Methods For Cleaning Your Ears With Water?

Ear irrigation is a method used to remove and prevent earwax buildup, also known as “ear lavage”. It involves using a syringe to insert liquid into the ears to flush out excess wax. The process can be done safely, but it may cause dizziness and other issues.

If your eardrum doesn’t contain a tube or has a hole in it, self-care measures may help remove excess earwax that’s blocking your ear canal. Soften the eardrum by turning your head to the side over a sink or bathtub to let the water (and, ideally, wax) flow out. However, be gentle and flush your ear.

Ear irrigation can be done at home with a damp washcloth or over-the-counter drops. If your ears are impacted, a doctor can remove wax buildup. Earwax is a normal bodily substance that protects your ears from infection, water, and debris. Ear irrigation can be done safely, but there are some caveats.

To soften earwax, use warm water in the shower. Tilt your head to one side and run some water in the ear canal, then tilt in the opposite direction so the water flows out. After a day or two, gently squirt warm water into your ear canal. Sit upright with a towel on the shoulder to capture water that drains from the ear. Gently pull the ear upward and backward to allow the water to drain.

The best time to clean your ears is in the shower using gentle soap and warm water. After washing your hair, wipe down the outer ear with a washcloth. A controlled flow of warm water will be squirted into your ear canal to flush out the earwax.

Ear irrigation should be a painless procedure, but it’s important to be gentle and flush your ear thoroughly. If you experience dizziness or other issues, consult a doctor for earwax removal.

Is it bad to let shower water in your ear?

Clean your ears in the shower using gentle soap and warm water. After washing your hair, wipe down the outer ear with a washcloth and clean behind the ears. The ear canal doesn’t need to be cleaned, but let the shower water flush it out if it feels full. Drain the water after showering to avoid infection.

Unsafe ear cleaning habits include using cotton swabs or Q-tips, which can push earwax deeper into the canal and puncture the eardrum. Keep other narrow objects like bobby pins, pen caps, and fingers out of the ear canals to avoid further harm. Unlearning these habits can help prevent infections and maintain good oral hygiene.

Is ear flushing at home safe?

Ear irrigation is a safe method to remove and prevent earwax buildup, which is a normal bodily substance that protects the ears from infection, water, and debris. It can be done at home, manually, or using a commercially prepared kit. A gentle technique and water close to average body temperature are used to avoid ear damage. If at-home irrigation fails after 15 to 20 minutes or the person is at high risk for infection or bleeding, it is recommended to see a healthcare provider.

To remove an object from an ear, use tweezers if the object is easily visible and graspable. Use water to wash the ear canal if there is no hole in the eardrum and no ear tubes are in place. Avoid using water for batteries, food, or plant material. If the object is an insect, tilt the head so that the ear with the insect is upward and pour alcohol or warm oil into the ear. Avoid using oil if there is a hole in the eardrum or if ear tubes are in place.

Avoid using tools like cotton swabs or matchsticks to pry an object out, as they can push it deeper into the ear and cause more damage. Never use liquid if there is a hole in the eardrum or if a child has ear tubes. If you see signs of a hole in the eardrum, see a healthcare professional immediately.

What if water won’t come out of the ear?

To remove water from your ears, follow these five tips:

  1. Let time and gravity help, lying on your side and resting your head on a towel to absorb the water.
  2. Use alcohol or hydrogen peroxide to dry out the ear canal, but be cautious with alcohol drops if you have a perforated eardrum.
  3. Use a hairdryer to straighten the ear canal, using one hand and the other on the cool setting.
  4. Chew, yawn, shake, and tug to move your TMJ or jaw joint, and shake your head to provide additional assistance.
  5. Avoid using finger, cotton swab, or other objects to push obstructions deeper into the ear canal and puncture your eardrum.
  6. Wear swim plugs or a swim cap to prevent water from entering your ears.
  7. Dry your ears thoroughly with a towel after swimming.

If you are unable to drain water with these techniques and experience ear pain or pressure, seek help.

How to unblock ears?

In the event of ear congestion, the Eustachian tubes may be opened by performing the following actions: swallowing, yawning, or chewing sugar-free gum. Should this prove ineffective, it is recommended that the individual take a deep breath and expel the contents of the nose in a gentle manner while simultaneously pinching the nostrils closed and maintaining a sealed mouth. If a popping sound is audible, the procedure has been completed successfully.

Will water in ear drain on its own?

Swimmer’s ear (otitis externa) is a type of ear infection where water trapped in the outer auditory canal can lead to ear infections. This condition can be caused by swimming, but can also occur from exposure to water. If water is trapped in the ear canal, it can cause a tickling sensation in the ear, which may extend to the jawbone or throat. This can also result in reduced hearing or muffled sounds. To prevent this, it is essential to remove excess water from the ear canal using methods like blow drying, ear drops, or adding more water.

How to flush an ear at home?

To facilitate the softening of wax within the ear canal, the application of a suitable lubricant, such as baby oil, mineral oil, glycerin, or hydrogen peroxide, via an eyedropper is recommended. This should be followed by the use of warm water. After approximately one to two days, gently introduce warm water into the ear canal, then proceed to dry it.

How do I unclog my ear with water?

To remove liquid from an ear, lie down on one side, tilt the head so the affected ear faces down, and gently tug and jiggle the ear in all directions. Wiggle deeper areas of the ear, yawning, wiggling the jaw, or making exaggerated chewing motions with the mouth to move water towards the outer canal. Tuck at the earlobe to finish the process. If pain occurs while tugging the earlobe, it’s a sign of infection and time to consult a doctor. They may prescribe medicated eardrops to clear the infection if it’s the underlying cause.

How long does it take for water to clear your ear?

This can be a symptom of other ear problems and conditions. The cause of fluid in the eardrum can be a result of various factors, such as a blockage in the drainage tubes or a blockage in the eardrum.

  • I have the Debrox earwax kit. It comes with ear drops and a small syringe. This method worked. Pour the ear drops (8 drops) lie down for 5 minutes. Stood up for 15 minutes Then I poured water with the syringe how the article shows you. But I roughly squirted my ear with water. Didn’t put the syringe in ear canal, but the water hit my ear hard. A lot of ear wax came out, but my ear was still a little clogged, so I straightened my head for the water to come out. And then tilted my head again, did everything the same and finally my ear was fully unclogged. I can hear again 😅 I had been putting peroxide and Debrox eardrops every day and nothing was happening till I squirted my ear with the syringe.

  • I followed the instructions yesterday, but didn’t wait 10 minutes for the solution to marinate in my ear. I tried again today, tilting the head sideways on the pillow, and waited 10 minutes. I kept squirting warm water into my ear until I heard a soaking sound. Repeating the water squirting definitely helped!! So glad I came across this article!!

  • Thank you. I’ve had a recurring problem with this in my left ear for a number of years, and I must say it made me slightly depressed – as if in some kind of claustrophobic hellhole. I’m an audiophile and appreciate good music, as well as a naturalist who appreciates the sounds of birds and nature. Honestly, when my ear gets blocked my quality of life in terms of mental health suffers greatly. Thank goodness I’ve found reliable solutions! It is an underrated condition.

  • I had some really badly impacted ears on holidays and did this to clear them out. It was like getting to pee after an entire day of holding it in. I’ve seen some other comments about how it really impacts your quality of life, and I can confirm, I was terribly grumpy, my wife was so sick of me 😅. My stepdad today is having ear troubles and I was telling him about ear syringes. He was skeptical, but this article was the voice of authority that helped convince him and the great instructions gave him confidence to try it. Great job on the article

  • Wow….I never have had ear wax buildup issue but recently my ears began ringing and hurting some off and on, then left ear went almost completely muffled. Went to urgent care and they said I had compacted ears…i did debrox with my 1 ear after they cleared my left ear and it really works! It feels so liberating getting that stuff out. Hope it never happens again

  • I marvel at the chunks, literal chunks of debris I collect in the sink after a few good squeezes of my ear bulb syringe. Bits of paper ear plugs and wax is what come out of my ears. It’s a real relief! (The deposits have to be softened so it is best done after a whole day or two of swimming and diving in a pool or in the ocean. You can soak your ears for a couple of nights too. )

  • Excellent. The kits that use a small bulb are not effective for cleaning impacted ear wax. They do not produce enough volume and pressure to dislodge the wax. You may end up with vertigo from all the ear drops with no wax removal. The proper way to clean impacted ears is to use a warm water solution under pressure that seeps past the wax into the inner ear canal. This warm water solution creates a hydraulic force that pushes the wax out of the ear canal. However, this method requires a lot of volume and pressure to work. Ear specialists use a large syringe or a machine to perform this procedure. Be aware it can be painful if you have a large wax buildup. Done by a professional, the high pressure and large volume of fluid will remove all the wax and restore your hearing. My ears were so impacted everything was suddenly too loud. My coworkers noticed my voice was a few decibels lower.

  • Thank you so much for the article. I didn’t know I needed to tilt my head for 3-5 minutes to let the ear drop work before perusal! I only kept tilting my head for like 30 seconds!! So I have a little question here: I felt that something solid is scratching inside my ear(not in a painful way, but in a rough way) and nothing comes out (usually you can see ear wax comes out right?) when doing the final cleaning after several days of ear drops. Does it mean my ear wax has not melted and is still hard inside there? Can I just continue using ear drops right away or tomorrow? Or do I need to let the ear rest for a few days before using it again? Thank you.

  • When they say don’t squeeze the water too hard they mean it! I tore a hole in my eardrum After a coworker said to blast it with the baby snotblower stream of water as hard as possible to knock the wax out…30 seconds of immense pain and then lost a ton of hearing. Imagine a trampoline with a tear in it…

  • Thank you Dr. O’Donovan for this helpful information that you share. When i was a kid i had terrible pain when water was getting in my left ear, pushing me to believe that i had perforated ear drum. And since then i have been very careful with water on that ear. Now can i clean build up ear wax on that ear using hydrogen peroxide? Thank you again!

  • Was born with an earache…had tubes 4times…. suffering and agony due to infection iv experienced for weeks on end…. eustachian tubes are deformed won’t open naturally….last time I went through this I was 12…I’m 39 now…this is the first time iv had a clogged ear since 12… not experiencing pain…but extreme discomfort and sharp pain due to pressure behind my left eye….oh I never thought I’d go through this again….here we go…

  • Thanks for the article! I tried using Otex express ear drops for a few days followed by the bulb syringe. It didn’t work, so now I need to start putting olive oil into my ears before having the ear wax removed professionally. I used the Otex express drops this morning, is it safe to start putting olive oil into my ears tomorrow?

  • Like two years ago i had a lot of excess earwax and had to go to a doctor to have it removed since i didn’t know how to do it myself. They cleaned out my ears so thoughly that afterwards it felt like I had my old ears replaced with new fresh ones. I could hear the soft humming of the refrigerator, my cats breathing, leaves rustling outsiymy window, the wind in my hair, everything. My ears are getting clogged again but i want to try and remove them on my own now before they got as bad as they did last time. Hopefully this tutorial will help

  • I just used this method..I used wax removal drops from the drug store..then used the syringe however it was still clogged so after using the syringe I put more drops in and used a cotton ball to stick in while I was laying down on my side then finally it became unclogged hopefully this helps someone cause I know it was driving me crazy lol

  • My right ear is producing brown smelly wax. The smell is a yeasty stagnant smell. I had an infection a few weeks ago and was put on antibiotics. After the course I extracted black looking wax from my ear. Since then I kept getting a horrible wiff in my nose now and again. I found it was coming from ear ear where the brown wax is now.

  • I thought that the syringe bulb was suppose to be used by sucking out the wax buildup? Does anyone know if you can do it that way? I had a microsuctioning ear wax removal done at the doctor’s office and I was wondering why you couldn’t use suction…like this…at home? Anyone know? I’d be grateful : )

  • Benefits of 3% hydrogen peroxide: 1. It can help clean your ears 2. It can help kill nail fungus 3. It can help stop athlete’s foot 4. It can help with a sore throat 5. It can help stop acne 6. It can be used to clean mold and mildew 7. It helps remove stains 8. It helps kill plant fungus 9. It can be used to clean vegetables

  • I tried irrigation too weakly a year ago without results . Thanks for this tutorial, I got the courage to try again and feel so much better 🥲. Out of fear of infection, I used boiled cooled water with a nasal irrigation packet (sodium chloride plus sodium bicarbonate ). After Several rounds of hydrogen peroxide until bubbles stop plus the irrigation, finally, started seeing some crazy dark chunks flying. Wow.

  • Hi doctor I need too get my right ear syringed I’m going to my doctor to get it removed I have horrible anxiety and I’m scared something will go wrong I have 2 questions does softer the wax make it less chance of something going wrong and does every doctor know how too do the procedure not sure if this is right place to ask but can’t see anyone else to ask

  • Using olive oil did help soften the ear wax, but made my hearing much worse because it just made the wax go into all the crevices that it wasn’t in before which caused a greater blockage. I can’t work for several weeks with no hearing in 1 ear. Any suggestions for this? Can I just go directly to syringing?

  • I use a smaller Bulb Syringe and squirt warm water up into your ears and let the wax fall out into the sink. Then another good method is to use Hydrogen Peroxide and pour some into your ears while laying down and let it tickle and clean your ear. It will not hurt you, not even if the peroxide goes even farther down into your ears than at first. It will not harm anything and will kill the bacteria and wax.

  • I always have trouble with my left ear. I had to go to the doctors a couple of years ago to have my ear professionally cleaned I couldn’t hear through my left ear properly…muffled sound. Once again my left ear is blocked but this time I have pain in the ear. I’ve tried to move the wax with olive oil and a syringe but I have no luck. I think I may have an ear infection and I think I may I have it since last year because I constantly suffer from colds and sore throat since last year…..a ear infection cam cause these symptoms. I will have to go to the doctors again to have my left ear examined because it might not be wax this time it may be an infection. I get no results from the olive oil and syringe my ear is still blocked.

  • OK. I’ve tried this with AT LEAST six, possibly eight, different kinds of ear drops. NOTHING has worked, ear has always gotten MORE plugged. I do everything this article showed, in fact I put in more ear drops because I produce way more wax than normal for some stupid reason. At this point I just want to get my ears removed because they hurt and burn so much. I’ve been dealing with this practically my whole life and EVERY ear doctor I’ve gone to tells me nothing is wrong when clearly something IS wrong.

  • I used the Otex rubber bulb and it worked a treat. I’ve suffered with continuous ear blockage and I might see an ent to see what’s really causing it but this method is great when you have a small amount of wax- lots of wax might require medical intervention but ear syringing is a quick and even relaxing process. Don’t worry, you can hear again!🫶🏾

  • My right here has suddenly become deaf( not fully) but muffled with crackling noises when listening to sound even this article. Mri scan shows nothing. And no infection. Do you know what what could be causing this. It driving me insane I’ve tried olive oil at home but nothing I can’t even pop them fully .. xo

  • You shouldnt leave water in your ear for 3 minutes, especially if its a low quality tapwater (read the comments about ear infection after doing this) Where i live my doctors use a large syringe and actually squirt out the dirt and debry, it works fantastic. I dont think that what is shown here is good advice at all and doesnt show the propper intended use of the bulb syringe. If the syringe was inteded to only squirt 3 droplets, it wouldnt nearly have been as big.

  • Watched a few articles after nurse practitioner mentioned the wax build-up and knew I’d been using a Q-tip to clean my ears which she said was only compacting the wax. Back to articles… There is no obvious view of any wax coming out of ears and I am more than a little suspicious that these “kits” might soften the ear-wax, but getting ALL out ? Doubt it. Time to visit an audiologist to have it professionally removed to get my hearing back.

  • My doctor won’t do anything about it. When I was younger my old doctor said I suffered from glue ear and I had a gromit put in the left one. According to my doctor, the reason I can’t hear is cus of wax and both ears are the same however I can hear perfectly fine out of my left ear and no matter how many times I try to tell him that my right ear is really muffled he just says it’s the wax😢

  • How is everyone’s ear wax coming out smoothly?? I got my mom to squirt 5-6 drops of this product I bought and I let it marinate for 15mins and I didn’t know you were to suppose to let the water in your ear for 1 min. I just thought I had to flush it out. Sadly this didn’t work for me. Maybe I did it wrong idk. Can I keep squirting the ear wax product in my ear more than once? Throughout the day?

  • Is there some way to ensure that all the water is out of the ear? I’ve had a similar procedure done by a doctor and my ear hurt for weeks after that. I used to have this problem as a kid when submerging my head under water in the tub an water would get in my ear. I’d get a painful bump in my ear. Ever since that doctor visit, I don’t put liquid in my ear. Now, my ear is blocked again and seemed to have happened after I used this ear wax removal tool that looks like a silicone drill on a handle. It’s been blocked since last month. It’s so annoying. It just won’t go away and I can’t get whatever it is out.

  • I feel sharp pain in both of my ears and i can crack the muscles inside my ears by moving my jaw i used to use q-tip and get it inside my ears and few times a air came out of my ears and my hearing is getting worst also i can hear bones friction inside my ears I have visit two doctors before and they said there’s nothing wrong with my ears so i don’t know what is the problem what should i do ?

  • I think there are a lot of cottons that was left inside my ear, Iwas using a match stick and cotton to clean my ears, and i can feel that there are still cottons left, im afraid that yhe cotton already stick to my ear drums and if i use this suction i may get the cotton but maybe the cotton alreadu stick to eardrum and it may damage my eardrum that will result to great affect with my hearing, what to do if the case is like this, hope someone can help me

  • I’ve had blocked ears over a month now. It started in my right and then my left. The left side wasn’t that bad, I went to hospital and I was given some ear drops because my right ear got infected. I’ve tried ear drops for four days, it didn’t work and now olive oil, still no help. I have the same ear problem every year. Any help as my doctors done do ears anymore and my local hospital stopped as well 😢

  • Local GP will no longer see me for this and has told me that it is no longer done on the NHS, you have to go private & that costs £55 for one ear or £70 for two ears. It use to take the practice nurse only a few minutes to do, now having to pay to have it done after paying National Insurance for over 40 years..

  • Hi, I used a cotton bud to remove the wax(I always do this), but today I guess the wax went deep and my ear blocked. I can hear slightly, have fullness feeling, also these noices. Am really tensed as it’s the first time. I did get hydrogen peroxide but not the syringe. I put the drops then I just put some drops of water inside to remove..but it didn’t work I guess as my ear still feels the same. Shall I consult a doctor for wax removal?

  • A nurse did this to my ear, but she didn’t squeeze gently, she squeezed as hard as she could, it was really painful. This was probably a year ago, since then whenever i put a finger inside my air, i can hear the sound that comes whenever your ear is clogged by water, except, there is no water in there. Also i sometimes feel a strange sensation of pulsing in that ear. Did she have no clue what she was doing, and broke something in my ear? I can still hear sounds like normal by the way, so i don’t think it has lowered my hearing

  • It’s nearly 3 previous years ago that happened on Sunday 2nd 🥈 January 2022. When I place the water 🚿 💦 💧 into the ear 👂 canal, it must be warm water 💦 🚿 💧 and not too boiling 🥵 hot 🥵 is because it can 👌 seriously 😦 😟 😧 burn 🔥 the ears 👂 👂 that it could serve me right and I’m not joking 🙃. The likely this happens to me is when I feel like 👍 ❤️ it. 👍

  • Whhhhhhhhhy are there so many contradictions? One doctor tells me NOT to put ANYTHING into the canal. The next doctor tells me to put a syringe bulb into the canal. One doctor tells me to use hydrogen peroxide, the next doctor tells me not to. One doctor tells me to use olive oil, the next doctor tells me it doesn’t do anything. One doctor tells me to use many drops, next doctor tells me to use 3 to 4 drops. One doctor tells me to use something and the next doctor says it’ll cause itching and dryness. Can never get a straight answer. It’s it that much harder to trust any of these doctors. Where’s the one cure all? I’m not trying to go to a doctor with no money and no insurance. I’m not trying to injure my ear. And I’m not trying to put drops in my ears two or three times a day for 52 weeks. I’m looking for the one and done solution that doesn’t involve going to a doctor, a physician, an ENT, or the ER.

  • why not squeeze it too hard? why no hot water? my manual didnt say to leave the water in. this method isnt effective. ill have to try tilting my ear towards the sink and using tonnes of pressure. because im too cheap to buy some fucking 30 buck wax melting shit and have it in my ear for a long 10 min

  • Jesus Christ saved my life he can save yours to. No body is perfect except Jesus Christ. So he was the perfect sacrifice for the world and he became that sacrifice. So that we can be perfect in God’s eyes all we need to do is. Repent from our sinful wicked ways and surrender our life’s to him. Jesus Christ. Repent meaning acknowledge and forsake your sins. Know you have sinned and know you are not good in God’s eyes. Forsake meaning as in try your absolute best to not sin. We have to be clean and filled with the Holy Spirit. Jesus Christ said we must be born again to enter The Kingdom of Heaven. God bless you all. I love you all may you all find Jesus Christ as your Lord Savior . God bless brothas and sisters ❤❤! Thank God ❤️

  • He must get a cut of sales of these things. A bulb like this is inadequate for this – doctors don’t use wimpy bulbs they use an irrigation device like a Bionix OtoClear – that’s what I use at home. Far more powerful and effective – it includes a temperature indicator to let you know if the water is in a safe range.

  • Hi im 25 and ive had this specific issue twice now, its pretty straightforward to solve but I’m wondering what habits a professional would recommend for me to reduce the risk of this happening? I dont use earphones or cotton buds. I think the regular activity to prevent is to chew hard foods since that encourages the wax to he pushed out. I welcome any advice

  • Studies I’ve read seem to suggest olive oil doesn’t do anything more than add a bit of lubrication. Water is probably equally if not more effective and it might be OK to just add a few drops of water around 30 minutes before irrigation. I wonder if distilled water might be a good alternative to boiling water, esp. as boiled water might be slightly alkaline which is not good for the ear.

  • Thanks for the article, I’m 31 and have always had ears blocking up specifically my right one it’s just happened this morning after trying to clean out I must of pushed some wax further in the canal, over the last 10-15 years I’ve had to have my ear syringed maybe 3 times at the doctors but it always worries me with the little water jet they use if it’s going to perforate my drum, would you say this method is less abrasive and less likely to cause an issue as I may try and do this at home and not go to the doctors this time thanks

  • So I was recommended by my doctor to not use cotton buds to clean my ears as it makes it worse by pushing the wax further inside. I then normally get a syringe session done at the hospital which clears everything for a while. I’m very curious and want to do it on my own as it seems quite easy. What do you recommend?

  • I just finished to remove all earwax in my ears with ear bulb syringe, with some bicarbonate in water, using tools clean special ear and with help of an ear removal camera. They were useful I feel my ear so good empty . The only thing now, all earwax stocked in my ears were to much in contact so hard on my skin inside ( sry my English) but now after removing, it’s red, I guess its reaction of skin freedom 😅. But what serum to use to calm down my ears skin insides?

  • There is a lot of contradictory information about what to put in your ear before irrigation. In some articles, it suggests that ear wax is not softened by olive oil, and suggests using sodium hydrogen carbonate solution instead. My experience is that NaHCO3 solution does soften the wax, but doesn’t necessarily make it easy to flush out, and I wonder if the olive oil may loosen the wax without softening it, making it easier to remove. In the US, they tend to suggest using hydrogen peroxide solution – I don’t really like the idea of that!
