Tulips are a beautiful spring-blooming flower that can be grown indoors or in gardens. They are part of the Liliaceae family and require 14 to 15 weeks of winter temperatures below 48 degrees to perform well. They are best when springs are long and balmy with temperatures between 45 and 60 degrees.
To grow tulips, choose a location with adequate sun and well-drained soil. Dig a hole three times as deep as the bulb’s height and plant the bulb in the hole with the pointy side up. Backfill the hole with soil and water thoroughly. Plant the bulbs about 5-7″ deep and 3-4″ apart, placing them in the soil with their pointy ends up.
The general rule of thumb is to plant bulbs three times as deep as the bulb’s length. Traditionally, tulips are planted 6-8″ deep. Plant tulips in moist but well-drained soil in a sunny spot in mid- to late autumn, such as November or December. Potted tulips can be planted in the ground if they are suited to your climate, but the longer the foliage, the better.
Soil temperature should be 55°F or cooler, and the bulbs should be planted in mid to late fall when you are raking leaves and doing other fall clean up chores. The bulbs should be planted in groups of about 10 bulbs, and the bulbs should be planted in a sunny location with well-drained soil.

I just planted some tulips in my garden and I’m afraid I’m too late. It says November – December on the package and here I am in February hoping they will be okay, If not I guess I’ll see them next year. I love this though it makes me so excited for mine! I can not wait for spring! I have lily’s and gladiolus from the previous years but as you probably know they don’t come up till late spring/early summer so I hope these can come up at the beginning of spring so I can have a good steady staggered grow of different flowers coming up from early spring till late fall. I guess we will see I will be posting on my page the progress if any.
