Methods For Cultivating Lotuses In Water?

Lotus plants thrive in water and require a moist soil to grow. They are hardy down to zone 4, but a circulating system is necessary to prevent freezing. Lotus flowers thrive in a spacious aquatic habitat, and a container with a 3 to 4 feet diameter provides ample room for growth. The lotus needs clean, warm water temperatures between 75 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit, and should be far from fountains or water flows.

A container with no holes and 4 to 10 inches of water above the soil is recommended. Smaller varieties can grow in 4-8 inches of water on top of the soil layer. A single, flowering water lotus plant (Nelumbo spp.) can brighten a windowsill or patio. Dwarf lotus works especially well, as taller standard lotus can grow up to 18″ deep or even deeper, but it takes more energy.

Lotus plants require full sun or at least six hours of direct light per day and warm water temperatures. To ensure quick sprouting, keep the water warm and clean, and change it if cloudy to prevent bacteria growth. Lotus tubers should be planted in spring after the water temperature has warmed to at least 70 degrees and placed in small aquatic baskets.

Lotus plants need support in which they can grow, and mud provides this support. Lotus seeds can germinate in water without dirt, making them a perennial plant that requires a sunny, warm home.

  • I have kept some lotus seeds in a glass of water for about a mont. It is done as per the given directions. The seeds are live I can see the green germination in the seeds. But it is not coming out as expected. .I got it very healthly grown in India. Very anxiously waiting for its growth. I am staying in Dallas, Texas.. What should I do for its growth?

  • i just started growing some water lillies myself and its been about 2-3 weeks and they dont look simmilar to how it is shown in the article in fact the few seeds i got that has sproudet look simmilar to the ones in 0:50 but with stored stems. Do i need to replace the water more or place the container somewhere else with less sunlight?

  • my seedlings are about 4 inches (still soaking in the water). I have about 20 seeds in 4 tupperware containers that I replace with warm filtered water everyday and leave in partial sun. yesterday the seedlings were bright green but today in one of the containers they have all turned black? They are still green at the tips and beginnings (part coming out of seed) of the seedlings, but the middle is mostly black/dark brown. Is this normal?? What do I do?
