Is It Possible To Grow Sunflowers In June?

The best month to plant sunflowers depends on your USDA garden zone, first expected fall frost, and the sunflower’s days to maturity. In the northern U.S., sunflowers can be planted in spring as early as April and as late as mid-June, while in the southern U.S., they can be successfully planted in July. The optimal time for planting sunflowers is between April and June, as the soil temperature is warm enough for the seeds to germinate quickly.

There are three options for planting sunflowers: early spring, where seeds should be sown indoors under grow lights; mid spring, where seeds should be sown outdoors directly into the garden; and winter, when seeds should be sown in plastic milk. In Zone 9, the final frost date is around February 28th, suggesting planting from this date onwards.

Sunflowers are best suited to be planted outside once the risk of frost has passed, making June a prime time. Unlike seeds sown earlier in the year, which often need some time indoors, June sunflowers can be planted straight out into the garden. However, planting sunflowers late in the season may not be without risk. Seeds sown beyond midsummer may struggle to establish themselves, and flowering can continue into October.

In regions with a long growing season (200 or more frost-free days), sunflowers can be planted as late as July or even early August. Early June is arguably the best time for sowing sunflower seeds directly into the soil, and it is safe to safely transplant baby sunflowers.

How long does it take for sunflower seeds to germinate?

The germination of sunflower seeds occurs within a period of seven to ten days, with the rate of germination being dependent upon the temperature and moisture content of the soil. In the majority of cases, the majority of sprouts emerge within this timeframe.

What is the latest you can plant sunflowers?

To ensure long-lasting coverage and more bees, plant new sunflower seeds every week in June. July is the last month to sow new seeds, as most sunflower cultivars mature in around three months. Sunflowers grow large, tall, and cheerful flower heads that brighten and animate your yard. They are beautiful, easy to cultivate, and attract beneficial pollinators to your yard. To direct sow sunflower seeds, plant them directly in your outdoor garden when the risk of frost has passed in late spring. Keep the variety in mind when determining spacing, with regularly-sized sunflowers growing anywhere from 8 to 12 inches apart, while jumbo-sized sunflowers need 16 to 20 inches of space to thrive.

Should I soak sunflower seeds before planting?

Soaking seeds before planting is a common method to improve germination, as seeds have a hard outer layer to protect themselves from insects and diseases. Soaking them in water softens the hard seed coat, exposing the embryo to moisture and promoting growth. Sunflower seeds don’t need to be soaked, but soaking them for 12 to 24 hours can hasten germination and increase the number of sprouts. To grow sunflowers outdoors, cover the planting area with finished compost or aged manure, then work it into the ground, loosening the top 12-18 inches of soil. This loose soil allows the sunflower’s long taproot to grow easily and improves water infiltration.

How long do sunflowers last when growing?

Annual sunflowers can be cultivated in a variety of plant hardiness zones, provided that they are situated in an area with full sunlight. They typically remain in bloom for a period of three to four weeks.

What to plant in July in the Netherlands?

In July, warm weather allows for more vegetable harvests, making it a good time to sow various vegetable seeds such as rocket, lettuce, purslane, green loaf, cress, chard, Chinese cabbage, beets, radishes, carrots, chives, and carrot parsley. Beans like butter beans, bacon beans, runner beans, green beans, string beans, sproats, and microgreens can be grown year-round.

In August, grow rocket seeds, spinach seeds, winter purslane seeds, ramenas seeds, and watercress. September, with shorter days and high heat, is mostly harvesting but still allows for seed sowing, including lettuce, spinach, rocket, winter purslane, sproats, and microgreens.

How long will sunflower seeds last for planting?

Vegetable and flower seeds can be stored for up to a year without significant germination decrease. Storage can extend to 10 or more years under proper conditions, with seed moisture and temperature being key factors. Drier seeds are more durable. Garden success relies on quality seeds, so it’s essential to plant fresh seeds from reputable companies. In Colorado, all seeds can be stored on a shelf at room temperature for at least one year without significant germination loss. If enough seeds are available for several years, additional steps are needed to ensure viability.

When to plant sunflowers in the Netherlands?

Sunflowers require soil with a high nutrient content and a location that receives a substantial amount of sunlight. Helianthus seeds should be sown indoors from March to April or outdoors from April to early June. The application of additional fertilizer has been observed to enhance vegetative growth and the development of large flowers. The Helianthus giganteus, or Giant Sunflower, attains a height of approximately 250 cm and produces flowers of a yellow hue. Following the flowering period, the seeds are suitable for use as winter bird food.

What month do sunflowers grow best?

Sunflower seeds should be planted between April and May in 10cm pots of peat-free, multi-purpose compost. Cover the pots with a plastic bag and place them in a warm spot for optimal germination. Once the seedlings emerge, harden them off gradually for two to three weeks before planting them outdoors. If your garden has a lot of slugs and snails, consider potting them into larger pots of fresh compost and hardening them before planting them.

This will make the plants more resilient to slugs and snails. Plant seedlings when the soil has warmed considerably and the frost risk is gone. Monty Don’s giant sunflower trial is a great example of how to sow sunflower seeds.

How long does it take to fully grow a sunflower from seed?

Sunflowers bloom from summer to autumn, taking 11-18 weeks to flower from seed. They are easy to grow from seed and ideal for children. They can reach heights of up to 3m, bear long-lasting flowers, and look fantastic in gardens and allotments. Sunflowers are related to Jerusalem artichokes, Helianthus tuberosus, which can bear beautiful, sunflower-like blooms if planted under hot conditions and enough sunshine. Sowing sunflower seed every couple of weeks ensures a constant supply of cheerful blooms throughout summer.

What is the lifespan of sunflowers?

The Kansas state flower, also known as the common sunflower, is a native North American crop that has been domesticated for food production over 3000 years ago. Its name comes from its oversized flowerhead, which looks like the sun. Introduced to Europe in the 16th century, the sunflower became a popular ingredient in cooking and is now used in cattle feed, paper production, and sunflower oil. Young sunflowers display heliotropism, or sun tracking, and change orientation during the day to follow the sun’s course.

When mature, they stop exhibiting phototropism and remain in place. The sunflower’s meaning is often considered “adoration”. In 1903, it became the official state flower of Kansas, symbolizing the state’s frontier days, winding trails, and pathless prairies.

Care and handling of the sunflower include pruning at an angle, mixing floral food and room temperature water, removing foliage, re-cutting stems, changing water, and adding flower food on day 3 or when the water turns yellow and cloudy. The flowers should be kept away from direct sunlight, heat, and drafts, and kept at a cooler temperature. Exhausted flower heads and leaves can be removed to keep the bouquet looking fresh longer. The average vase life of sunflowers is 1 to 2 weeks.

  • I grew a variety called ‘smiley’ and they’re amazing!! My third year growing them. They only grow about 12″ tall and they get about 3-4 flower heads in a compact hardy plant. They’re like a full vase of sunflowers in the garden lol i like the taller ones as well but Smileys are amazing to fit in here and there

  • 2 years ago we had SO many sunflowers, then the next year I had alot of ground squirrels who ate most of the sprouts and we didnt have many grow at all! those nice wire cages wouldnt keep those little buggers out. this year, only 2 squirrels so far this year and I had thrown out the seeds from bird seed and theres tons of sprouts. The squirrels and chipmunks actually cut the heads off some of the flowers! gardening is a trial but I keep trying! (northern NM in the mountains)

  • My sunflowers on the side of my house self seeded from last years flowers. They are beautiful brown/yellow combination with multiple flower heads. . I finally ordered me a greenstalk tower for my birthday present. It’s assembled and waiting for my strawberry plants. I’m having trouble with the top watering container getting clogged with soil, it’s taller than me so my husband is the one who discovered the problem. That’s very annoying considering that there is very little soil in the container. Have you ever had that problem? I guess I’ll have to take it off and clean it out and be careful not to get soil in it. Great article. Thanks for sharing.

  • I just put 20 sunflowers into the ground from a little mini green house I had in my kitchen. They are pretty flemsy about 4 to 5 inches right now. I set up 6 ft posts in a row and ran twine across the whole row. Were getting alot of ran for last 3 days and the next 5 days once weather gets better im prob gonna tie them off.

  • A wire ‘something; over where Sunflower seeds are planted – excellent advice! I have some wire baskets from the $ Store I’ll use this week. This is my first year for planting Sunflower seeds, so this article is perfectly timed for me – Thanks! Question – how long are their roots? I have to plant everything here in containers.

  • Hi Gary, is there any chance you can reply with a sunflower seedling? I have many volunteer seedlings all over the place and I’m not sure if they are sunflowers or not. The squirrels took my seed heard everywhere. Thank you so much, I love all your articles, as they are straight and to the point. I hope you get more subscribers soon and get to your goal!

  • I had started a bunch of sunflowers inside (zone 4) & transplanted outside & the rabbits ate the leaves off of ½ of them & just left the stems behind! I have since bought small cheap metal garbage baskets from the dollar store & used them as cloches, covering over the seedlings. I use them in my other gardens as well. So far so good!!

  • Plus the bees and later on the birds love them. I had a massive 12′ sunflower in one of my raised beds last year that I had planted. This spring it must have produced about 20+ offspring. I just dug up the ones I wanted and transplanted them to my flower beds, and pulled the ones I didn’t. There is one left that is really big that I think I will just leave to keep the process going. Sunflowers are also fun because there are so many colors and varieties. Thanks for the article!

  • The birds plant a lot of seeds for me by dropping them in various areas of my garden. However, when I plant mammoth seeds, something is digging them up. I have to put copper rings around the seedlings to protect the ones that do emerge. Out of half a dozen I planted a month ago, only one made it… but the ones dropped by the birds are fine. Go figure. About 4 years ago, I planted a row of the multiflower type along a back fence. They have tiny seeds the birds eat, and what drops to the ground sprouts in early spring in the bark mulch. I leave them to get a few inches so the birds can eat the sprouts, check for slug activity, and then I pull what I don’t want for composting.

  • Gary, we tried to plant some mammoth this spring and they didn’t germinate. But since that I’ve been reading they prohibit other growth and fruit production of other plants due to a chemical they release. Any truth to this? Are there specific plants they should not be planted near? So we were sort of relieved our Mammoths didn’t germinate but we would like some out there.
