Sunflower cultivation has been a significant industry in Asia for thousands of years, with Ukraine and Russia being the two most significant producers. Ukraine, with its long history of sunflower cultivation dating back to the 19th century, accounts for over 30% of global production. Russia, on the other hand, has been growing sunflowers for centuries, with its southern regions providing ideal conditions for cultivation. Argentina, the third-largest sunflower producer, has seen a significant increase in sunflower production in recent years, primarily in the northern regions of the country.

The United States, China, and Turkey also feature in the top six sunflower producers, each with unique challenges and opportunities for cultivation. Despite climate change and the increasing demand for alternative energy sources, the global sunflower industry continues to thrive. The war in Ukraine and the Turkey-Syria Earthquake may change these rankings in 2024. Sunflowers are essential crops for farmers and play a crucial role in the global economy, providing a range of products used in various industries.

What is the rarest sunflower in the world?

Schweinitz’s sunflower, one of the rarest species in the US, has been on the US Fish and Wildlife Service’s federally endangered list since June 1991. Found only in the Carolinas’ lower Piedmont, populations occur in Lancaster and York County in South Carolina and Anson, Cabarrus, Davidson, Gaston, Mecklenberg, Montgomery, Randolph, Rowan, Stanly, and Union Counties in North Carolina, all within about 90 miles surrounding Charlotte. In these areas combined, only 90 known populations exist, with less than 10 sites being protected.

The rare flower was named after Lewis David von Schweinitz, a Moravian clergyman and church administrator from Salem, N. C., who discovered the sunflower in the early 1800s. The sunflower blooms late, from August to frost, and is composed of small, yellow disk flowers and yellow ray flowers. The plant generally ranges from 3-6 feet tall but can grow as tall as 16 feet. The composite flowers are 2-3 inches in diameter, and the leaves range from 2-8 inches long. The stem is usually covered with minute bristles or hairs and is reddish-purple.

South Dakota is a top sunflower producer, making late summer an ideal time to witness the stunning yellow fields that stretch endlessly. Sunflowers bloom in late July or early August and stay brilliant for about 30 days. Young pre-bloom plants track the sun throughout the day and turn back to the east overnight to catch the morning sunlight. As the heads become heavier, the flowers stay facing the east.

The exact locations of sunflower fields are constantly changing due to weather and crop rotation. Some stretches of highway, like Highway 34 west of Pierre and Highway 14 from Hayes to Wall, are consistent, but exploring for yourself is the best way to appreciate the beauty of nature.

Sunflowers are composed of thousands of minute flowers, with the center containing disc florets. These florets mature into fruit and seed and contain both male and female reproductive organs. They are surrounded by ray florets, which are sterile.

The National Gallery in London acquired Van Gogh’s Sunflowers in 1924, with assistance from the Courtauld Fund, a fund for purchasing modern paintings. The Trustees believed that Van Gogh’s sunflower paintings were associated with his fame and wanted to represent him in London. The gallery purchased the painting, along with three other major works from the 1920s, all painted in the South of France. To expand the story, the Gallery relied on long-term loans from private collections, Tate, and annual loans from the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam.

The Sunflowers display, from January 25 to April 27, 2014, celebrates the National Gallery’s long friendship with the Van Gogh Museum and acknowledges both institutions’ ongoing research into Van Gogh’s art. The EU-funded CHARISMA project has provided access to non-invasive examination techniques, allowing for extensive material studies of the paintings and helping to build a clearer picture of the artist’s work.

NASA Harvest is working on improving global sunflower production monitoring, with a focus on Ukraine and Russia. Traditional crop monitoring methods are labor-intensive and expensive, making them difficult to conduct in regions affected by conflict, natural disasters, or disease outbreaks. Remote sensing, or Earth observation (EO) satellites, can overcome these challenges and provide better understanding of crop location, crop type, health, and yield.

NASA Harvest has integrated EO data into various models and open access platforms, including ARYA and AGMET. Most agricultural monitoring models are trained on specific areas, making it difficult to transfer them to other regions. There is a growing interest in developing generalizable models that can be trained in one region and successfully applied in other regions, given the importance of monitoring global agricultural production.

  • I’ve been hearing a tiny piece of this song for SO LONG. I was bummed earlier, so I took to Spotify which opened back up to the Theo and Rogan episode I was listening to the other day. After it was over I heard that song and looked to see who it was. TOTALLY NEEDED THIS WHOLE SONG THIS MORNING. I was going to send it to my Love, but after a bit of overthinking decided against it. Gonna go hit repeat on Spotify for a while. 😎👍

  • One of my life’s greatest discoveries…. And I needed this far greater than I even knew at the time… Some debts can never be repayed – only because no gesture would ever be sufficient!! Thank you for helping a lost soul find his way even if only for a few minutes at a time. Stay Classy and Shine On!!

  • I buried my father today. After my mom died in 2016 I had to move in with my dad for the last 5 years to take care of him while he was failing with dementia. Over the last 5 years of taking care of him, but more so the last 3, I became very depressed and struggled daily. I lived alone for many years prior and had a life and friends but I was kinda stuck now in limbo for 5 years while he was fading and my mental state was being taxed but I knew I needed to stay. On December 12th I found him having a stroke in his kitchen and after a 40 day nightmare of being bounced around from hospital to rehab, trying to learn to walk again, 3 ER trips from rehab and a one final stroke that rendered him unable to swallow, speak, see or move…I had to sign the papers to admit him into hospice. He passed peacefully there on the 8th day…I’m in a weird place right now, I don’t know what my future holds and I won’t lie, I’m scared. I feel like I’m too young to not have parents, but I know there are others out there much younger than me that maybe lost their parents earlier, so I know it’s just something I gotta push through, I get that…but I’m sitting here in his house alone and everything in the world I knew not long ago is different and since December 12th nothing at all has made sense and he’s already in the ground and I never even really got to process what happened…

  • I’m not here because of Theo but love this song. Idk why but it feels like happiness and being content where you are. Beautiful song. There was another song from the 90s named Shine from Collective Soul and that’s how I found this a few years ago. It’s a good song if you haven’t heard it before. Another underrated artist like Bishop
