Carnations have a subtle balmy and spicy fragrance, lacking in cloves. L’Origan by François Coty was the first carnation-based perfume, featuring a spicy carnation floral base (clove, cinnamon, nutmeg) blended with oriental or amber notes and floral notes. Mona di Orio’s Carnation smells like the blush or smell from a young woman’s skin, while Coup de Fouet from Caron has a spicy clove scent.
Carnation scents can add a unique touch to personal perfume creations, but they can be disappointing if not used properly or sensitive to certain scents. Opium by Yves Saint Laurent is an Oriental Spicy fragrance for women, while Garofano (Carnation) by Santa Maria Novella is a Citrus Aromatic fragrance for women and men. Lady Disdain is my favorite carnation perfume, and Arcana – Trust is great mixed with other perfumes.
Some modern carnation perfumes featuring the fiery flower include En Voyage Fiore di Bellagio, DSH Perfumes Oeillets Rouge, and Serge Lutens. Miller Harris Fleur Oriental, released in 2000, uses carnation as the heart note for the oriental scent, cushioning it in a bed of other notes.
Mona di Orio’s Carnation EDP embodies the huskiness/peppery aspect of carnations over the signature MdO base. However, there are not many carnation fragrances on the market, making it difficult to find a suitable blend for some individuals.

Why don’t people like carnation flowers?
The carnation, a ruffly flower often found in grocery stores, is a controversial flower with many opposing its use in arrangements. However, there are reasons for giving carnations a second chance. They can last an average of 14 to 21 days with proper care. The human usage of carnations dates back to ancient times, with Greeks and Romans using them in sacred ceremonies and fashion. They were attributed to their gods, making them the “flower of the gods” and “Jupiter’s flower”. Their unique beauty and reverence made carnations a favorite in ancient times, a departure from the modern “cheap flower” perception. Care for cut carnations is essential for their longevity.
Why don’t carnations smell anymore?
Pollution is affecting the scent of flowers, disrupting their natural processes, disrupting insect life, and threatening food supplies, according to a study funded by the US National Science Foundation. The research, funded by the Blue-chip US National Science Foundation, found that car exhaust emissions from flowers prevent bees and other insects from pollinating them. The scientists also fear that insects’ ability to repel enemies and attract mates may be impeded.
The University of Virginia researchers found that pollution is cutting the distance travelled by the scent of flowers, making it increasingly difficult for bees and other insects to locate the flowers.

I came here specifically looking for perfumes that smell like carnation. I love that spicy scent. Honestly in my opinion, the overwhelming floral scent at funerals is chrysanthemum. Good information. My dad’s scent was English Leather and Winston cigarettes. He has been gone since 1984. Just finding your website today. I enjoyed!
Fellow carnation lover here. Love your energy. Thank you for this article and sharing memories of your dad. Had no idea old spice was a carnation scent! We all have our loved ones who wore it back in the day. Carnation isn’t a sexy flower – I think because it’s so cheap in the grocery store and dyed synthetically it doesn’t have the same appeal as a rose or something harder to find. Who knows. We love it and that’s all that matters – maybe it will be next year’s hot flower but I kind of like that it’s under the radar. Recently tried Hiram Green Vivacious I think it’s called, smelled very literally of a wet carnation. Nice for spring. Also love and wear frequently vintage red cap by dolce and gabanna- there’s a velvet version that is supposed to be carnation forward as well that is discontinued which I am going to pick up.
Hi Amy! So thrilled to see carnation getting some love! I immediately went to check out Noble Carnation, and I see it’s back! If you didn’t already know, I hope this makes your day! ❤️ I’m going to pick up a bottle on your recommendation. Full trust! ☺️ Speaking of great carnation scents, I recommend Boudoir by Vivienne Westwood if you haven’t tried it already. It’s discontinued, and prohibitively expensive now, but sometimes you can pick up a 5ml mini.
ii’m so glad you did this article, because i love carnation scents! i’m not sure why it’s unpopular, besides that people may consider it ‘old fashioned’ but i think that’s just silly. i have found many more oils with carnation than commercially produced scents, though i did try oeillet sauvage by l’artisan and really liked it a lot. lady disdain by poesie perfumes is a favorite, and BPAL does some great carnation blends. i have been trying alkemia for a few years and they have some really intriguing scents. i tried evil temptress, and sadly it didn’t really work on me, but have not tried green carnation, and now i must add it to my to-try list (along with a few others here, thanks.)
You missed out on Roger and Gallet’s Blue Carnation back in the 1970’s. It was my signature scent when I was in junior high and high school. Sadly, it was discontinued in 1976. It was so lovely, rich and smooth! The fellows loved it too! I have even been lobbying Mahsam Raza of Dua Fragrances trying to convince him to create a dupe of Blue Carnation. Thus far, to no avail. i am on a mission to make this happen, so if you are so inclined, I would suggest joining the Dua Facebook group and bombarding Mahsam Raza with requests for a Blue Carnation recreation! Cause ya’ know, it’s got to be profitable for Dua.
I love 💕 carnations too. Thanks to you and this article, I was able to track down an Oeillet Savage. I love it. I am curious about your trip to Paris a few years back. Can you do a article on it? I am sure you did perfume shopping. I would love to hear about it. I too love visiting Paris and did a solo travel article about it. But not in the article were many stops at perfumery and fragrance counters looking for the perfect scent. I did find a carnation perfume at Fragonard, but when I return to get more, it too was discontinued. So sad. Oeillet Savage is close to it and just a little spicier than the one from Fragonard but lovely. I really enjoy your articles and your fragrance knowledge. I will share one of your articles in the near future with my viewers if I have your ok. Thank you.
I don’t care what anyone says- carnations are my favorite flowers. Also love lily, but because I have a feline roommate, too paranoid to bring those inside. I think a lot of carnation dominant perfume are either extremely powder or spicy- arguably also out of style? Though I love carnations I’m mature, most perfume iterations are too cinnamon-clove for my tastes…or too warm and powdery. I don’t mind a little powder, but I need it to be cooler as opposed to very warm. The only exception in Opium. Parfum and Secret de Parfum. (I don’t care for the current formulation edt and edp.) TBH, those are really incense frags. I think the closest I’ve come to my ideal is Santa Maria Novella’s Garofano. It’s crisp, green, cool and refreshing. That Green Carnation seems like something I need to try!
I just ordered noble carnation and wanted to let you know it’s back up on the royal apothic website! I think it might smell similar to the lotion “potion” by lush that was discontinued long long ago that I have never forgotten. Potion was a carnation lotion with rose and a spicy scent as well, I think it might have been black pepper or something. It was just such a magical lotion and had a lot of memories with it for me. I know noble carnation will not smell exactly like it, but it sounds like a fantastic perfume and I just can’t wait to get it now!
Hi Amy…and thanks for this article. I dig your vibe. 🙂 I recently really got into fragrance collecting and one of my first scent memories is, you guessed it, carnation. I LOVE that scent and have always wondered why there isn’t more if that note in today’s fragrances. I did not realize that it was more popular back in the day. Still, I have been on a quest to find a great men’s carnation fragrance. Aside from Old Spice – would you say that any of your other choices could be unisex? In the depths of my imagination – I can envision an amazing men’s carnation forward (and modern) fragrance. Someone really does need to bring it back (maybe Roja or Zaharoff?) Thanks again – be well.
