Chinese Hibiscus, a plant widely cultivated in tropical and sub-tropical regions, is not known in the wild and its native distribution is uncertain. It is thought to be part of tropical Asia and Pacific Islands. Shoe flower plants can be grown from cuttings, which are spread by taking a snip of the stem that’s four inches long. Slipper plants (Euphorbia lomelii) are a great addition to hot, dry gardens and also grow well in pots.
The Apple of Peru, also known as the Shoo Fly plant, can be grown for its lantern-like pods, which are quite unique in appearance and similar to Chinese lanterns, although different in color. They start in spring and make large plants quickly, flowering from early summer till worn out in late autumn. Gumamela plants produce beautifully-large flowers that can grow up to six, with the Shoo Fly plant reaching a height of 1.2m (4ft) and a spread of 1m (3¼ft) in just a few months.
To grow hibiscus, dig holes, plant them in full sun, water them regularly, and manage any pests. In northern locations, plant them in full sun with fertile and loamy soil. Select varieties that tolerate temperatures in which they thrive. Indoor hibiscus should be grown in a bright spot away from direct sunlight, with a minimum temperature of 7-10°C and high humidity.
Hibiscus trees are easy to care for, provided they receive proper growing conditions, including the right amount of water, type of soil, and adequate light.
