spots on it towards the bottom and it’s droopy looking the other one I got is pink on the outside white in the middle with a green veins in the middle don’t know the name but it’s gorgeous the last one is green when it comes in and then the top of it is like a pinkish chocolate color I put it in the window into a my leaves turn brown if you have any suggestions can you text me back thank you love you

  • Ok so I had an arrowhead (white one you showed) in a part of living room that didnt get as much light the window was an East facing window but the coach and blinds do not expose too much light. Any how I am in CA so i decided to put it outside in my porch area that faces south but shaded by porch. Currently it’s 67 degrees at night so my question is do you think it will do well on porch if it doesn’t get direct light? Thx

  • Ok so, I have a pretty large arrowhead plant that my grandma gave me. It’s SUPER droopy and I thought it had root rot, so I took it out, got rid of the dirt, and low and behold, root rot. So, I removed it and reported it, there was a bunch of little plants ones so I planted one and propagated the others while my larger one just got potted again. The propagation ones are all perky and happy (btw I put them in water) while the planted ones are droopy, the larger one looks like it’s a pothos it’s so droopy while the other one is just slightly. I have no idea what I’m doing wrong so if anyone could help that would be great 🙂

  • Hi, i bought a arrowhead online, it was ok when arrived but started to die leaf by leaf, only one leaf remaining, pls tell me how to look after it, watering process and best environment .. pls help . It kills me when any of my plant dies, that’s why i buy rarely, pls tell me what’s wrong and how to save it

  • Hi i have a white butterfly and it’s foliage is quiet small but its big and bushy, i have had it for about 8 months and i can’t figure out what it wants! it just goes very pale and then dramatically 1/4 the leaves die off young and go brown and floppy? it’s not in direct light and i mist a few times a week and water maybe once a week or so. I live in high humidity so it should be perfect for me! its so frustrating as the plant never gets any bigger as i loose so much! If anyone could help that would be great, ive been googling ages lol!

  • I Got A Maria & “Pink Allusion” From Lowes But I Discovered The Strawberries & My Pink Allusion Has Minimal Green & It Looks Identical Too Strawberries & I’m Confused, Did I Get A Hybrid, A Plant With The Wrong Label Or An Abnormally Pink Allusion? The Plant Has Solid Pink Leaves & Green Stems With Pink Hues. If You Have An Instagram I Can Dm A Pic Of It Or Email You One If You’re Okay With That Sorta Stuff🏹🌱

  • Mine leaves are droopy so I have to have something to support them. I misted them every other day, water when soil is dry (I stick my finger in). They sit in the south facing window and has grow light that not too close to them. I just recently got them so no fertilizer yet, but the leaves turned brown on the edges. And I don’t know how to stop the brown.
