Lily Tucker-Pritchett (Aubrey Frances Anderson-Emmons) is truly the gift that keeps on giving. She knows how to hold her own …

Was it always Lily in Modern Family?

Lily Tucker-Pritchett, the daughter of Modern Family’s Mitch and Cam, was initially played by infant twins, Ella and Jaden Hiller. However, their parents decided not to return for season 3, leading to the recasting of Lily with four-year-old Aubrey Anderson-Emmons. This allowed Modern Family to develop Lily’s character and disposition earlier, as many of her personality traits were almost fully formed by the end of Anderson-Emmons’ first season.

Lily became an integral member of Modern Family’s main characters, particularly in storylines featuring her fathers, Mitch and Cam. She balanced the two men and became the driving narrative motivation for them. As Cam and Mitch became more outlandish over Modern Family’s run, Lily grounded both her parents and became the voice of wisdom within the Tucker-Pritchet household.

If Lily had remained the same age, this essential function would not have been filled until season 6. Recasting Anderson-Emmons allowed writers to create storylines for Lily much sooner, rather than merely being a glorified prop for Cam to dress up and parade around. It also aligned her with the other younger characters in Modern Family, allowing Lily to grow into young adulthood by the time Modern Family was canceled after season 11, completing her story arc from adoption to maturity.

  • I kinda actually thought that Lily’s character personality was how the actress played it, and not as a result of her being bad at acting. I mean, there are people who are more stoic in real life, and I thought it was whole part of the Asian in America, and being adopted into an unconventional family thing. There was the episode that showed how surprised Cam and Mitch were about some of Lily’s achievements and popularity in school that they didn’t know, they wanted to hear what kind of music she was into (metal), and they ended it saying “well, if it ain’t broke…” There’s also the episode that showed how Claire was kinda scared of Lily.

  • I love the grown up Lily. She’s always the forgotten one and seen walking around the background, she doesn’t have a lot of lines or acting role, but her punchlines always strikes. Some people says her acting weren’t good, but I think she behaves exactly the character she plays: an outsider who despite all the love she gets, knowing that she would never fit into 1) gay marriage family, 2) a white family, 3) a big family. She doesn’t express a lot of emotion because she was just killing time going through whatever was laid for her.

  • A lot of times kids definitely warm up to the idea of another baby either when they never had a choice because the kid is only a year younger or when they’re a lot older and understand what’s going on better. They’re less selfish. When they tried when she was a little kid it was all about being selfish because that’s what kids do.
