Should Hydrangeas Be Wrapped During The Winter?

Winterizing hydrangeas is a simple process that can help them survive the cold and return stronger. Smooth and panicle hydrangeas bloom on new growth and should be pruned in late winter or early spring. Wrap the entire shrub, ensuring not to break any branches, and secure gently with twine, clips, or duct tape. Some creative gardeners make these wrapped shrubs look like big ones.

For endless summer hydrangeas, protect them during winter with a layer of mulch and leave faded blooms to create a unique appearance. If you don’t have a suitable space, overwinter hydrangeas in the garden with frost protection using bubble wrap, burlap fabric, and shredded leaves.

To winterize hydrangeas, ensure they are well-watered through the fall. If you live in a very cold region and need to wrap up your hydrangeas due to regular frost, remove the layers in early spring and be prepared to reapply them if necessary. The need for winter protection depends on how cold the winter temperatures drop. In colder climates, wrap or completely cover marginally hardy hydrangeas.

Drape your hydrangeas for winter protection, making them think they live in a warmer growing zone. Use a tomato-shaped barrier to insulate them. Water your hydrangeas more often during late fall and wrap them in burlap to keep sunlight away. Keep hydrangeas covered all winter to prevent a false spring effect and ensure they are entering winter in good condition.
