Snake plants, also known as “Mother-in-Law’s Tongue” and Sansevieria trifasciata, are a popular and hardy houseplant with stiff, upright leaves that range from one to eight feet tall. They are perfect for beginners and require little care, light, or water. Snake plants thrive under various conditions but require optimum growth conditions to yield healthier plants with vibrant colors and robust growth.
To care for snake plants, follow these expert tips:
Water fortnightly, or when the top two inches of soil feels dry. More sunlight is better, but anything is fine. Keep your snake plant in a warm spot, ideally above 10°C. Repot in spring using houseplant compost, and wipe the leaves occasionally with a clean, damp cloth.
Choose well-draining soil, avoid compact soil, as it will hold more moisture and could lead to root rot. Snake plants prefer bright, indirect light and can even tolerate some direct sunlight. However, they also grow well in shady corners and need 8 to 10 hours of indirect sunlight or a few hours of early-morning direct sunlight.
Proper care and keeping your plants clean and free from dust is the best pest prevention. Snake plants need very little water in winter and should be fed once a month from April to September. Wipe the leaves occasionally to prevent dust building.
Place snake plants in areas with indirect light, ensure the room isn’t scorching hot or dry, and don’t overwater your snake plant. Snake plants can tolerate a wide range of temperatures but grow best at 18-27°C.
