The Concordia Greenhouse Space is a versatile, all-organic space located on the 13th floor of the Henry H. Hall Building in Montreal, Quebec. It offers a refreshing change of scenery for unwinding, enjoying meals, and hosting events. The Concordia Greenhouse Project is a collectively run, consensus-based, non-profit organization that uses the rooftop greenhouse as an all-organic space for education and research into urban sustainability, community building, and food security.
The greenhouse was built in 1966, facing South-West for optimal sun exposure and not being blocked by shade from surrounding buildings. It is composed of a series of separate glass windows. The Concordia Greenhouse hosts workshops, events, and workshops focused on food issues and alternatives to mainstream consumerism. Since 1966, the space has offered sanctuary and education to students.
However, the Concordia Greenhouse announced on January 9 that the space will be temporarily closed from February 2024 until early next year. The decision to close the greenhouse is part of their mission to provide a welcoming, organic green space that fosters community by providing experiential learning opportunities within a year-round growing environment.
The Concordia Greenhouse Project aims to strengthen the urban agriculture movement at Concordia University and in Montreal by growing local produce using ecological practices. Starting Monday, March 25th, the greenhouse will reopen to the public. The Concordia Greenhouse Project is seeking volunteers to help restore the greenhouse’s mechanical rooms and ensure its continued operation.
