Stained glass tulips are a popular and rewarding hobby that can be created at home using various tools and equipment. To create a tulip, you need sheets of colored glass, a glass cutter, Grozer pliers, copper foil, gel or liquid flux, a soldering iron, and an electric glass grinder. The process of turning your designs into gorgeous stained glass pieces is easy and rewarding.
To create a 7-3/4″ x 9″ circular stained glass design with a free-form border and central open spaces featuring a young maid gathering her first spring tulip, you need to follow these steps:
- Design the design by cutting out a flower shape.
- Line the overlay with a piece of colored paper.
- Transfer the image to the wax paper and choose colors and paint each shape.
- Melt the wax and let it cool.
- Iron the wax paper for several seconds to prevent it from melting all at once.
- Once melted, let it cool.

What do you put in a tulip glass?
The tulip glass, designed for Belgian ales, is versatile and suitable for various brews, including IPAs and stouts. Its flared rim supports a healthy head and narrow waist helps hold in aromas. The stem and foot make for easy grip and swirling, releasing more aromas. Capacity ranges from 16-20 ounces, and they are easily found from breweries and famous glassware brands. The shaker pint glass, originally a cocktail shaker, is popular due to its affordability, durability, and stackability. While suitable for light lagers, it may not showcase craft beer’s flavors and aromas.
How do you make stained glass color?
One straightforward method for creating decorative and functional glass paintings is to utilize clear glass jars, Mod Podge, and food coloring. The color and Mod Podge should be mixed, the interior of the jar coated, and the coating allowed to dry upside down. This method may be employed in the creation of both decorative and functional pieces. The selection of paint is contingent upon the desired color’s permanence or depth.
How do you grow tulips in a glass?
To cultivate tulips, it is necessary to provide the bulbs with water and sunlight. The optimal ratio is to fill the vase until the bulbs are just below the top. It is recommended that the bulbs be placed in a room with bright, indirect sunlight, where they will undergo root growth. It is essential to maintain optimal water levels and to replace the water regularly. Once the tulips have bloomed, it is important to maintain the same moisture level and change the water regularly, as they should last a minimum of one week.
How is color added to stained glass?
During the late medieval period, glass factories were established with a ready supply of silica, an essential material for glass manufacture. Silica requires a high melting temperature, which not all factories could achieve. To lower the melting temperature, materials like potash, soda, and lead can be added to lower the melting temperature. Other substances, such as lime, are added to make the glass more stable. Glass is colored by adding metallic oxide powders or finely divided metals while it is in a molten state.
Copper oxides produce green or bluish green, cobalt makes deep blue, and gold produces wine red and violet glass. Pot metal glass, coloured while in the clay pot in the furnace, is known as pot metal glass.
Glass makers gather a glob of molten glass from the pot heating in the furnace using a blow-pipe. The gather is formed to the correct shape and a bubble of air is blown into it. Metal tools, molds of wood soaked in water, and gravity are used to manipulate the gather into a long, cylindrical shape. The bottom of the cylinder is removed, and the cylinder is then placed in another oven to heat and flatten it.
Hand-blown or mouth-blown cylinder (also called muff glass) and crown glass were used in the traditional fabrication of stained-glass windows. Crown glass is hand-blown glass created by blowing a bubble of air into a gather of molten glass and spinning it rapidly. The centrifugal force causes the molten bubble to open up and flatten, and it can be cut into small sheets.

Is there money in making stained glass?
A stained glass business can make significant profits based on the skill set, knowledge, and type of glass created. Successful architectural art glass makers can earn over a million dollars in sales, while private artists report lower annual sales. The standard range for profits is $30, 000 to $60, 000 within the first three years. To increase profits, consider teaching classes online, in writing, and in your studio, developing your craft methodically, taking larger architectural commissions, and repairing stained glass. Selling your work both locally and online will ensure a wide client base. For a more guided approach, access TRUiC’s free Small Business Startup Guide.
How do you make tulips erect?
To prevent the drooping of tulips, it is recommended that the stems be trimmed by 3-5 centimetres and cut at an angle to prevent the formation of gas bubbles. Utilize a pin or newspaper to puncture the stems. In the event of drooping, the stems should be cut and the flowers placed in cold water to facilitate rehydration. It is recommended that the water in the vase be changed every few days and that the vase be kept away from air conditioners and radiators to prevent drooping.
Is stain glass an expensive hobby?
Starting stained glass art with low initial investment can be achieved by creating smaller, less complex pieces using a few basic tools. These tools include a pencil for drawing patterns, a permanent marker for tracing the outline of the pattern, masking tape for avoiding grounding areas, scissors for cutting out stained glass projects, and tracing paper for transferring cut patterns to the glass. Some of these tools may already be available or can be improvised with the help of other tools. Purchasing a stained glass starters kit or handpicking the necessary tools can also help in the process.
What kind of paint do you use to make stained glass?
Plaid’s Folk Art Enamels are water-based acrylic paints designed for glass and ceramics. They come in various colors and are easy to store in squeeze bottles. These non-toxic paints can be used by air drying for 21 days or baking the glass in the oven. As an avid crafter, I found Folk Art Enamel paints to be just as easy to use. They are opaque and long-lasting after baking in a regular household oven. To damage the paint, intentional scratching with a knife or sharp object is required.
Is making stained glass bad for you?
The inhalation and dermal exposure to lead fumes and lead-contaminated dust are potential risks associated with the handling of leaded glassware. These contaminants have the potential to transfer onto personal items such as clothing, footwear, hair, skin, bags, and mobile phones.

This is beautiful! You can use gold for your outlines because….you can color the copper foil or lead with patina and make it black, gold, silver and I’m sure there is more by now! I used to do stained glass. Red glass is the most expensive because it has gold in it! There are two different stained glass techniques, copper foil or lead! You ROCK!!! 🌹🌹🌹
Another amazing creation, you are so talented! FYI, the connective pieces in a stained glass piece can be any pliable metal…. lead, zinc, brass and copper. These pieces are called cames, and yes there are gold cames…..more accurately the lead cames are covered with gold leaf at the end. It doesn’t show up as well as black and therefore not used too often….but you do you and we will Love it 😍
The black bits in between are lead in our old churches and cathedrals. They are actually a very dark silvery colour, but nearly always portrayed as black in paintings and look black in a lot of photos. Love your articles Rachael. Your work is always inspirational and beautiful. Thank you, love from Coventry, UK.
Rachel my dear you are amazing. This is absolutely beautiful! Your lighthouse would look fab done as stained glass as would any scenary. I watched a vid of someone making a stained glass panel for a front door and I think he said the sections were made of a lead substitute. In the old days they used to use real lead hence the term “leaded light” but I guess they use a less toxic metal now. Keep up the good work I just love to watch your website. Sending blessings.xx
Rachel, I truly Enjoy perusal your articles & Love your Laughter. You’re so talented & down to earth. =) I’d Love to see you paint a Black Bear that have the tan muzzle.. either just an adult bear or a mama & her cub. ♥️ BTW, my hubby & I Enjoy True Crime shows.. also like the show Nightwatch, which is real EMTs. =) – Ruth
So beautiful, love love love tulips. I really like the stained glass look and im excited to try this. I would love to see you do a stained glass wolf or hummingbird. Oh who am i kidding, I would love to see you paint anything lol… Thanks again for the great tutorial and I appreciate you so much ….stay safe
that ‘black stuff” that holds stained glass together is actually “stretched” soft – either U website or H website lead – then soldered together at the joints and rubbed with patina to darken the gray lead…. you have to actually pull the lead with pliers and a vice so it does not stretch when you place it in a stained glass object. The copper tape stained glass is actually a stick on copper tape that is then covered in solder. Lots of flux, solder, fumes, cuts, slivers of glass.
You are so talented lady. You freehand so much it makes me afraid to try, but I am going to have to bite the bullet and go for it. I am a dot painter, so all your brushing and free-handing really intimidates me. This is so beautiful it might be the one. Give me ALL the flowers! You can never do too many for me. I love your website. You are truly a rock star💫 My grandkids, flowers, dot art, murder and ghost stories are my jam.🌻🔴☠️👻
I realize this is stylized stained glass, however, as someone who dabbles in the art, a suggestion when emulating the art would be to be aware of break lines. This rendition is beautiful, however, (& I know I’m being picky) is nearly impossible to do in stained glass because the cuts are not practical in practice. With that said, your work is wonderful & I so enjoy perusal your articles.
